I was a bit gutted with Vicilich. i am a big fan, but seeing him cheat- coz that is what it was- like that was very disappointing. and then to argue the point and get a red was just plain dumb. Glad he is not to miss the qualifiers- would've been right p***ed if he had been.

Overall, good game, but I worry that we will be underdone for the quals. But certainly lots to be positive about- bring on Nov 14!

Watch that one over a couple of times, then you'll see why Paston sat on the bench for two seasons behind Moss.

He didn't.  The oinly time one was chosen ahead of the other was when the other was unavailable then they invariably kept their spot until the situation was reversed.

How's my driving? - Whine here

To the people who think Moss is so much better then Paston. What would of Moss done in that game that was so much better?

caught the ball better, kicked the ball better, thrown the ball better, organised the defence better, and looked better. Not much other than that thogh

+1

Paston used his face well though. That had to hurt but to his credit he seemed to carry on without going down. Thought it could nearly have knocked him out.

Took a while for this thread to get hijacked, but it was inevatable

That is one being picked over another. Sure, they swapped through injury but if both are available and one is picked, it is ahead of the other option.

I find it amazing how Paston can make one mistake while other keepers make millions of mistakes - some that don't result in goals but could of easily been had luck been the other teams way or if the other team were better - yet Paston is the one having a terrible game. I rate this above Crowthers performance and minus the goal, Pastons best performance all year. I will not lie, Paston is not the best keeper in the world or the A-League but he is certainly better then most.

How about a thread where those who want to debate the merits of Moss and Paston can go?

Not to unnecessarily prolong this, but when you say better than most, who are you referring to?

Crikey! Nearly forgot how the Phoenix stuffs that first goal without defenders on the post. Screw defensive philosophy of crowding out the box, the goalkeeper on the middle goalline can't cover the whole goal. Rather reactive defending on corners by having defenders on the post and have proactive tight marking otherwise.

Been done to death so he hijacks all other threads.

Why does every thread have to descend into this?

I thought Paston played quite well after his opening mistake. A number of good, acrobatic saves and seemed to grow more confident as the game progressed.
As a side note i believe this to be our first friendly game victory vs 2006!

Wasn't there are deflection in that free kick goal? Paston was going the right way but the ball caught a deflection and so it looked awkward on the screen. If that is the case, are we not just a bit to quick to say "Burn Paston burn"

Yes they are. Then they complain I ruin the thread when they are the ones who started it. But for the sake of this thread I will leave it there.

Who was Paston's backup in the Jordan game? James Bannatyne?

Out of interest, who's our likely #3 keeper if one of them got injured?

Probably Spoonley.

Three for me, and two for them.

I watched it again today and no one can say there was a deflection with the first goal. It certainly didn't look like one and for those trying to say there was -  there was no end on shot. Sounds nice for an excuse but it looked like it swerved and Paston went wrong way initially.
We will get murdered in the qualifiers if we give away as many free kicks that close to the area as we did yesterday. I got sick of seeing them

Yep, 3-1 v Georgia was the last friendly win for the AW's - 27/5/2006.

Trivia question: Name the only two players who started that match and also started the one yesterday against Jordan.

When was the last time we beat a team ranked higher than 100 in the world outside of the OFC? LondonChris2009-09-11 21:45:45

The OFC Nation Cup 1-0 win against Australia on July 14th 2004 was the last game against a team above 100 but that was in the OFC.

We drew with a number of countries above 100 and we play heaps of games in OFC and not much games abroad or outside OFC.

The last time we beat a team over 100 and outside OFC is twice against China in August 1990 in friendlies. At the end of the 80s era when we had something with a decent ranking.
