NTC players have a better chance of making the team as they are seen by the people who pick the team. If a player isn't picked for NTC the likely hood of them getting anywhere near the team a low when you consider their are about 60 players for that age band at NTC. No player is guaranteed anything so that shouldn't be a suprise.

I think at the end of the day if the player is good enough they will get a look in at some stage.

This is just bullshit. The coaches at NTC don't pick the national team. Dear lord.

Look at the last U17 team - there were loads of players who weren't attending NTC anymore who made the cut. All the Ole kids for a start. That should tell you everything you need to know about NZ Football's hollow threats.

Not attending NTC doesn't seem to have held Ryan Thomas back.

WOW, dear lord.  I'm pretty sure the guy that does pick the team will have been at each of the camps at some stage last week. So those players that attended are already at an advantage! Didn't say anything about NTC coaches picking the side.
Ryan is doing very well, not sure why he got mention here.

Ryan Thomas never went to an NTC. He's still an All White.

Do you know that he was at all those camps? Or are you assuming?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Didn't realise you had to go to NTC to be an All White. Sure he wont be last to do this. still not sure of Ryan being an All White and it's relevance to the selection process of u17 side.
as for coach, I know he was at two.

Well that is commendable, but not consistent with past practice at all.

Coach did get to 3x NTCs. First training camp in July. First round invitations sent. Coach visited Nix academy whilst in Wellington.

Rumour mill running overtime about a) who got invited and b) how much it costs!

We (In The Zone) asked NZF for an official squad list but they didn't respond.

Sounds like FdJ's pay-for-play is still in effect for the 17s, but not the 20s. Weird.

List of players = squad list.

Aren't you interested in who did/didn't make it from your region? I know In The Zoners are interested.

Some surprising omissions from Wellington already.

NZF won't give you a list because they they don't consider they've picked a squad.

As to training camp, I've heard - unofficially - 3 x Football South, 3 x Canterbury, couple from Nelson. No surprise omissions, a surprise '99 inclusion.

As to Wellington, I know none (?) of the  98/99 Ole boys were even considered for the camp as they were not allowed to even trial for NTC (something amiss with fair and due process there I reckon). Not sure how many 98/99s are at Ole; a handful I guess. If that's one of the "surprising omissions from Wellington", I'm not surprised.

There are a few 99s at Ole, but not sure they have that many 98s. The surprises I was referring to aren't from Ole anyway.

I guess if this is just a "best of NTC" initial camp then no list is fair enough, but on the other side, why not release it?

I also guess if this is just best of NTC and they're going to look around more widely later then the Ole lads (and others) aren't missing too much.

Ole has 2-3 98s who live/train there.

Have heard there will be other opportunities, but agree, surely nothing to lose for NZF by being transparent about the whole process; but it's not exactly in the culture is it? Plus as we all know, different coaches see & look for different things.

o

that is what we have been told for approx 18 months. (South Island)

Not sure if this is nationwide policy but would hope it is a constant application.

Nobody knows. It's a secret. Shhh.

This is more of a prelim trial group as far as I'm aware. They go to Auckland for a camp. Think it's a fairly large group.

I will bet you plenty that anyone who is genuinely good enough will get in the team, NTC or not.

South Island contingent I know: Ben O'farrell (dndn), Ollie ceci (central Otago), charlie boot (GK, Halswell). Lyle mattheson and Simon chretian (cashmere technical), Joel Peterson (chch/nix academy). Not sure if there is a Nelson lad there or not.

Good to see players from all over NZ getting a crack to impress... might stop some of the bitching and moaning which normally is associated with selections.

But, I'd say that anyone coming in from here would have to be a stand out. I don't expect they'll bring in another tranche of NTC/other players.
