American commentator makes a fair point. This squad played 2 seasons together in a team specifically designed for this World Cup yet I don't see anything particularly noticable that would show its given them an advantage.

How bad would we have been otherwise though?

It scares me to think about it.

We are so slow. The american's are on another level, speed, placing and class, Our long balls and chips is not the answer, Cmon boys

I didn't see the Ukraine game but based on that I don't have much hope for this side - Tuiloma clearly on a different level but it's hit and hope stuff and zero combinations

This is awful. No interplay or ability to string more than 2 touches together

The Americans look ok but I didn't think they were superstars.  Just better individually in an attacking sense

I feel sorry for Tuiloma. He goes from training with Marseille to having to play in a team that has no purposeful system.

our midfield is all over the place.  There appears to be no structure.

What even is the formation out there? It seems like we don't even have a striker at all.

I think Sail is a very good shot stopper but being a keeper is a lot more than that. You have to be able to command the box, clear properley and not give second chances. A lot of talent there but needs top quality goal keeping coaching. I hope Moss can get him up to speed.

I started watching the Ghana game instead.

Everytime NZ attacks it's end up in a meaningful cross, and the midfield seems to be totally lost

Things I noticed

  • Unlike the Ukraine game, when we have the ball, we actually try and find an open man. The 1st half of the Ukraine game was like 'oooohhhh ball! Must kick it!' At least this game, there is a little bit more looking for the open man. Wynne has only kicked it away twice from what I can recall.
  • The USA have been allowed to play cause our midfield is invisible. Ridenton and Dyer are dire. It makes USA look far better than they are. Dyer should not be there.
  • For the 1st 25, I thought we were ok. The keeping howler by Sail will probably mean that other clubs that may have been watching him, wont be.
  • Why is it that clearances from corners, we want to head it directly out in front of goal 25 out. Why not head it towards the touch line. All we do it give it to one of their to have a shot.

And on comes Patterson, the black hole.

Count how many times he runs at the back 4 and loses it when there was an open man to pass to.

I do not get all the angst. The USA team plays at a different level because their senior team does too. Their coaching quality and also available player pool reflects this. We are not exactly doing ourselves any favours, but I am impressed with the Americans. Hope they won't take it easy against Ukraine.

Our guys are guilty of something serious IMHO though: ball watching, and lack of decent movement off the ball. Individual player quality and good coaching/ drilling makes up for the rest of the reasons we are down, and (so far in this game) goalless.

Actually, getting outplayed quite a bit these days

Would have to say the USA dont really look anything special. Although they are probably on complete cruise control.

So you don't get why people think this team is playing poorly, then highlight the reasons that they are playing poorly? What?

I don't sing at all and watch football for enjoyment. If there is another game on that has more entertaining football on I will watch it, regardless of who I support.
