Brockie 1 goal in 45 games for the AW's. Why do people want him in the side?.

hes actually a pretty good left wing back mate.

The reason he fails at international level is that he has really poor technique and skill. He fools many because once in a blue moon he scores a stunning goal. The problem with his poor technique and skill relative to International level is that as you move up the quality scale it shows up and players such as Brockie simply cant cut it.

He is awful, 45 appearances and 1 goal is appalling. if people think he is of the quality the AW's need then the standard is horrendously low.

Disagree about JB having poor technique. Look at the replays of his goals, his shooting technique is outstanding, that's the reason he can score such spectacular goals with regularity. There's other areas of his game that could be improved significantly but technique isn't one of them.

particularly volleys and some of his distance shooting. His heading isn't too bad either.

Your joking right?. He has the first touch of a bulldozer. He cant pass water. Once in a blue moon he smacks in a monster shot and everyone gets fooled by it.

Once in a blue moon is scoring more than once every three weeks is it? Brockie has form and would be a good option off the bench. Also, as has been said, the OFC teams aren't of a good standard. The PSL might not be great, but its supposedly the best league in Africa and is of a much higher standard than any OFC local league.

Id disagree on the level of the PSL, i lived there for a bit and watched a lot of it. id say the the top half of teams would compete in the A-league.

Brockie got a couple of soft goals in that highlights clip from poor keeper clearances and keepers panicking when he pressured them. That made the goals look soft, as well as some weak defending. Nothing like that happens in the A league.

Brockie's problems- inconsistency, a bit of a lack of speed these days and not having brought his A-game to the AWs. I think his dry spell at the 'Nix looms large in people's memories and missing a pen in the Mexico game IIRC?

I thought he's generally been good for the AWs playing in wider areas and scored goals for us, Newcastle and now in SA.

You can't look at a team full of amateurs and the clubless and say as a pro with a fairly decent record that he shouldn't be an automatic selection in any AWs squad.

Bullying the island nations and getting a bagful might have been a good way to break that drought. But obviously Hudson doesn't trust him or there's something else there.

Thought Watson might have earned the right to be there too. Been decent for us and playing recently. Probably quicker and hungrier than Rory.

Still this is Hudson's team. He lives or dies by it. Maybe he thinks some guys don't fit with his changing room or whatever.

And I think there is a correlation between Brocks and Fallon here as they would both be there as senior players in the squad. It's just one is scoring and playing and one isn't.

150 games and 150 goals? Whatever you are on, I want some

Those stats are not even close.  I have watched every game  that JB has played in the A League since 2009 and I just don't rate him.

Use you fingers and toes if you have to but with those figures he has played 343 games and scored 88 goals.

A bit different from scoring a goal a game.

All of these Brockie-haters, you surely can't argue that Fallon deserves his place in the squad over Brockie though?

Sure you can, Brockie needs to play in a 2, no natural strike partner in the squad, our strength is our smaller agile attacking players who need a big guy to play off, we want to play larry long ball...

disregarding Fallon for a moment, shouldn't Brockie be ahead of Rogerson and/or Patterson? His record of goals for NZ is a red herring, he's often not played as a striker for the AWs and has always done a job when needed. You could play him as a striker, winger, or even a wingback or attacking midfielder if needed. He's in great form, he's an experienced professional, and he's match fit. Rogerson or Patterson might be better than him one day but I don't think anyone can say they are yet, and we should be selecting the best possible team now, not the best potential team.

When exactly?

Patterson has been offered a pro contract at Ipswich. He plays more of an AM role tho so not really comparable but from what little I've seen of him, I rate him.
I thought he was more of a winger/second striker for some reason? I can only really remember him from the Olympics qualifying where I think he played up front and scored a few. Anyway, he's still yet to play first team football right? I don't doubt he's got talent but it is he currently better than Brockie? Maybe as an AM he is, I haven't seen him play for the Ipswich reserves this season.

But then is Rogerson currently better than Brockie? Or is Smeltz, for that matter?

Apologies... yes he's more as you describe him. But being offered a contract at a Championship club would indicate he's got plenty of talent. He's definitely a more technical player than Brockie. Not sure Rogerson is better than Brocks at the moment though. Smeltz hasn't looked great this year but he's got undeniable results when playing for the AWs.

We'll probably have to rely on live tweets from NZ Football. No chance this is on TV anywhere.

When he's played for NZ? As far as I remember he's never looked like he shouldn't be in the AWs when he has played previously. He might not seem to ever be a matchwinner for us but he's far from the weakest link.

Yes, his goalscoring record for the AWs is poor, and yes he is a frustrating player a lot of the time. When he was at the Nix he used to annoy the crap out of me - despite his goals he seemed like a passenger most of the time. But even with all that  I'd rather he was an option in our squad than a 17yo who has never made a first team appearance for a pro club.

Yeah I agree with this entirely.

Do you really think its going to play out that way though? He'll either walk or do the 'we are still in the hunt for Russia line' which regardless of the result in PNG, the AWs will be.

People can argue all you want about the strength of a league, but it makes zero sense that Hudson says he  discounted his form because of the league when he is picking Boxall. I agree with JD that Brockie is much better when playing as a front two (but then so is Smeltz I think), and explain his struggles under Ernie. But why not say that? That's a perfectly fine reason.

And as Stephen Holloway said, he played Moses Dyer and T H-W in Northern Premier League on the weekend and that was not especially quick.

One of my major concerns is that this already "inexperienced" teams does not pick up any injuries in the upcoming warm up games. The training schedule, loading and "progressive fitness mode training twice a day" is crazy!? Its old school! It promotes nothing but higher risk of injuries! Not sure how much "fitness" you can gain in 7 days!?

With the daunting competition schedule ahead I fear we will be walking wounded and exhausted by the time we arrive and (fingers crossed0 get our of the group for the "big games".

Permalink Permalink

can't agree more it sounds very old school and somewhat idiotic. I'd argue international footballers should have an excellent baseline level of fitness. But then again running shuttles down Onehunga rec twice a week may not be enough.

I can understand the focus on fitness levels. Hudson is saying, they can't beat us technically or tactically, but what can bring them into the game are conditions.

He's simply trying to minimise the biggest advantage the island teams have.
