It is going to be a f**king terrible game with these conditions.

Would it be frowned upon if I bought along a text book to study from at half time? Was tossing up between the footy and some quality study, and decided to combine the two... though I think the footy may come out on top really

I was going to take a book but it might be a bit wet for it.

There's a roof on the stand right? My book has been dropped in a puddle many times over, so it doesn't make too much difference. Getting books wet makes them look more read, and by inference, the person holding the book more learned.

Yes but the book I'm reading is an old copy of Brave New World and Brave New World Revisited, it's already falling apart and Im not sure if my friend will be impressed if i give back to her waterlogged. Maybe I'll just take a FFT.

0-0 after 20 or so. Draper and Costa not playing (and maybe not named in the squad?) Apparently game so far is pretty close, however the Chilleans look pretty classy. Will try keep you updated (with much reliance on bopman, christie#1 and Paulinho...)

Scrub that, 1-0 Chile after 30ish.

One nil Chile. Their right winger is good. We've had more shots but too many from too far out

Still 2-1, Henderson bicycle just saved by Chilean keeper.

Weather looks to have eased off in town here. Must have been shocking playing in it. Apparently the pitch is stuffed

Final score 2-1 to the Chillies. Could have gone either way. Hinged on keeper error.

Who was the back four then?
scott, boxall, old, mathews?

                      little(?)
          scott   old   boxhall hogg
    jenkins    van rooyen peverly henderson
               brockie ellehnson

messam, draper, matthews and fowler came on.(edit-and tinkler)

was an alright game.goalie made the one error but made a few good saves afterwards.bit of a shame.
the chileans would of destroyed us on a dry pitch! their right wing/back was pretty good.
one thing that stood out was the speed that they switched the ball and whipped in crosses.
for nz, draper looked sharp when he came on, and cole and van rooyen worked hard in the middle.old played well after a few early stuff ups
shame about the weather and newtown is stuffed now!

how did the full backs play against the quick chilean wingers/ was scott capt still - hope so i rate him
Permalink Permalink

scott was still captain yeah..he played pretty solid to.
on the left hogg let them get behind a couple of times, but otherwise got stuck in and also looked alright.
the main threat from the chileans came down the right.he was a class above, whipped in some great balls in the first half.

be interesting too see how they accomodate nelson really .... wonder where that change will happen

As was said earlier it would have been a bigger scoreline if it had been dry.

I can't understand how our guys who are for the most part big boys keep getting knocked off the ball by guys half their size. We had some good counter attacks but our marking and reading of the game is poor.

The team will really have to step up if they want to get anything out of the Olympics

A lot of doom and gloom, I thought Old and Boxall played very well against players of a speed and style that would normally cause them problems.  The right winger was superb, the second goal a disaster.

If Henderson's bicycle kick hadn't earned a superb save or his long wide shot had been an inch lower it could have easily been a deserved draw.

How's my driving? - Whine here

Yeah i thought the boys looked good. especially in the second half. was sitting with a mate who is in the u20s who is down training with the u23s and he was telling me draper and costa havent made the final squad. suprised me because i thought draper looked very good when he came on.

good to see a decent crowd down their as well as cleberson.

would be a mistake to leave out draper i feel. agree with news, though boxhall and old looked pretty good.a few moments of miscommunication but otherwise dealt well with some sharp play.

Didn't see clebo, good to know he's out and about. There was a bunch of kids running round saying that smeltz was there as well. Olywhites had a few moments but couldn't match the chilean passing and possesion (ole!)

Costa wasn't on the team sheet but I remember a pretty nifty turn by draper.

The pitch is completely screwed and that was definately holding the chile boys back, that and the fact that they kept getting caught offside were the main reasons we wern't thrashed
You know we belong together...

Damnit, thought I had the scoop there... Was chatting with Draper's mum who was sitting behind me... she said they were told this morning taht they didn't make the squad. Shame that, I thought in his fifteen minutes or so he held the ball well, didn't rush his passes, but perhaps was pushed off the ball a little easily at times. Get a few pies in him and it could be a sign of bigger things to come this season hopefully! Leeds_Chris2008-07-02 18:26:27

Thought it was a really good match - although a draw would have been a better reflection of the game. Terrible conditions (weather and pitch).

I hear the official squad has been named (but isn't being officially released until tomorrow!)

Well done lads - looking forward to Friday!

Never did I think I would see a south American keeper forced to make a save from a NZer's bicycle kick.

haha sorry mate. could sam messam have a bigger upper body if he tried? and then pins below the waist, thought he looked good when he first came on and drifted out of it a bit. thought brockie had his moments. other interesting bit of goss i got was that pelter has come back from england overweight and unfit. being forced into extra fitness work
