Basically a home game for Mexico (and Elliott). They'll get a big crowd in LA. Good fixture. I hope we have all available.

My mate over there will possibly go, but only to cheer against Mexico

Excellent fixture for the AWs. Will be a very good test.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong but didn't NZ beat Mexico 4-0 in a friendly in the run up to the '82 campaign?

in Riki's debut I believe.

I heard they were trying to secure more friendly warm ups like 5 or 6 in total. Does anyone think thats enough?

I heard 6-8. Which would be perfect.

Allegedly

6-8 international games is amazing and unusual for any All Whites fan

Well i hope they play 8. AWs have done well playing 2 games against bahrain. but they need these games to string a confidence, combos, selection etc.. oh and they can rehearse lifting the world cup after then win the final

Gourdie said on the news that it is during a 2 day FIFA friendly window.  but there is a good chance to get the UK based players in because its a direct flight from london

Pity Sven Goran Erikkson just got chopped as Mexico manager.
Got them to the World Cup but only won at home.

good friendly. Pretty stoked with it really. All Whites vs Marquez, Vela, Dos Santos etc. Will be good. What time NZ would it likely be?

So all the illegal immigrants will obviously support Mexico, what about white Americans?  Can NZ hope to get support out of them?  We've had good players play there but your average fan wouldn't know that, they'd more likely know of good Mexicans who played in the MLS.

Another 4-0 win I'm tipping.

You realise there are legal hispanic immigrants too.

In fact almost half of LA's population is either hispanic or latino.

Mexico would be a good test for us. They are a very strong side and this would be almost a home game for them. We would need all our best players for this one.

The call for lots of warm up games is a good one. We need to build some real depth in the squad. At the moment the first eleven...the guys used against Bahrain are excellent. But if we are going to play 6 to 8 warm up games then we are really struggling for depth in a few positions.

We need to develop someone to play RB....and the midfield depth is woeful. Elliot will be 36/37 by the time the WC comes around. We can't expect him to play a big part anymore. That leaves McClinchey and Brown with the amateur Barron as backup. If we get injuries/suspensions amoungst these guys then the barrel is fairly empty.

A few of our boys have played MLS, though only Elliot and Oughton do currently. Nelsen, Lochhead, Boyens etc.

Boyens is still with New York isnt he?? Was playing regularly second half of the season for them.

Wasn't the World Cup final in 1994 held at the Rose Bowl?

It's pretty old and decrepit now...

Yeah it was played there. I think it was Italy v Brazil?

Yep, that's the one. Baggio's infamous penalty miss in the shootout.

I think you'll find the rose bowl has a lot of football history (and one of only two grounds to host both men's and women's world cup finals in fact according to wiki). Elliott must have played there 50 odd times as well, probably more than the rest of the AW and Mexican squads combined.

Los Angeles Galaxy

The Rose Bowl stadium was the home ground for the Los Angeles Galaxy of Major League Soccer from the team's inception in 1996 until it moved into the soccer-specific Home Depot Center in 2003; the venue additionally hosted the 1998 MLS Cup.

FIFA World Cups
The Rose Bowl is one of two stadia to have hosted the FIFA World Cup finals for both men and women. The Rose Bowl hosted the men's final in the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the women's final in the 1999 FIFA Women's World Cup. The only other stadium with this honor is the Rsunda Stadium near Stockholm of Sweden, which hosted the men's final in 1958 and the women's final in 1995. Both Rose Bowl finals were scoreless after extra time and decided on penalty shootouts; Brazil defeating Italy in the 1994 men's final, and the United States defeating China in the 1999 women's tournament.[21][22]

The 1999 women's final was the most-attended women's sports event in history, with an official attendance of 90,185.[citation needed]

On March 3, 2010 an international friendly leading up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup will be played between New Zealand and Mexico.

I haven't been keeping up with the news, but was just reading before that Scotland were planning to come to Australia and New Zealand but unfortunately the new manager Burley has said 'na' to that idea.

Haha. No, at a second look, it seems they've let Levein have more than a few days at the job.

Here's what he said regarding coming to Aussie / New Zealand:

"I had a long chat with Gordon (Smith] early on," said Levein. "While the Czech Republic game is on the agenda, there was a tour planned to Australia and New Zealand on the 25 May, which would include two games and be between ten and 14 days long. I have knocked that on the head.

"I just think that if we have an important qualifying campaign coming up next season do I want to be flying players, who have got families and who have worked their backsides off all season, out to Australia for ten days? That eats into their holiday time."

A shame. That would have drawn a good crowd.

I see that China are playing North Korea in a friendly tonite. Dont know why NZ turned an all expences paid trip over there. China may not be suited to our style of play but does AWs even have one? Meaning they havent got combinations right. Trying out potential players with experienced ones etc.. The more games the better and it seems that these countries (North Korea) are all ready on the ball about preparing for WC 2010

Because there are only a few fifa windows available to play games, so they want to keep them open for south America and euro countries.

we could have sent a team of possibles to China with BT, and the first team off to play a warmup against more adequate opposition...

I'm sure China would be happy with that.  Here NZ, we will pay for everything but its sweet if you wanna send some 2nd rate players.

I think its a long shot. But worth a try..

We are playing Mexico in the March international slot. We should get a few of our UK players for that. Maybe we should have seen if China were prepared to play us later in March. Our A-League guys would have made up nearly all the team. They would welcome a chance of a proper match as the A-league would be well finished.
Tough to turn down an all expenses paid trip plus Ricki could have tried out a few fringe guys to see if they were up to international standard. Maybe he could have tried out someone at RB.
At that stage of the buildup any decent match would be good....who cares if China play a different style to who we are meetin at the WC....a full international is always worth it.

Buckley has already said no to this. Some journo has picked up on some comments from Ricki and made it into an article. More of a casual chat than anything formal.

Play the Oz-NZ game AFTER the World Cup. Much better for the players to let out their aggro then, and nothing is on the line (i.e. World Cup spots) at that time.

September or October 2010, in a FIFA break (which there will be then) is ideal for these games to go ahead.
