New Zealand Football: Rojas excited about All Whites futures
March 9, 2011
AUCKLAND Teenager Marco Rojas is relishing the chance to step on to the international stage and has no regrets about picking New Zealand over his Chilean heritage.
Rojas, 19, enjoyed a breakthrough season for the Wellington Phoenix making 16 appearances and scoring two goals and while he has been tight-lipped about his club future his international future is now clear after being named in a 30 man All Whites squad by coach Ricki Herbert.
It was a very tough decision given my background with two nationalities, admitted Rojas, but growing up in New Zealand and playing all my football here it felt more comfortable playing for New Zealand.
Its always an honour to play for your country, and there are a lot of very good players in the squad. Itll be great to meet them all, train alongside them and start my international career.
The former Waikato FC, Ngaruawahia United and Hamilton Wanderers flyer won a trial at the Wellington A-League club through a scholarship from supporters group Yellow Fever in 2009 and can now look forward to a new challenge.
Ive enjoyed every step of the journey over the last few years and I think Ive come a long way in that time. Im very happy with where things are at and hopefully things continue to progress and I can play at higher levels.
Rojas could be involved for two New Zealand teams this year as, like fellow new comer Luke Rowe from Birmingham City, he is still eligible for this years FIFA U-20 World Cup and is firmly part of New Zealand U-20 coach Chris Milicichs plans with qualifiers scheduled for April and the 24-nation finals in Colombia in July and August.
Hopefully I can be involved in the qualifiers and help the team qualify for Colombia, said Rojas.
My dream is to play at a World Cup and hopefully we can qualify and can get that chance at an age group level.
