I have a somewhat tangential question that may lead to further questions.

Aucklanders.  When did Ryan de Vries arrive here now he has an AWs cap?

How's my driving? - Whine here

Pretty sure he's been around since 09. Remember him playing for Glenfield College at a school tournament that year.

Three for me, and two for them.

De Vries played for Mili when he coached them at Waitakere and has not been there for a while... I would say that Buffy would be pretty close to being on the money.

Letter went to international players by email today advising them that NZF believe, following advice from lawyers, that there ARE grounds to appeal on BOTH the process and the rules applied.

Public announcement expected this arvo.

Ooohhh am I an international player? I'm a wee bit old.

Hi Michael,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Executive Committee and management team of NZ Football to update you personally on the events of the last two weeks, arising from the disqualification of our Men’s Olympic team from a tournament in Papua New Guinea. This disqualification arose as a result of alleged discrepancies in the eligibility of one of our players.

May I first say that we are all deeply upset and sorry for the stress and concern that this difficult situation has caused our players, their families, team and management and the wider football community.

Since the initial decision we have been working hard to understand the series of events and issues that led to the disqualification. Last week we received the formal written advice from the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) Disciplinary Committee which outlined the grounds on which we were disqualified and the rules that they applied in doing so. As our CEO said at the outset of this situation, playing a qualifying tournament within another event (in this case the Pacific Games) has led to considerable confusion. We believed this had been clarified in advance of the event, however the decision of the OFC says that the OFC did not think this was the case.

In the last few days the Executive Committee has met and been presented with comprehensive advice from our legal team. Having had the opportunity to review all of the information now available to us, we remain disappointed at the sequence of events that led to the harsh decision to disqualify our team. Your Executive Committee has therefore unanimously agreed that there are sufficient grounds to appeal, both in terms of the process undertaken, and the rules applied.

We will be filing our appeal later this week, and will keep you fully informed of developments as and when we can. You will appreciate that given the legal process we are now entering into; it would not be appropriate to comment further at this time.

In the meantime our players remain our top priority. Our management team is currently reviewing all of our internal processes and eligibility information to ensure we do not put ourselves in a position where this could happen again. We intend to have this internal review completed in the next few weeks, and once complete will put in place a programme of action to remedy any eligibility concerns should any arise. This work programme is our key focus, and will be completed irrespective of the outcome of the appeal.

We have been working hard to build a better professional football operation in New Zealand, to support our shared ambition to qualify for and win at World Cup events on a regular basis. While we have made some great progress - evidenced by our Football Ferns and U20 Men making history at their recent World Cups - this situation has shown us that we still have work to do.

Please be assured that you have the full commitment of your Executive Committee and management to achieve this.

I’m conscious that many of you may well have concerns and questions. Please don’t hesitate to contact me personally should you wish to discuss them further. In the meantime we thank you for your commitment to New Zealand Football, and appreciate all of your concern and ongoing support.

Yours sincerely,

Deryck Shaw

Quite clearly they are appealing based on protest process and which rules applied, not that he was actually eligible.  Big rethink of how we qualify immigrant players is in order - this is actually a very big deal for us

But not enough to eliminate any ambiguity in the first place and remove the risk.

Plus not fighting it would be an admission of guilt effectively. Or at least an admission that they had misinterpreted the rules. No one  wants to admit they fudgeed up

Fairly sure Article 10 of the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights would supercede any code of ethics that states that.

lol.

we don't even bother with our own Bill of Rights much of the time, let alone things such as:

Article 22.
  • Everyone, as a member of society, has the right to social security and is entitled to realization, through national effort and international co-operation and in accordance with the organization and resources of each State, of the economic, social and cultural rights indispensable for his dignity and the free development of his personality.
Article 23.
  • (1) Everyone has the right to work, to free choice of employment, to just and favourable conditions of work and to protection against unemployment.
  • (2) Everyone, without any discrimination, has the right to equal pay for equal work.
  • (3) Everyone who works has the right to just and favourable remuneration ensuring for himself and his family an existence worthy of human dignity, and supplemented, if necessary, by other means of social protection.
  • (4) Everyone has the right to form and to join trade unions for the protection of his interests.
Article 24.
  • Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.
Article 25.
  • (1) Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and well-being of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care and necessary social services, and the right to security in the event of unemployment, sickness, disability, widowhood, old age or other lack of livelihood in circumstances beyond his control.
  • (2) Motherhood and childhood are entitled to special care and assistance. All children, whether born in or out of wedlock, shall enjoy the same social protection.

Also the use of "lawyer" and "ethics" in the same sentence is quite amusing.

So we are all pretty much in agreement that the appeal is to save face more than anything.

I'm confused by this, I didn't think we had any left already.

Hoping on hope and expecting nothing more than a Delboy type promise.

I was not concerned until I read the bit saying "after extensive advice and consultation from our legal team"......thats when I started to worry.LOL.  Just face saving IMO. It will be Oceania who will be hearing the appeal. They got Mai Chin(spp) in to make sure their case for ditching NZ is legally water tight. This is a wasted excercise unless NZF is prepared to follow it through to the International Sports Courts....which will result in lots of money for lawyers and a doubtful result.

Aucklanders.  When did Ryan de Vries arrive here now he has an AWs cap?

Topical piece on TV3 tonight suggesting NZF had learnt what the correct statute to apply was etc, through enquiring about de Vries eligibility, just with large staff turnover, those currently in charge, presumably, weren't aware of it . Perhaps in a file propping up a fax machine.

Just keeps getting worse doesn't it. The organisation needs a thorough clean out, it needs to be more transparent in it's processes, It is it's own worse enemy. For them to vote against Blatter is one thing, For them to keep stuffing up in these important matters including the saga of the last failed attempt to qualify in the last world cup and keep the findings in house makes them just as worse as Blatter's organisation.

Beyond belief comment from the CEO... something like this ... We believe he was eligible now we will have to check it out legally... and that they have previous instruction from FIFA on the same issue on file in the office....
