I still don't get it.  Why would the NZOC decision makers deny us a place in the most popular Olympic comp???    I blame the Telferites...

It's a matter of money. The NZOC has very little money compared to other olympic committees and it's hard to justify sending an athlete(s) that won't be competitive. Belive me, they hate to do it but they sometimes HAVE to.

because they only send teams/individuals who have a chance who have a chnce of winning a medal/or developing.
will sending this team to the olympics develop im not sure.
let the officals from nz soccer/olympic commitee decide i guess.

The whiteys showed their mighty power over the Solos by making them eat the dirt on the pitch.
Reading those kinds of comments make following the games that much more enjoyable.

So am I right in thinking we won 2-0, Solomons finished with 8 on the field (!?) and we finished with 11 on the field?

Old to move to the Phoenix front line and Siggy signed in defence?

they finished with 9 (text commentator got it wrong then recanted), we had 11 at the end

and yes 2-0 to the O-whites

Beijing for us, if there is any justice!!

Good news for the Oly-Whites.

We shouldn't have trouble against the Cooks, and if we do then we don't deserve to go to Beijing

Don't count our chickens yet.

From the NZPA "they would then require selection ratification from the New Zealand Olympic Committee to represent the Oceania region at the Games in Beijing in August".

It would not surprise me in the least to get knocked back by the NZOC.

I think we're getting a little bit paranoid aren't we???  A 15 team comp is hardly desirable.  The Oly-whites can smell the rice paddies already!!!!!

Any concerns:  office@olympic.org.nz

I wouldn't put it past them if FIFA has anything to do with it.

Three for me, and two for them.

Sounds bad.

The Olympic don't start until 8th August and so allowing a week early for some events that may start before the 8th. Any withdraws would be done by 1st July. Plenty of time for them to figure it out.

The Olympic selections would be hard pushed to reject the Olywhites team, once they finish the Cook Islanders. Straight wins are what counts and how smart they conducted their tournament strategy not just number of goals scored.

FIFA does handle the Olympic football so, the OFC will have some funding for the Oceania Reps.

Its not a financial decision, its one of credibility.  But in team sports, by qualifying you have shown that you are better than however many other teams in the world.  Individula sports are different, you can meet the qualifying standard but that might be so low as to be almost meaningless (as weve witnessed with several african swimmers etc).  They must be allowed to go, it would be as big a disgrace as the Fijian Visa fiasco if the didnt.  I fully support tigers idea about beginning the pressurising now, letters to the ed, get the journos onside and they wont have a choice.  Public opinion can easily sway them, make it an issues and the ollywhites a cause!

Gotta agree with Mr Dean. A little positive publicity from the footballing public won't do the olywhites any harm.

Have you ever spoken to a member of the Olympic committee on the subject? If the money was avaliable they would send everyone that qualifies. The object of the Olympics is participation, rather than the popular misconception that it is about winning. If it was about winning the IOC wouldn't actualy be encouraging (and helping finance I think) African swimmers and the like.

Competetiveness is simply the most acceptable answer to the problem, think how angry the public would be if uncompetitive athletes were sent instead?

I would love to see the Oly-Whites at the Olympics and yes we do need to apply pressure to make sure they go.

Do the olympics still allow 3 over age players?  If so when we throw Nelsen, Killen and Elliot into our team we look ok to compete.

As I understand a copy of the Dan keat/Spenser Noal video obtained from Fiji TV was sent to FIFA as an mpg and the FIFA Disciplinary Committee made its decision accordingly.

My personal view - if I can share it - is that if you measure a red card by, say, the Beckham incident at the FIFA World Cup - France 98, then any type of "clash" is going to draw attention from a referee.

That's more likely to escape unpunished in, say, Northern League. The NZFC is similar. If there is a competition on earth where you will likely get away with it, its the A-League.

But like British teams in Europe, they must adapt. Simply playing a certain way in another competition is no justification for taking that same approach in a different competition, different environment.

It is simply not worth retalitating.

Spenser Noal was suspended for two matches and fined 2000 CHF for serious foul play.

What a insult to the Olly-whites, As if u would put Elliot and Killen in the team? Even old man Nelsen wouldnt handle the fast pace of Olympic football.

I'd put Nelsen in the team, but I wouldn't put in Elliot and I don't know about Killen either.  If Killen was on form then yes, otherwise I'd give Smeltz his place, and I'd give Sigmund or Brown Elliot's place.
