the ridiculous thing about that possible squad is that it accompanied an article that said Craig Henderson would likely be called up (then they left him out!)

Mulligan played how many games for the Nix and people on here have written him off.

He's still young and played at a much higher level than half the squad picked. Herbert doesn't rate him, but doesn't means he's right... after all he signed George, both Chinese guys (G** and ??)etc etc.

Mulligan is complete pants. The sooner he disappears from the NZ football scene, the better.

I gather it is, I have read that rights to televise might not be available for the Eurpoean warm-up games but the Mexico one will be on sky.  Scouted around for the story but couldn't find it.

Not looking good for the home game pre WC. Seems like nobody loves us.....or nobody wants to travel the huge distances to play here. Not sure the Honduras game is definitely off but the NZHerald says it looks like no game.

TBH i can't see why there is this fixation with playing a team with a similar style to who we will meet in the WC. We will get enough practice against Mexico, Serbia and Slovenia...plus the game in Sth Africa pre cup.

Surely its better to at least play someone. The A-League finishes soon....the players would benifit from a hitout. Why not see if China wants to come out and play....or Indonesia or another Asian team.

A home game would serve a number of goals. First give the team a game before heading off to Europe. Second: a home game would be great for the home fans...keep the WC flag waving, a chance for us to get in behind the team. Third: the momentum domestically is behind the AW's. Another game even against a team like China would drag in a big crowd at the ROF. Surely NZ football would not turn down the opportunity for a chance of another big lump of cash from gate sales.

Yeah f**k all this 'playing like someone else' bullsh*t. its fine if you can actually get someone but i would be disappointed if we had to settle for nothing. Just play someone, anyone... outside Oceania though...

Should've taken China when we had the chance. They gave us enough chances by the sounds of it.

They wanted us to play over there.

So they did, at their expense if I recall. Surely at this stage playing an Oceania XI would be an option, better to give the boys something rather than nothing. Or even an NZFC XI.

A non-Kiwi Nix XI would work better.

You know we belong together...

I like that! But look, like I said elsewhere, if they really MUST play the game...then play it, but NOT as the official send off at the MCG. This game would be OK at the new 30,000 seat stadium, but not the MCG.

Play it in Perth, NZ, anywhere, but not the G.

People over here from interstate are already cancelling their trip to Melbourne for the game. (and some people over here are speculating that the game is to do with World Cup votes).

Like I said, if the game was hosted in NZ, well so be it, but it's not a MCG worthy clash.

For $50-60 (say), who has NZ got to entice me, Bertos, Smeltz? I see Smeltz and Bertos every week in the A-League. Good players I'm not arguing with that, but f..k me if I'm going to hand over hard earned money to see them in what amounts to nothing more than a practice game.

You blokes may be looking to the raw hit-out as good, but looking at holistically (crowds, tourists to the game and so on) it's a farce.

The FFA will charge good dollar for this game, and watch the sh.t hit the fan then.

Apparently not.  If you were happy to hand it over to us... it would be here.  It seems clear to me that playing there was one of the conditions of having the game, as we seem to have written off the home 'farewell friendly' that we were chasing, and your kidding yourself if you think we wouldn't have wanted to play this in NZ.

And if the All Whites win, you will look as silly as Miron Bleiberg and Clive Palmer do today. Or indeed, all those fellows who were saying the Nix would finish "distant tenth".

Mike, I'm not the FFA though. If I was in the FFA, I would have played it in Perth, Adelaide or Wellington (or Auckland if they put up some dollars :) I have not objected to the game per se, I have just said it's not MCG-worthy as the official send-off game. Melbournians just won't go for it, unless ticket prices are REALLY cheap.

I acknowldege that, but in that case, its your use of 'we' that I object to.  You are projecting your own opinions and make it sound like that you putting forward Australia's position.

Check edit above, I can't speak for the other 3.8 million Melburians, but judging on previous 'blockbuster' clashes at the MCG, this one will struggle (especially if ticket prices are high). Obviously I was hoping to explain here what the Melbourne market would think of the game (given it's a pre-World Cup practice match ultimately, with nothing on the line except some grabs/comments for the media), but I might be wrong.

Was just trying to "assume" the Melbourne market's position on the matter. Wasn't meant to be derogatory, but more an assumption of the marketplace here in Melbourne.

In saying that, if this game was in Perth or Adelaide (who have been dying for a Socceroos game for a few years now), my position on the game's "attraction" would be different.

Anyone know if any NZ channels are going to screen the Mexico game? (sorry if this has been asked elsewhere)
