I was not discussing tactics for this game I was commenting on the generic 'style' of play NZF and in this case the Ferns are utilising. It is the old English Long Ball which has been well and truly surpassed.
If NZF are to progress and win games at World Cups and be competitive our teams and players have to be encouraged to play a more expansive, possession based style of football.
Japan have done this for a number of years now and are moving up the world order as a result. We used to bully them off the ball a few years ago but they have stuck to developing technically proficient players capable of playing under pressure.
Look at Spanish football, World Cup winners, Euro U21 winners and even their womens teams are playing the same style and as a result getting better and better.
Hoofing the ball upfield is NOT the way forward. It may cost us some results initially but at some point we have to be brave enough to try and keep the ball. Look how much better the U17 Boys looked against Uzbek when they 'played' compared to their performance against the US when they played it longer. Admittedly the opposition does make a difference but if we want to become a competitive nation we have to be brave and try and play the beautiful game. And as I said I do think we have players capable of doing that; Moorwood, Yallop, Riley, McLaughlin, Hearn, Erceg, White, Percival and some others at home..
As for the cross from Percival, imagine how many more she could have put in if she had been employed as a winger as opposed to a central midfield player asked to get wide when possible, especially in 30 degree heat..
