Wow, battered Wales.

I was impressed at first but then found out Wales are ranked just ahead of PNG in the World rankings.... So maybe we should have beaten them by more than 2-0..

Almost 100,000 people saw the games, with 71,755 at Germany's 2-1 win over Canada at Berlin's Olympic Stadium.

Earlier on, there were 27,674 in Sinsheim to see France beat Nigeria 1-0 in the tournament's opening fixture.
Not a bad start and then there's....
More than 700,000 tickets have been sold for the three-week event, with about half the games expected to attract more than 20,000 fans.

That is fantastic.  Would that be more people than what martin sneddon is hoping for at RWC 2011?

Germany should just host every World Cup at every level. Great hospitality, great fans, great atmosphere, great organization and great stadiums.

Three for me, and two for them.

Japan are group favourites, ranked #4 in the world.  The tussle in this group is over who'll go through with them.

anyone else watching the game live @1am tonight? I have been starved of football in the last few months so have made the most of U17 and wimmins. See you here in a few hours hopefully

I watched France beat Nigeria last night.  From that, and the match report on the Germany - Canada game, this may be a better (more entertaining) tournament than last year's World Cup.

Fingers crossed.

Interesting game.  Not so much a contrast between attack and defence as two different styles of attack.  The 'Ferns have had their share of luck already, but they should be more dangerous as the game slows down in the heat.  I still expect Japan to get a winner.

Stats after 45:

Shots - Japan 8 New Zealand 1
Possession Japan 62 New Zealand 38

Has it been this much of a lopsided game? Not watching, just looking at box score.

we have had chances and so have they, they looking more dangerous and dominating possession but it not all one way traffic

Second half opens with the 'Ferns much more dangerous.  Japan aren't able to keep up their pressing game in the heat (almost 30 degrees) and the added time on the ball is helping NZ.

Moorwood coming on for young Bowen has added a bit more presence (and fresh legs) to the center of the park.  Japan will have to look to their (strong) bench to change the game.

edit: And just after I post this, Japan makes a substitution.

Smith makes the right decision to bring down the substitute, Iwabuchi, at the edge of the area.  But Japan take the lead with a perfect free kick.

2-1.  It will take a bit of luck for the 'Ferns to get back into the game.
