from this article on stuff http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/4975557/New-NZ-Football-CEO-unveils-plan-for-future

"We've got the Football Ferns playing the Matildas [on Thursday] and I can confirm that will be on television. It's only the second time our senior female team has had a friendly game screened. Progress on that front is very important."

oh well that's a bummer it's delayed by a few hours. Better than nothing I suppose.

I just realised the game on Thursday, they were refferring to, is being played behind closed doors.

Trying to talk a few people into going up for this, got a few English friends who are more than happy to don an All White's strip & support us when Oz is involved.

Understandable commercial decision made by both parties involved (FFA and NZF). The fact that a panel of Rugbly League "experts" are commenting on the match is great publicity for the match but also highlights a wee bit of hypocriticalness by them. After all, when was the last Women's Rugby League International friendly played in front of a packed house in Australia???

An early goal and a late brace bookended the Football Ferns 0-3 defeat to Asian champions Australia in Gosford on Thursday.

The home side struck in the 10th minute through Caitlin Foord and then saw off a spirited second half showing from New Zealand before sealing the match with a 20 metre screamer from Kyah Simon in the 79th minute and a third from Leena Khamis five minutes from fulltime.

We had some good spells but Aussie were the better team, theres not much doubt in that, said New Zealand coach John Herdman.

They are very good at showing you why they are Asian champions.

Hannah Wilkinson had a great chance to put New Zealand back on level terms 25 minutes into the match but put her shot over the bar on a day when the Matildas were more physical and showed more of a ruthless streak.

They were very clinical. They scored two goals we couldve dealt with better and one which was absolutely world class. Thats our challenge and we either the wrong decision or a lack of quality lets us down. Whats going to be key when we get into these games against the best sides we got into these games, score first and stay in the game.

We had a great spell in the second half and looked like we were going to get something but the opportunities went and when they did the Aussies punished us.

We had a very good chance to equalise early on and then a couple of half chances throughout the game but at times when got into some good positions we just took the wrong option. There are some things we can work on which will just make things tougher for Aussie on Sunday.

On the road to the World Cup well take some positives out of that and three or four key learnings into the next game.

New Zealand play Australia again on Sunday and their chances would be boosted by the return of WPS Rookie of the Year Ali Riley who is still in doubt after missing Thursdays match with a hamstring strain.

On a brighter note, there were personal milestones for Katie Bowen who made her senior debut and for captain Rebecca Smith who played her 50th A international.

Sundays match will be broadcast delayed on Sky Sport 3 from 8.30pm.

I'll be watching it live at 3 pm local. Hope we do well, but Oz are a good side.

We lost 2-1. Thought we were the better team but not enough power in our shots. deserved a draw but wasn't to be. They can be proud of their performance. Good to see it on tele too, looked a good size crowd too.

The ferns deserved at least a draw for sure. Though the goals they let in were a bit soft.

Watched the game on Sky. Ferns were clearly the better side for much of the match. I've never seen the Ferns play before, but its hard to believe that we have been beaten by Australia by 3+ goals in the last few times we've played them. Some of the defending by Aussie was very very average (to say the least). Just not enough juice in the kiwi shots unfortunately (12 on target out of 19 total vs the 4 on target out of 15 for Australia). djtim30002011-05-15 23:21:42

Thought we played reasonably well. Agree with Stevo - I could have sworn she was inside the goal when she was trying to get across to the first one. 2nd goal not her fault - looked like the ball went through the wall which fell apart. Definitely we can take some positives out of that game.

I suspect NZF paid for it to be one tv.

Watching the reply now. Poor keeping for the first goal.  Got herself in a poor position which meant to wasn't able to dive as she would have gone straight into the post.

Commentator is f**king annoying.

We just scored our goal.  Pretty well worked goal.  Good cut back. Their keeper probably should have done better too.

Totally agree:the standard wasn't what I thought it'd be from both teams.Despite all the statements from Herdman about playing a passing game,a heck of a lot of balls were lumped up the field,to little effect. The best NZ player was Riley, who looked to have the beating of the aussie fullback, yet ended up playing right back it seemed.Go figure...

Hi all,

Tonight's game is a training match only - no caps will be awarded.

Friday night's game, I understand, is going to be televised in China. Wonder if any of the CCTV channels which can be subscribed to on Sky will be showing it?

The squad had a six-hour wait between flights at Hong Kong airport yesterday, and I'm told they have no Facebook access in China.

Cheers,

JR

I heard from another forum that the ferns lost 3-0 to China yesterday in a shortened game? This does not sound good, any truth?
Permalink Permalink

Dunno what ranking China is these days but historically they have been a very strong team and have performed at a higher level than the men's team.

No shame in a 3-0 loss if true.
