Glad I got along today, we were about 15 minutes late and had missed The Ferns tactics were very efficient, a line of 4 or 5 players sitting just on side and chasing long balls from the back, lots of goalmouth action but not much craft.

Without a shadow of a doubt, Football Ferns WILL thrash other teams in the Oceania qualifying phase. Football Ferns and other womens NZ football teams will need a major catastrophy in not going to their respective FIFA World Cups.

I hate to say that the Ferns haven't earned the right to go to Germany next year, but the fact that their qualification route was so easy is an insult to all the other women playing around the world. Their qualification route should be as per the senior men, with a playoff against an Asian Confederation team. Why hasn't this been standardised across all of NZ's teams?

Football Ferns miss final after lot drawn
The Football Ferns missed out on a place in the Peace Queen Cup final after a 0-0 draw against World Number nine England in Suwon, South Korea forced a drawing of lots to break a three way tie.

Mexico aren't a terrific team from what I've heard, their win over the USA was a big shock. Canada beat them quite handily in the CONCACAF Championship: 3-0 in the pool stage and 1-0 in the final, IIRC that scoreline flattered the Mexicans but I didn't watch it myself. Still, beating the US is a massive achievement in women's soccer.
Great to see us at the biggest sporting event of 2011, hopefully we can beat the poms, I remmeber seeing there girls team at chch play a shocker against North Korea.
Seven months out, and after today's draw, I'm quietly confident of progressing from this group.
We've been all square with both Japan and England in recent times, and murdered Mexico at U-20 level. If we go into the Mexico game with a quarter-final berth at stake ... :-))

AUCKLAND � FIFA�s Women�s World Cup Welcome Tour rolled through Auckland on Friday as part of a global tour of all nations qualified for next year�s showpiece of women�s football.
After an equally whirlwind stop in Sydney on Wednesday, a delegation including FIFA�s Head of Women�s Football Competitions Tatjana Haenni, and Germany 2011 Local Organising Committee President Steffi Jones touched down in New Zealand to showcase what next year�s FIFA Women�s World Cup will be like.
The event will feature single matches from the group stage, rather than double headers, with crowds expected to rival the record numbers that attended USA 1999.
Jones, who represented Germany over 100 times, admitted she would like the home nation to do well but said the unpredictability of a FIFA World Cup is what makes them so special.
�The World Cup writes its own history and it can be surprising,� Jones said.
�Lower ranked teams can beat the top teams and I�m just excited to see who is going to be the team that wins and of course to see lots of goals and have fans experience the atmosphere and fascination that Germany can offer.�
With the FIFA Women�s World Cup trophy on display, Jones and Haenni also took part in an afternoon symposium on women�s football in New Zealand, where the gathered audience learned about the development the women�s football here and around the world and gained insights into the progress of the New Zealand and Australian women�s national teams thanks to presentations from Football Ferns head coach John Herdman and guest speaker Tom Sermanni, head coach of the Australian Matildas.
Football Ferns veteran Maia Jackman, who was presented with her 50th New Zealand was joined on stage by Jones, Herdman and Sermanni for a Q&A session.
Jackman, who is hoping to play in her second Women�s World Cup spoke of the sacrifice her and her teammates make to be a Football Fern, juggling 28 hour training schedules with the demands of study, work or motherhood. She also spoke about what having the Women�s World Cup trophy in New Zealand meant for the team.
�To see the trophy just there, brings home how close the tournament is and reinforces our desire to go to what will be a fantastic World Cup and make an real impact.
The evening session featured more special guests with German Ambassador Thomas Hermann Meister, Consulate General Erich Bachmann, NZF Chairman Frank van Hattum in attendance and New Zealand�s 1982 World Cup captain Steve Sumner named as an honourary �Super Fan� for the event.
German based defender Rebecca Smith also played a part, with a special recored video message to her teammates and New Zealand fans.

AUCKLAND - Uncapped youngsters Olivia Chance and Terri-Amber Carlson have been handed a golden opportunity to stake claims for a FIFA Women�s World Cup spot with inclusion in a 21 strong Football Ferns squad for the 2011 Cyprus Cup in early March.
Chance, from Tauranga, was among New Zealand�s standout performers at the 2010 FIFA U-17 World Cup in Trinidad and Tobago, was player of the Women�s Knockout Cup final for Claudelands Rovers and has made a bright start to Waikato-Bay of Plenty�s ASB Women�s Youth League campaign.
Wellingtonian Carlson, who will suit up for North Shore club Glenfield Rovers this season in order to train full-time with the New Zealand squad, is a graduate of the FIFA World Cup U-20 campaign.
With the FIFA Women�s World Cup looming in June, Football Ferns coach John Herdman has included Chance, 17, and Carlson, 20, in a squad heavy on midfielders and forwards has he looks for the right blend to take to Germany.
�The Football Ferns are going in to this World Cup with high hopes,� said Herdman, �but the type of team we�ve been evolving towards needs players that have that little bit extra in the middle to attacking third.�
�Terri-Amber and Olivia both displayed a mindset of wanting to beat players, wanting to get on the ball and they�ve shown some technical qualities that could actually help us unlock international defences.�
The squad also features recalls for Annalie Longo and Hannah Wall who missed October�s World Cup qualifiers through injury, while goalkeeper Jenny Bindon and 21-year-olds Abby Erceg and Ria Percival could all earn their 50th caps on tour.
New Zealand have been drawn against England, Japan and Mexico in the World Cup and Herdman sees the European defences of their Cyprus Cup Group B opposition France, Switzerland and the Netherlands as ideal tests.
�We�ve learned in the recent [goalless] draw against England that the teams we�ll come up against in the World Cup will be defensively compact and solid so we need players that can do something a little bit different. That could be current players stepping up and developing those qualities, both mentally and technically, or some new blood coming in.�
New Zealand made the top four of the 2009 Cyprus Cup and went one better last year by reaching the final where they lost 0-1 to Canada after defeating both Italy and Scotland en route.
This year though, all roads lead to Germany.
�We�ll be approaching the Cyprus Cup differently than we have in recent years. Our prime focus isn�t to win the event this year; it�s to find the right attacking chemistry to take in to a World Cup.
�For one, we�ve got to be mindful that England and Mexico will be at the Cyprus Cup and videoing our games and gathering data, so the less we give away the better.�
While Herdman and his coaching staff may keep some tactical tricks up their sleeve, the coach issued a timely warning to players, old and new alike, that they can�t afford to hold anything back.
�We�re defensively pretty solid but not creating enough opportunities, so players that have been wearing the shirt for the past couple of years need to keep stepping up or they are in danger of being overtaken by the new players coming in.
�In Cyprus we need the established players to show that they can move us towards winning a World Cup rather than just competing in one.�

While Mexico might take a psychological boost from the victory Herdman his confident his opposite number will be none the wiser about how the Ferns will play when the two meet in their final FIFA Women�s World Cup group match in Sinsheim, Germany on July 5.

AUCKLAND � The Football Ferns will play Australia and China in May as the last dress rehearsal before the New Zealand squad depart for the FIFA Women�s World Cup in June.
The Ferns play trans-Tasman rivals and fellow World Cup finalists Australia in Gosford on May 15 and then travel on to meet China in Jinan on May 20. Each match will be preceded by a behind-closed-doors training match.
A 21-strong squad will travel for the matches against the World�s 12th and 15th ranked nations and after experimenting with tactics and trialling personnel in the recent Cyprus Cup, New Zealand coach John Herdman says the four match tour will have a clear focus as they head into the sharp end of preparations for Germany 2011.
�Cyprus was experimental, this is a dress rehearsal,� Herdman said.
�It�s about building on the core of players and strategies and putting the final pieces in place, against teams who will be very similar to England and Japan.�
New Zealand face Japan, England and Mexico in Group B, while Australia �quarterfinalists in 2007 � have drawn Brazil, Norway and Equatorial Guinea in Group D.
�The game against the Matildas will have something extra on it, not just because they are gearing up for the World Cup as well, but also because any game we play against the Aussies has extra pressure to do well.�
The games will be the last on-field opportunity for players to force their way into New Zealand�s World Cup squad which will be named in late May.
