yeah nice display of Portuguese diving there. milking it for all its worth. Would we make it through if we scored a goal and the other games ended 1-0 to Cameroon??

Yep probably, though top of third finishes likely

this is quite frustrating

some really lazy and naive challenges from us, similar to the end of the uruguay match

I think Portugal are more tired than we are. We have done this before - scoring when we aren't playing that well and against the run of play.
We need to try though - the ball ain't gonna find its way into the back of the net on its own

ok was wrong about the goal, but was disappointed with how we played, even tho we were a goal down and out of thee world cup if result stood, the only reason we looked any better was because portugal stood back. didnt really go out there and try to get a goal for the result, was hugely disappointing.
would or preferred 2-0 or 3-0 loss if we atleast tried to attack more

Positives: we didn't get spanked, 2 draws, more experience gained, we look good in black

Negatives: our passing is poor, our positional and tactical awareness needs to improve, our fitness leaves a bit to be desired, our players ball watch to much and are nearly always flat footed.

As long as we learn from these games we will improve but it's not only the players that need to learn it's our coaches as well.

Still, well done to the boys they did put the effort in and you can't fault them for that.

The way I read the groups, I think we still have a reasonable chance of qualifying... ??

wait its 4 best 3rd place right?

so we could still go through if spain and Kosta rica win, or croatia and guatamalia draw

Yeah we still have a chance to go through despite the commentator saying otherwise, so to say you would have rather we lost 2 or 3 nil is just stoopid

the other teams would have 1 point so wouldnt of mattered,
if australia got draw, they would beat us on goals scored anyways

yeah but it came down to goal difference between us and uruguay, so if we had lost by 2 or 3 then we'd definitely be going home now

cameroon have beaten uruguay 1-0 so we are confirmed third, now we need to hope 1 of the 2 other results to go our way.

based on my entirely unscientific assessment i'd say our chances are still about 50-50ShowUsYaNix2011-08-06 12:08:22

There's two options for us qualifying as I see it:

If Croatia vs Guatemala is a draw, we qualify.

OR

If Spain beat Australia AND Ecuador don't win vs Kosta Rica.

Definitely not out, and a 2-0 or 3-0 loss could definitely hurt us. In saying that, I agree we didn't really look very good at all.

Actually  it doesnt matter what happens in those groups as its group A,E and F we have to finish better than.

Looking at the draw winner of C plays the best out of 3rd qualifiers from A, B and F, which will be A (france, Korea or Mali) or F England. And winner of D plays 3rd best from B, E and F which will be England. So I think the only chance we have is if 3rd place in group A  is worse than England. We would then play the winner of D (Nigeria or Saudi) as England would be playing winner of C and we would have 2 points compared to the 1 of Panama (3rd in E).

I guess it comes down to which draw they make first? If they make the BEF one first we're definitely out - (unless they make ACD before that and A is the highest qualifier!), but still a chance if they make the ABF one first.
Seems like a strange draw tbh and still not 100% sure I'm right - the FIFA website draw might be wrong.

I know I'm confused!

No, forget all that.  If we end up being one of the best third-placed teams, it'll mean that the four best third-placed finishers will be from either groups A, B, C and F or groups A, B, D and F.

In both of those scenarios, B3 (us) plays C1, which will almost certainly be Spain.

I think you're over complicating it. Either that, or I'm looking at it too simply...

From the FIFA regulations for the tournament:

"the four best teams among those ranked third qualify for the round of 16."

So it's simply the four best third placed teams that get through. I'd ignore the part of the draw you're looking at, as I think that's just setting out where to put them in the next round.

partially confused from this, but it does matter the results in those pools. we have to be one of top 4 3rd place sides, so if one of thoe results doesnt go our way we will be out,

That is completely embarrassing. I mean, I disagree with a lot they write, but to get it so completely wrong is pathetic.
