All Whites got destroyed down the flanks 2 goals down the wing ball low across 6 yard box goal.Playing 3 at the back with the left back out of position a catrastophy waiting to happen,and it did,more respectable 2nd half.

At least the injury crisis means we won't be playing Boxall on the wing. I guess the back 3 for Aus will be Siggy, Boxall and Boyens. Missing Reid is a bummer. I feel a bit sick about it but I'm quite glad Eilliot and Vicelich are out. I really think the younger players need to start being given a shot now and Ricki just keeps playing them.

Imo the use of the 3-4-3 at international level is past its sell by date unless you have a team full of world class players. This game showed up woefully how fragile the all whites midfield is and how exceptionaly bad thedefence can be...and to be fair in the first half they were ripped to shreds. Three up front?  great idea if thy are any good unfortunately the forwards showed how rusty they were and as a preference I would much rather 4-4-2  or even 4-5-1 all have their downsides admittedly but at least the defence gets some cover

Over everything else it showed how lacking in depth we are. When we have as many players injured as we currently do its always going to be doubtful against countries like Mexico, and its not going to be any easier against Oz.

I think for the next window (if we even play in it at all) we really need to try match ourselves up against someone we're actually going to have a chance to get a result against with a depleted squad - much like China. Even if it means Madagascar, Cyprus, Guatemala... anyone. We need wins.

Sucks about Reid... missing Elliot and Vicilich isn't exactly a bad thing. However what has Brown possibly done to retain a starting spot? I'm not even sure he was playing. I think one of our main problems even in the 2nd half was with our passing especially Elliot majority of the time he would pass it along the deck it was way behind the intended player so any chance of a break was gone. And his first touch was poor. But that goes for a lot of the other players aswell. On Mulligan... I think he did an all right job. Personally I didn't think his crosses were that great, 1 - 2 of them were quite classy. But other than that he seemed to just be hoofing it into the general area with no real purpose. Better than any of the other crosses though, mainly because there was none.

Wee Mac and Siggy have to start v Aus (even w/o the injuries to Vic & Elli)

worth starting Kosta too imo

hope we can find a replacement for when the Admiral retires

Don't despair. It is ONLY a freindly. Also look at the bright side and we will do well against Socceroos. If we don't, it will be because the usual strong players, 5 of them, aren't there and we need to blood new players. Playing players out of position is meant to develop charcater. Again, if we don't win against Socceroos, remember it is JUST another friendly. Ricki has a strategy.

Only saw the first 60 mins. Probably the worst defending I've seen from the AWs in a long while.
Hard to get into the game as my Spanish is restricted to 'hola' The pitch looked like concrete. Am sure thing will be better on Sunday. Easy to bag, but I said years ago that Tim was not good enough, and on todays performance I was correct.

If he's trying new combinations, he could try Fitzgerald in centre midfield. He moves up and down the field well and never lost the ball. At times in the first half, he seemed to be the only all white in one half of the field.

worked like a dream?...scored very few goals....didnt concede due to a lot of luck also and some good goalkeeping. Midfield is weak. if they continue with the 3-4-3 maybe they should talk to previous Wimbldon teams about the long ball game and how it works

Playing 3 at the back when your back 3 is Smith, Reid & Nelsen (most importantly) and wingbacks are Lochy & Leo (who were given quite a bit of time to adjust to those roles), is quite a different matter to playing 3 at the back with the current lineup. I'm in favour of adjusting your formation to the squad you have available, not the other way around.

Herbert should have changed his formation to suit the players rather than the other way round. I know its a bad thing to say sometimes especially after one or two bad results but Herbert needs a shake-up, he needs someone to question his decisions.

And you are the coach of what team?
Herbert is trying to best utilise the players he has at his disposal, its not just the two wide men he has to accomodate! There were a lot of players struggling and Im not just talking about the footing!

I'm the coach of no team but I can still bring this up in a discussion. All season, being a Munich fan, I had to watch Luis Van Gaal play players out of position till he got sacked. The most glaring example was Tymoshuck who had played extremely well as a defensive midfielder but van Gaal played him in defence. Van Gaal got the sack, Tymoshuck got his midfield role back and Bayern successfully qualified for one of the three bundesliga spots available. It was that simple.

Playing a big slow centre-back in the wing role because you don't want to change formations for one 'friendly' game is and was poor planning. Especially against a team that attack down the wings extremely quickly. I said that before the game and so did dozens of other people. I'm not the only one in this forum that thinks that was a bad decision.

BTW I'am aware players were struggling and it was not convincing performance by most of our players. Its hard though to expect them to perform well when they are playing out of position. Its a shame because Ftizgerald and Boxall were stand-outs for me against China.Nommag2011-06-03 10:42:04

So many short memories on here, Back when we played 4-4-2 or 4-5-1, we got humped like the Mexico game all the time. 3-4-4 has alot of short comings, but minus Thursday, we have been competing with some very good teams over the past year or 2. This has been the most successful formation in NZ football history.

Lessons learnt in regards to playing guys out of position. Fitzgerald looked ok on the ball but he's a right sided player. We need a right back/wing back (RH did say that 3-4-3 was to suit our players and coz of no decent RB) Its a good chance to try and find one for the future.


Boxall is not a wingback. In the longterm the back 3 (if we continue with it) will probably be Reid-Boxall-Smith. I feel sorry for him as he did his best but looked a bit lost going forward etc. Cant help but think it would've been better to start him on the bench as opposed to playing out of position.


Mully impressed me, he did his best to get the ball into the box - Hopefully he can back it up vs Aus and pick up a contract somewhere in the world.

Kosta & Wood both liked running at their backs, whether the timing of that decision was right or not is another issue.

The thing that f**ked me off the most was our boys knocking the ball around halfway trying to be smart and keep the ball but stuffing it up with a bad pass or first touch, losing it and putting us back under pressure.


I'm glad the younger players are getting a chance, we need to develop them so that come 2014 we're good to go
