If NZ had voted Blatter, there would have been equal noise saying how could NZF vote for corruption.

There are 2 realities - you don't get high up in FIFA unless you have been exposed to this a some point so I question if Prince Ali is any cleaner than Blatter and NZF were fudgeed which way they jumped. As someone else said, walk out with your principles intact knowing you are going to the dog box or get into bed with the villainy and show everyone your position on morality.

It's great the all knowing chiming in after that fact about what NZF shoulda coulda done but the truth is, they were fudgeed either way and those same folk would have bashed them for voting Blatter and an easier path etc. Blatter alone does not decide OFCs WC path so it's a bit ignorant to think he alone put the sword to our throat - the other confeds would never have surrendered any spot to a confederation they would have thought was less deserving than them. This was at best, 10% chance of happening.

I respect their stance and give them no stick whatsoever regardless how it hurts us and our confederation after the fact.

reality is based on performance, OFC is doing well to get a half spot

Yeah but as someone else mentioned, not all the best teams in Europe are at WCs so from that, why can't an extra half spot be found for OFC, deserved or not.....

I think Conan nailed it earlier, it would effectively be a half spot for one country.  I am all for the Geographic spread (within reason) that hapens now, as the present system does allow smaller sides a chance to make it to the big stage, but it is a fine line and you do not want to see the quality diluted too  much, nor do you really want to see a tournament featuring more teams imo

Except for the small European teams. They are the ones with the greatest reduced chance in the current set-up.

True, but guess the same could be said for any small nation in an confederation

I always think these arguments get a little silly after a while - if you're going to start talking about whether the world cup is fair or not then what about the fact that the winner gets to be crowned world champs on the basis of one summer tournament every 4 years. Basically, it's never going to be fair to everyone and it shouldn't be. I personally think the balance between quality of teams and global spread is about spot on in the current format. Go too far either way and you start to lose part of what makes the World Cup what it is - a flagship event for the global game.

Modern Day Verbs:
Natter - to waffle meaninglessly
Splatter - to make a mess of things
Flatter - to gratify with half-truths
Clatter - to be the big noise
Scatter - to vanish to avoid interrogation
Blatter - all of the above

Oh I agree is definitely spot on in the current set-up, I just feel sorry for the small European nations as their chance seems even smaller to cause an upset than the small nations elsewhere. In saying that Iceland got just as close to the World Cup this year as we did.

EDIT: Yes I still think it is 2014, where has this year gone

Slovakia is roughly the same size population-wise as NZ, and we played them at the World Cup. Bosnia and Herzegovina has a smaller pop than NZ and was at the last one. Slovenia qualified in 2002 and they only have about 2 million people. None as small as Iceland though!

I guess there's so many more small nations in Europe but I don't really think it's any harsher on them than on anyone else. They also get the benefit of regularly being able to play quality sides in competitive matches, which is something we will never have

So what do they have on Blatter that they didn't have a week ago?

I'd bet nothing, that he has resigned due to Sponsors threatening to leave.

The release yesterday showing the $10m and how the corruption actually worked was the straw that broke the camels back. It's right there in black and white and showed his right hand man in it with him. Sponsors would have called and added their pressure. That was the moment of clarity for them.

I wonder if this means the authorities are really closing in on him?  Big test for FIFA now - can they have a massive clean-up/restructure or will it just be a new set of crooks running the show?

Even though he has resigned he will still be " in the chair"  for some months. Gives him time get the shredder cranked up.

What they need is a new President who 1) is a clean-skin, i.e. completely untainted by past (double) dealings, yet 2)  who knows how things work within Fifa but who has the integrity to vote against Blatter even when his Confederation was expected to toe the line; 3) who has past executive experience of running a huge corporation; and 4) who has experience of putting on a global Fifa tournament on his own patch...

Step forward that man - Andy Martin.

According to the Guardian's sources, another OFC country voted against Blatter. They don't say who though.

I'd say it would be Fiji.

All this talk about how FIFA under Blatter support small nations it is out of proportion. It's not like they will cut any $ for these developing countries. They have over a Billion on cash savings, they could give Fiji and 49 other (I made that number up) developing countries some more cash to bring their game forward without a blip on the revenue. After all, FIFA is a non profit and they have a product to print money without doing that much.

The annual funds under the FAP as determined by FIFA’s budget currently amount to USD 250,000 per member association.

There is still lots more to come over this scandle. Those FIFA guys who are charged made the big big mistake of putting corrupt money through USA banks. Hence thats why the FBI are involved.

Once they get extradited they will all sing like canaries. They will all try and plea bargain. Because the alternative is a long long spell in some butt ramming American jail. These charges of money laundering, trafficing etc are serious serious Federal charges and involve long jail sentences.

These guys will try and save their butts both literally and figuratively... they will point the finger at others in FIFA. Lots more will be revealed about many people in FIFA. Thats probably why Blatter walked.

I would suspect the corruption charges will spill over into many other Federations not just CONCACAF and South America. I can't imagine Asia or Africa have been squeeky clean.
