Football Ferns - OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament (Samoa)

Watching without sound. Pitch looks a bit bumpy & no doubt it's hot. Hopefully Apia Park under lights for the semi & final, team can play better football.

Ferns with all the ball, but struggling to create much against a team parking the bus. Feel that that's probaly the biggest improvement now with better coaching of these female Island teams, better defensive structure.

But already sans Fraser the Ferns look limited. No real midfield spark to create something. All pretty predictable down the flanks. It's only 5 mins, but not sure how Ava Collins got picked for this tourney.

I’m gonna get sick watching this.

Cameraman must be on a boat ffs

Pretty lacklustre, despite the scoreline. Would love to see the wide players be a bit more aggressive and take on the first defender sometimes. Collins looks a little hesitant

Hand and Page-Riley at least look a threat, but the firepower is weak. I don't think we should be relying on Wilkinson to score goals!

Yep Wilkinson needs to be phased out at most be a bench player.

Otherwise thought we've been good, Riley and Hand playing really well, Fraser a bit quiet but just scored.

Didnt she only comes on about 15 minutes ago? Even in the NT set up, it's so evident that her technical ability is miles above. If we're gonna have a player who makes it to the big time it'll be her

Not sure why you would put her out there in a game against an unstructured side when we were leading 5-0. Always going to be risk of injury. Hope it's not serious.... she was crying and clutching her face.. please not another acl :(

I wouldn't have played Fraser in that game. No way.

Very relieved, she will recover from that, and get a rest too!

Doesn't sound too serious but Fraser returning to Wellington. Maybe the Ferns feel Fiji & whoever in the final, may go the physical route and not worth risking their young future star, who could be a target. Let the older experienced players grind out the rest of the tourney, and get the Olympics spot sewn up.

Could Fraser even play for the Nix on Sunday?

Would be poor form by the Nix to play her less than one week after getting a concussion injury. I know they have said minor. But it's still a concussion

That's unusual, she talks about winning the Semi Final and coming away with 3 points.

Our best 45 of the tournament so far. Cutting one of the better opponents in the tournament to pieces. We can make this double figures if we want to (but suspect they'll roll out the subs)

5-0 at HT. Starting lineup below.

Not sure if the young Fijian player who trialled at the Nix in preseason is playing.

Solomons beat Samoa 2-0.

Rennie.
If you can't score that, you aren't an international player!
You can see the limitations of some players in this sort of game. Rennie in particular looks crap.

Unsure why she is even selected half the time, she has speed but no scoring ability. Like Jale Hand and riley combo.

Bit of a surprise as Solomons finish top of the other pool, so a Ferns verus Fiji semi on Friday

https://www.oceaniafootball.com/solomon-islands-stun-fiji-to-qualify-top-for-semi-finals-from-group-a-in-apia/

Talismanic forward Ileen Pegi had been quiet in front of goal in the first two Group matches but with the Solomon Islands needing at least a draw to guarantee a semi-final spot, the forward struck a hat-trick to secure a 3-1 win over Fiji and top spot in the Group.

Fiji also progress as runner-up and will face New Zealand in the semi-finals on Friday.

The result eliminates Pacific Games champions Papua New Guinea who defeated American Samoa 9-0 in the group’s other final group match.

Poor goal keeping there. That's still the Achilles heel of a lot of women's football.

Must be time to put Wilkinson out to pasture.

The young ladies look technically more gifted and can actually score against island teams. Looks like Fraser, Hand and Page-Riley and our long term attacking options.

Clegg is one
Hannah Blake is the another. Don't understand why she's not with this squad.
Rennie might come right. She needs to find a pro contract now she has finished playing youth football in the US and actually grind away in that kind of environment for a few years. Think she is best on the right wing, not really a striker.

To be fair, island nations are a pretty low level for womens football.

At the World Cup, the goalkeepers were excellent, and they're generally pretty decent in WSL/NWSL too. A-League Women on the other hand.....

Jacqui Hand makes it 1-0 with a nice strike!

She's had a great tournament and is the best forward NZ has atm

3-0 after 26 minutes.

We've gotten better as the tournament has gone on, was a touch concerned after the Tonga game but been very cruisy sailing since. Great for our team to build confidence in the final third, yes the opponents are poor but after years of criticism it will be a good feeling to get the goals flowing again.

Playing Thailand twice in April too, we have a chance to continue that.

4-0. Jale scores.

Paige-Riley has also looked good. Pretty awful opposition (lots of complete shanks by the Solomons) so can't get much of a real gauge.

But Fraser sitting just behind P-R, Hand and Jale/Clegg might actually manage some goals on the bigger stages in the years ahead.
