Don`t forget the U17`s didn`t have a good run of results leading into their tournament
Only in the country 2 days the weather is a lot warmer, I suggest it will be a better result come Saturday.

Any thoughts as to why so few NZ U17 World Cup players make it through to U20 World Cup level. From my recollection only 6 of this year's U20 squad have played in an U17 World Cup. Is potential player development potential over a two-to-three year period too hard to see or are our NZF people not looking in the right places, or do they have different priorities?

Could be a number of reasons?
1. With the success of the All Whites, a number of overseas players have made themselves known and available to NZF.
2. Many countries have similar issues due to players maturing at different rates and those that are bigger and more effective at 17 get caught up and often overtaken by 20.
3. With more players getting contracts overseas they may not be available for U20 World Cups, Chris Wood being a prime example this time round.
4. Other players may just be in the states at university and out of sight? eg. last 17s captain Gordon Murie?
Alternatively it could just be down to coaches point of view.. a number of past 17s players were close to selection this time round and even featured in the qualifiers; Sole, Built, Carr, Chettleborough etc. but just didn't make the final cut.

Welcome back Seatts.

It's a good question.  It's a general trend in the world though, so you have to assume it's more to do with player growth and development at that age than any failure in the system.

Apart from genetics, for me the big problem we have is coaching continuity.  When was the last time we had the same U17 or U20 or U23 coach for two tournaments in a row?

There is no consistency or uniformity across those age group teams.  No strategy for progressing players through from one team to the next.  We just take each tournament as it comes.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

...and then a new coach comes in and players you would have thought would have walked in to the side mysteriously miss out.

Does anyone else have a coach do the 17's then keep the same group to 20's and the 23s rather than sticking with the same age group each time? So repeating U17s?

How's my driving? - Whine here

It was there on Monday as "FIFA U 20's" when I booked it to record. Sky have mysteriously changed it to a Tri nations replay as you say Tegal.Grrr ..its a plot...

ps. In fact, on my bookings planner it still reads" FIFA -U20 World Cup"!
A simple mistake ..or some pro-rugby SKY staffer sabotage perhaps? Tsk,tsk.. tampering with the schedules like that.. will contact Sky now.

They're different age groups Newsy. So this year's 17s are not the next 20s and this year's 20s are not the next 23s. Etc etc.

This is on purpose so that kids aren't disadvantaged by being in a birth year that is between age groups. Whatever year you are born in you will either be bang on for an U17 World Cup or an U20 World Cup but not both.

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Thanks again Tegal for pointing it out.
As I had booked it at the start of the week I probably wouldn't have checked again. If we hadn't followed up who knows, unlikely but it may have slipped through without being shown. I would have been pissed if it hadn't recorded.
Looks Like FINA swimming highlights took the hit this time...at least it wasn't kayaking again..they would really hate us!!

3-1 to who?

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

Like any NZ team of any age or gender. We could always quite possible lose 6-0. I think we will lose 2-0. I hope we can get at least one goal. But I pray that we play out of our skins, find some new young heroes and win 2-1 with the winner coming in injury time.

But what happened to all our players from Professional clubs and acadamies? No Chris Wood is a bl00dy shame, but i dont blame him. no Marco for this game still? another big shame. I hope that payne from the U17 gets game time and has a blinder. I was quietly impressed with what he looks to offer.

This has got to be the toughest age group team for Nz mens teams. Probably even tougher than our senior team...cause at least they got full time first team professionals. This is the gap we really got to fill, our players are probably a couple of years behind in playing ability at this level. i.e. most of the successful one might go on to better things at 22 or 23.

anyway fingers crossed and good luck to the boys. as always there is always the opportunity of getting more players into better clubs through these WC shop windows.

If we build it, they will come...

A month ago i was feeling quietly confident of a couple results but that was before the following...

1. We didn't pick our best midfielder - Milicich yoou muppet.

2. Our best striker wasn't realeased.

3 Rojas dropped out injured (seems to be injured a lot... a little weak perhaps)

Still i live in hope.

Huge, huge blow that Rojas is out. Not only for the team but also for him to do his stuff infront of the large numbers of international scouts.

Totally agree that this is a huge ask for lads that in many cases are nonpros with even limited NZF experience. When you look at other team sheets there are some players who have had experiance like plus 50 games in Seria A.

Still.....if they keep organised, especially in defense and battle hard they could surprise. The big thing will be to keep their concentration at high levels for the full 90 mins. I was reasonably confident until Wood and Rojas dropped out.....now we can just hope!!!
