Oly_Whites certainly deserved it.
Chile looked good early on, played the ball out from very deep from the back in 3-5-2 formation, and had several very quick and skilful forwards.
The biggest worry for me through the game was the way Chile attackers equalled or outnumbered White defenders time and time again. The ball often was never realised to these strikers, but Chile pushed numbers up to join the strikers very quickly, and the White midfield didnt pick them up.
Chile must have a dozen decent efforts that were close, but all skimmed over the bar harmlessly. All these efforts were from penalty box or further out.
Now Ive given Ellensohn a bad press before in the Team Wellington forum, but I thought he had a much better game tonight, played a deeper role on the left and I much preferred him there than when Ive seen him try and lead the attack.
He scored the goal with a deep far post header from a free kick, but should have scored one earlier when he was put clear through, but hit it with his favoured left foot when the right foot would surely have seen a goal.
Chile then had a man sent off for 2 yellows ,a nd their gamemanship got worse and worse - harassing the referee, holding and kicking back,, and verbal tirades. The ref must have collected a full set of yellow cards, and got another red later on when a Chilean player did something when the ball was dead, probably swore at the ref.
Sportmanship was not on the agenda for Chile, and they blatantly dived a few times, including once the box near the end that was definitely not a penalty.
Overall I though the ref did well in very trying circumstances. The Oly Whites were no angels either and mixed it a few times too, and with the slippery pitch, there were a hell of a lot of fouls given.
An entertaining game in difficult conditions, which probably helped NZ rather than Chile.
