Matildas have secured a friendly against England in London, in the April window. Penultimate international window before the start of the Women’s World Cup in July.

They play Jamaica tomorrow, in last game of their own little mini tourney in Aussie. Wins over Spain (3-2) & Czech Republic (4-0) to date.

No news yet on who the Ferns are to play in that April window (2 friendlies). Suggest for the confidence it be someone beatable. Though we initially thought Portugal & Argentina were winnable games! Hopefully Esson/Leat, Percival & Longo (longshot maybe) are all available. Either keeper & Percival will solidify that defence.

I hope I'm wrong, but I reckon we'll only see Nayler in goal going forward, it's incredibly short sighted by Klimkova not to give your reserve keepers some game time pre world cup - but I'm starting to some sense in the #Klimkovaout movement.
Trouble is that Nayler IS the reserve keeper! The way things are going, are the top two likely to actually make the WC???

Whether they are or not, Im amazed that we havent seen anyone else between the sticks.

Sheeaf has to play the next game surely???

You must be some coach.

do you disagree? Always good to have someone that has a differing opinion from the rest...been in that boat before.

What suggest she can coach? What have you seen from her or heard come from her mouth? Genuinely interested to know.

Stats are dire - performances dire - culture miles off top performing nations -  fan public support wavering -press conferences "yes we can do better" x 26

If we didn't have a world cup to host the womens game in NZ would be in absolute crisis.

Your national team has to perform. Just has too...

But again we live in a NZ Sporting world that i guess results do not matter anymore...

Three things that I think can help:
1. Pass the ball earlier to create extra time for the recipient. Too much slow passing across the back, meaning the opposition are all marking up your likely targets.
2. Switch the play more. Jale never ever got the ball on the right flank in the first half an hour.
3. Wilkinson needs someone running off her. She did three good flick ons with her head and no one thought she might do it, so the defenders said 'thank you'.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

I just watched the highlights of the game last night and Wilkinson had a good chance to shoot after being fed by Bowen, Liv Chance had a great opportunity to score but hit it straight at the keeper, and then there was the shot from Jale that was goal bound but hit Chance. She had a couple of other shots that were just wide, plus scored the goal where it was called by VAR offside. Jale put in a great cross after Steinmetz through ball, which their centre back intercepted and might have been ruled a pass back in another game. If Bowen had cleared that ball earlier- which I’m sure in hindsight she wished she had, then it could have been a draw or a win on another day.

Clegg wouldn’t have any problem stepping up to the Ferns, she already has significant experience at international tournaments, and she has been brought up in an environment where that was normal. If she can handle the pressure that is up to her to prove. Also from what we’ve seen these last couple of internationals are at the same level as a ALW all stars team. Hannah Keane from Western would score goals at this level, the quick winger from Roar would cause team’s problems with her pace. And when Foster played her first minutes, she wasn’t shown up.
Liv Chance looks like our most likely source of goals- she cracked a great shot against Korea. Maybe she can play as a ten behind Wilkinson and hit some goals from outside the box.
If we looked at a potential first 11 for the next WWC cycle, with the 100 cap players retired, and kept some European players.

                  Clegg
 Chance   Whinham   Jale
    Wisnewski   Steinmetz
  Foster Bowen Barry Bott
                    Leat

Our European based players that are playing at the highest level are Bott and Leat in the WSL no one is playing in the states asides from Ali Riley. It seems that the Scottish league and second division in the UK are at a similar level- crowds of a few hundred people. And the Finland and Norwegian area leagues are they that much better than the ALW top 4 teams? Hasset played there and has looked great on occasions in ALW and other times anonymous.

Bev Preistman - coaching the Canadian women’s team was in the staff of John Herdman for years, she followed him from NZ to Canada, did she have success in her own right before Herdman switched to the men’s side and she took over the women’s team? Having Christine Sinclair and other world class players makes it heaps easier to get results. In that situation, maybe Klitka might have the same success.

When we reached the men’s World Cup in South Africa we had some gritty defenders, a decent A league level keeper, grafter mid fielders like Simon Elliot, and tall Wilkinson style forwards. Bertos was hot and cold and we experimented with different formations and then ended up as the only team undefeated instead of going for a winner in that last game. Herbert arguably got the best out of the group of players we had at the time. I think a reality check is needed.
If you compare the Auckland Knights to Talays Nix it has taken years of work to get to that level and Seripisos helped to keep them alive. Hopefully it doesn’t come to that same last ditch effort to keep the Nix women’s team around after the NZF support is stopped.  But just like we have the likes of Joe Bell and Elliot and Carace coming through that would have raised the technical level of Herbert’s All Whites, and Nix the current crop of female players in the Ferns and at ALW are pretty much back in the Auckland Knights stage of their development and playing levels. In 15 years time we will have seen a massive improvement in the women’s game and I can’t wait to see what level they can get to. Will Clegg be able to retire and sit on her millions like Ryan Nelson can?

Getting off track a bit but just saw Chile against Haiti for a spot at the World Cup. Haiti 2-1 winners despite being ranked about 20 places lower.

Thing that stood out to me about Haiti, is that even though their ball skills, like ours, weren't fantastic, they executed an effective game plan (again) and played to their strengths (quick attackers who are their star players). 33% possession today against Chile and 48% possession the other day against Senegal (who they beat 4-0).

Got me thinking about the discussion around the Ferns - it seems like we don't know what our strengths are (and "giving 100%" and "showing pride for the fern" are not genuine strengths) and so whenever we play somebody that is on a similar or better level to us squad quality wise, we don't have a clear enough gameplan, get dominated and generally lose.

But maybe that's down to player availability - because I think with the right selections, we could really look to utilise the attacking capabilities, crosses and runs of our fullbacks (who are our best players), Ali Riley and CJ Bott. Don't agree with a back three (not least because it was disastrous the other night and leaves us empty in midfield), but have two centrebacks, one of the midfielders play as a 6 in front of them (Steinmetz?), then two more creative ones in front of them (probably Hassett and Percival) as an alternative means of attack, pick wingers that will suit Riley and Bott (whoever that is) and then use the height of Hannah Wilkinson up front for crosses and target man play.

I think as someone else mentioned when you look at the likely best 11 Ferns players, the most effective way would be to setup as the 2010 AWs. May not be the prettiest football, but the highest chance of getting out of their group.

The fact that Klimkova is still experimenting with either a back 4 or 5 so close to the CWC kicking off, seems to indicate she still doesn't have a clear idea how the Ferns are going to play. And remember her and Riley playfully boasted they were going to beat Portugal, so in their minds/plans everything was tracking along smoothly.

https://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/world-cup/131284619/indiahpaige-riley-set-to-return-for-football-ferns-as-they-face-argentina-again

Right back CJ Bott has returned to England and her club, Leicester City, as a result of the calf injury that ruled her out of Monday’s match.

Not sure I put much stock in the "when the ferns are at full strength" optimism. Wasn't the last time they were at full strength in Feb 22 a 0-5 loss to the USA? Or the 0-1 loss to Iceland or the 0-0 draw with the Czechs before that? The older players are too stuck in their ways.

Looks like they Haiti had a great midfield/er and were able to cut open the Chilean defense 5 or 6 times which they should have finished. It looks like aside from the Goal and hitting the bar Chile did not have a shot in anger.

Today, no Bott, Riley, surely no Taylor,Rennie, or Edwards.
Paige Riley likely to play a half,Hassett deserves a rest, will play a half a most.

Doesn't leave too many options.
Sheaf has to play surely to god, Barry will have a half, Foster could well start.

Will the Ferns score?

More looking forward to watching Panama.

Liv Chance has looked like our only decent player.

I expect nothing, so i guess I can only be happy by the end of the game?!

If we lose, I really do hope the coach resigns.

Hopefully the Argentinians roll out a 'B' team.

Bott was the best Ferns player against Portugal. Without Chance, hard to see how the team will score. A quality Foster dead ball to Wilkinson? Hopefully Klimkova has a plan, she's known in advance Chance wasn't playing the 3rd game.

Women's international odds are actually terrible. A weak Spain team was 1.74 to beat Aus the other day, in Australia... and yes Aus won.

I'm genuinely concerned about the crowds for the wwc for some games. No doubt some with particular teams will get good attendance though.

Quietly optimistic after this first 25. Apply some good pressure and getting shots off. Still yet to create a clear-cut chance though.

Steinmetz is keeping us in it.

Actually think she's not as bad as people say, sometimes it's about the lack of service and the wingers slacking off means she has to pick up their work.

That said - would be happy to see someone else given a go up there.

I have been quite happy with this half, even with a few players unavailable this is a massive improvement, more time for Jitka to work with the players to me has shown some promise.

Could perhaps get a bit more of the ball in the second half.

Oh, we're not going to beat Norway. The Plan A would be to beat Phillipines and Switzerland.

I admire Jitka for keeping the same ish starting 11. Shows what 3 games in succession does with combinations going quite well in the middle. Steinmetz, Hassett ans Cleverley doing well. Rennie with a great cross. It shows in the women’s game that most teams aren’t awesome at playing it out from the back and dealing with the pressure. We are coping well with their long ball’s winning everything in the air. I think Chance and Clegg and probably Jale would have scored if they had the chances that Wilkinson had tonight. As much as the final passes were frustratingly lacking in patches. That means that we have actually been in the attacking third more and that is a massive positive. I like us being direct and vertical from Bunge, Moore and Bowen. It means they are less likely to try and press us, as we go long. We also have done better at our organisation when out of possession, keeping their play to one side of the pitch which allowed Hassett more ball but Jale hardly got many touches in comparison. Just remember a few weeks ago the Nix scored 5 against Canberra and no one saw that coming. Fingers crossed!!!
