for those of you driving a warning about the road conditions from the police...

Police are urging motorists in the greater Wellington region to exercise extreme care when driving this evening.

Heavy rain and poor visibility are making for treacherous driving conditions - particularly in the Kapiti-Mana area.

Police are reminding motorists to be conscious of speed and following distances and to drive with their headlights on in areas of poor visibility.

OWs 1-0 up with five minutes to play. Chileans have had a man sent off and are "losing it" according to our man on the ground. Ellensohn the goal scorer.

Good win. Is that against the same Chile side that played Australia?

Any outstanding individual performances from the young lads?

Chile finished with 9 men.  They had (what looked like a good) penalty claim in the last 4 mins.

good game  Chile had Two men sent off and numerous yellow cards
oly whites out muscled them and were deserved winners, dominating most of the game.

Same team that played Australia earlier this week. Beat Aust 4-3, and drew 1-1. Australia started 21 players in the two games as they sought to finalise selection of their squad. Great result for our team. Chile finished 4th in the South American Olympic qualifying competition.

A guy hit Drapes in the face and drew blood, I think that drew a second yellow. I'm also pretty sure that was the first red.

Bevan had a shocker, it started with "Lamer than a Llama" to which Rob responded "that's Peru!"
I decided I hope to never reach 30.

correct. it was the first red but it was in the back of the head.

I'm pretty sure the 2nd red was a straight red.  Missed what it was for thoud.

Draper missed a one on one. As did someone else in the first half. Can't remember who it was.

The only real chance i can remember for Chile was a header from point blank range in the first half.  Was well save by Little.

This is great news.  I'm so proud of the boys.  I think we aren't going to be anywhere near the rollover some people think we will be at the Olympics.

Yeah, anybody got a match report coming?

Well done boys! Fantastic effort all round (and as many have already said, a real confidence booster for the team!)

Game got a bit ugly at times, the Chileans tended to lose their tempers pretty quickly, but was a good game overall.

Does anyone know if the Aussie games are going to be broadcast? Apparently it's going to be double-headers with the NZ women's team too so it would be nice if (for once) TVNZ or SKY or CH3 covered the matches. Can we put some pressure on the media to get the games broadcast??

Oly_Whites certainly deserved it.

Chile looked good early on, played the ball out from very deep from the back in 3-5-2 formation, and had several very quick and skilful forwards.

The biggest worry for me through the game was the way Chile attackers equalled or outnumbered White defenders time and time again. The ball often was never realised to these strikers, but Chile pushed numbers up to join the strikers very quickly, and the White midfield didnt pick them up.

Chile must have a dozen decent efforts that were close, but all skimmed over the bar harmlessly. All these efforts were from penalty box or further out.

Now Ive given Ellensohn a bad press before in the Team Wellington forum, but I thought he had a much better game tonight, played a deeper role on the left and I much preferred him there than when Ive seen him try and lead the attack.

He scored the goal with a deep far post header from a free kick, but should have scored one earlier when he was put clear through, but hit it with his favoured left foot when the right foot would surely have seen a goal.

Chile then had a man sent off for 2 yellows ,a nd their gamemanship got worse and worse - harassing the referee, holding and kicking back,, and verbal tirades. The ref must have collected a full set of yellow cards, and got another red later on when a Chilean player did something when the ball was dead, probably swore at the ref.

Sportmanship was not on the agenda for Chile, and they blatantly dived a few times, including once the box near the end that was definitely not a penalty.

Overall I though the ref did well in very trying circumstances. The Oly Whites were no angels either and mixed it a few times too, and with the slippery pitch, there were a hell of a lot of fouls given.

An entertaining game in difficult conditions, which probably helped NZ rather than Chile.

The second red involved the ref and the player and Brockie.  I'm not sure if the player gave Brockie a slap in front of the referees nose or if he in fact hit or touched the referee in a threatening manner.

Quite frankly they were a disgrace, after Wednesdays game I thought it was pretty good spirits but they were lucky not to lose more than two this evening.  I was pretty impressed with the NZ lads for keeping cool as it exploded around them, Ellensohn in particular would have been justified in losing it when he was subbed and chased off by a Chilean player.

Even Ian Hogg who doesn't have a reputation for calmness was admirable until the final whistle.

After the Chileans had sung their anthem so well I said out loud "whats the chances of any of us knowing the words to ours?". Bloke next to me , in an Everton beanie, then sung them in Maori. Big up to him!
Profile pic. Should you be interested. Lakhsen, on the right, lost touch with him.
Mohammed, on the left, I'm still in touch with. He's now living in Agadez, Niger. More focused on his animals now as tourism has dried up. Is active with a co-op promoting local goods, leather work and bijouterie, into Europe.

I got the distinct impression that the Chileans were angry they were losing to New Zealand and decided to blame anyone but themselves for getting outplayed.

Amazing result! I think the team have a match against the Mariners before they head to Beijing, from what I could see on the official Mariners site?

We are playing CCM and the under 23 Australian team in Australia, then going to Indonesia and playing two club teams there and their national team (I'm not sure if it's their Under-23 side or full national side) before going to Beijing for the Olympics.  Nelsen is joining up with the squad in China, I don't know about Elliot and Killen though.

Sounds like a pretty good warm-up tour to me.

Our women's team is playing the Australian women's team in Aussie as well.

Certainly great stuff in what could be a crucial turning point in peoples attention focusing on NZ Football at grass roots, and hopefully some of our guys might even get noticed by decent overseas teams.
It is also great for getting football known on the global stage, which is where we could be when we play the 5th placed Asian seed we got a real chance at another massive competition.
