FIFA have called off tomorrow's World Cup qualifier between NZ & Fiji over the goalkeeper visa row.

Tomorrow's Oceania Zone soccer World Cup first leg qualifying match between New Zealand and Fiji at North Harbour has been called off.

The decision was announced by the Oceania Football Confederation at a press conference in Auckland today.

The match had been under a cloud since the New Zealand Government declined to issue a visa to goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau.

He was the only Fijian player to be denied an entry visa.

New Zealand has imposed strict sanctions on its Pacific island neighbour following the military coup in Fiji, including banning entry to anyone with military connections.

Tamanisau's father-in-law is in the Fijian military.

The match is likely to be rescheduled and played at a neutral venue.

Not good news at all.  There are also players that have been released by clubs for a game that didn't happen etc that may be difficult to get re-released.  This probably doesn't matter as much against Vanuatu or New Cal however it may be an issue against Fiji.

Where would a suitable neutral venue be?  You wouldn't want to be rescheduled to somewhere too hot.  Ultimately somewhere like Melbourne would be best however it is outside the federation so may be an issue.

- I wonder what would have happened visa-wise if this had been a rugby match?

 - and my sympathies go to Killen and any others who had to fly thousands of miles for the game.

They must be really gutted (and I wonder if they will get released for the re-scheduled date?)

Exactly. If they don't get re-released then we're in the same predicament as the Fijians are now i.e. missing our best players. Just issue the bloody visa and get on with it.

Personally I would have like the top four Oceania sides to enter the first round of the Asian Qualifications.  It would give the Oceania sides more exposure to international football and perhaps build up their confidence after a win or two.  For NZ it would be a far better qualification process where the team would be forged over the qualification period rather than just rushed in for a big game at the end.  It would also mean more meaningful games for points in NZ which would boost the image of the game domestically.  Certainly Australia has significantly benefitted from joining the Asian Federation.

The downside would be the cost to small nations such as Vanuatu.  It is not cheap flying to Turkmenistan and such.  Not that flying about the Pacific is a particularly cheap option in itself....

does this mean the Phoenix AW's and Ricki Herbert will now be urgently booking flights to Newcastle? Could turn out to be to the Nix's advantage after all perhaps?

Peters slams "unjust" football postponement
Newstalk - Friday October 12, 01:40 PM

Foreign Minister Winston Peters says FIFA has made an unjust decision in postponing the Football World Cup qualifier between the All Whites and Fiji in Auckland.

Tomorrow's match will not go ahead following a complaint from Fijian football authorities, after their goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau was denied a visa, as his father in law is in the Fijian military. New Zealand banned entrance to all members of Fiji's military and their families following last December's coup.

Foreign Minister Winston Peters says he is deeply disappointed the match will not go ahead.

"FIFA's decision to cancel the match is very disappointing, and is a complete U-turn by them. Football New Zealand was assured just a couple of days ago that the game would be played as scheduled."

Mr Peters says no one has the right to a visa. He says entry to another country is a privilege, and all countries retain the right to exclude individuals in accordance with their immigration policy. Mr Peters says sporting bodies do not determine those policies.

"I offered to explain New Zealand's policy on Fiji directly to FIFA president Sepp Blatter. However my office was told that Blatter was unavailable."

Mr Peters says the Government is looking at what assistance it can offer New Zealand Football, which will be adversely affected by FIFA's "unjust" decision.

SO, WINSTON, LET'S START WITH SOME OF THE FUNDING YOU HAVE GIVEN THE FAILING AMERICA'S CUP MILLIONAIRES, THEN THE FAILING (X 5) ALL BLACK TEAMS, AND THEN INSTRUCT THE MEDIA TO TAKE A MORE PASSIONATE APROACH TO THE BEAUTIFUL GAME. THEN DO US ALL A FAVOUR AND GO BACK TO CHINA, YOU FOREIGNER.

The most annoying thing is that the government's claims for turning down the visa was the the goalkeeper's father-in-law is a military policeman.

How can someone who is not married have a father-in-law

It means that the NZ government's decision to deny a visa on the family members in the military reason is spurious.

Come to think of it - when  are the in-laws 'family'?

I'm thinking of doing a Joel Griffiths to that linesman Winston Peters.

A$$burgers. Funny how they made an exception for the Fijian 7's team earlier in the year, but are quite happy to f*ck up our chances of qualifying for the real World Cup.

Darcy's producer had it right.  I bet the govt was thinking that it could do what it likes and treat football/FIFA just like another sport/organisation.  Not quite.

I think I'm right in saying that Trevor Mallard's father died this week so he may have more important things on his mind than a football match.  Sorry folks, Bill Shankly was wrong, there are more important things than a game.
