Note that for the record I don't like Christchurch much as a city but it's the only obvious South Island venue for this.

The pair of us should just shut our gobs and move to Wellington then!

I'll travel to Wellington. I'd travel to Christchurch. But I can't work out Auckland. Seriously the place scares the hell out of me. I am going up there in October for a CBD event but going there for a sporting event? Scary.

I think if it is played in Auckland, Hamilton or Chch. They will get big crowds no matter what.

I live in CHCH and hope to hell it is here. However to think we would get anywhere near a sell-out is just pie in the sky AMI.

Anyone know when they are going to announce where the game is going to be played?

No matter who gets the Honduras game (Auckland please) that region will have a point to prove for any future WC playoffs. If Chch or Auckland f**ks up this time then they can forget about hosting a playoff there in 4 years time.

the honduras game will sell like crazy wherever - its a saturday night and everyone outside of wellington is both gagging for AWs and starved of football

Honduras for the football capital of NZ please!

You don't see England playing a game at Wembley then playing a game at Old Trafford.

yeah, the country that convincingly knocked them out of the world cup share their team around the country as should we.  and i think people here quite liked when wembley was being built and england played old trafford/st james park/upton park - and also, england is smaller than NZ, manchester to wembley is little over 2 hours by train.

don't think it matters where this is played, as long as the next games are played wherever these ones aren't.  i think maybe save auckland for when we can sell out a 65,000 capacity eden park!!  Hamilton sounds good, but think probably in this case having one on each island is fair.....

if fairness is at all a factor, a third of the country live in Auckland. Way more people than live in the entire South Island. If you're worried about people "missing out" - surely this is a massive factor.

Auckland has had some terribly mismanaged football events tarnish its reputation. If Auckland had been given that well promoted, fortunately timed Nix game last year, we'd probably all be hailing the city as football's second home.

So come on NZF, give us another chance. Auckland: We're not Auckland anymore.

OMG, is this possibly the worst opinion piece ever?

I can't believe how out of touch this guy is. If anything, NZF have hedged their bets nicely by giving Wellington the sucky Tuesday night slot (which should still go pretty well) while the prime Saturday slot will go to some other lucky town.

Tbh i don't see too much wrong there. I think having the two games in Auckland (or poss Hamilton) and Chch would be a better move.

Three for me, and two for them.

I don't agree with what he said about the Kingz but i do agree that both games outside of Welly would of been a good idea.

Is that hard to understand or should i translate it to a different language for you lot?

Three for me, and two for them.

Last time the All Whites played in Christchurch (and indeed the South Island) was 2006 against Malaysia. Since then, the All Whites have played Malaysia (2006, where they drew ~2000 less than in Chch), New Caledonia (2008) and the NZFC All-Stars. As well as every age grade and womens tournament, and two of the three U17 WWC matches involving NZ (Wellington hosting the other). If anyone has been missing out on NZ representative football, it's Christchurch. Any Aucklander who complains about missing out on seeing the All Whites should consider whether they have had the chance to see them in the last three years, then consider whether or not Mainlanders have had that chance.

I've no doubt Auckland would do a good job of hosting it, but I don't feel they deserve it more. That being said, Auckland works out far better for me than Chch so part of me hopes it goes up north

It's just a bus trip from Britomart. NHS is one of the best stadiums in the country and there are some bloody good football people up there. Although I'd rather knaw my arm off than have to live there, I'd gladly head up to Auckland for a match.

Really stirred up a hornets.  Chch stadium is not avaliable for the Paraguay game. Then David Long goes into total inaccuracies and stats. A jurno with a chip on his auckland shoulder. Get a grip you.

Wellington made sense. Chch is booked for the 12th. Eden Park isnt finished and doesnt have the capacity at present, so other than Wgtn you are looking at Hamilton and North Harbour. Take the big crowd in Wgtn and fill your coffers a bit.

Whether its para or Honduras isnt significant (people are coming to see the AWs) but whether its Saturday or Tuesday is (Saturday is far more attractive).

He's generated over 150 comments in an hour and half though. Great traffic for the Stuff site!

Some of the comments are pretty funny - the usual parochial bullsh*t.

You know, I object to his generalisation that it is skinny white middle class kids that play the game.

The middle class ones can be quite chubby.

(but there are lots of shades of brown, a few working class even in Wharfies K-Town [what an oxymoron], and lots of different body shapes)

Indeed.

Junior News plays for a (United Nations) side with:

2 Samoans
2 Maoris
2 Indians
3 Africans (all from different nations)
1 Chinese
1 English
1 Egyptian
1 NZ European
1 Chubby middle class NZ European

Chances the game being played in this location vs that location in New Zealand impacts on if they play ?  None.

Incidentally what does Mr. Long normally write about.  Is he just a general sports writer for the Sunday News ?

The general thrust of his argument is sound but in practical terms there was really no other choice for the Paraguay game.
I wonder if I can afford dinner at Logan Browns??

He mostly writes about rugby for Stuff, and yes The Sunday News seems to be his "home" newspaper.

Go figure. It must be a slow week so he's slumming it writing crap about poofball.

No it isn't. He states that "Of all the places in the country Wellington is the worst possible city to host this game". According to him Wellington is not even "not the best option", it's "the worst".

Really? Worse than Invercargill? Worse than Palmerston North? Hey, let's all try and get to Gisborne on a Tuesday f**king night. That's clearly a better option than Wellington.

Is there a prize for guessing which one is Junior News?

And, incidentally, isn't Egypt in Africa?

I can't see how they can argue about the need for a match in Dorkland based on population.
They have shown they don't turn up and support in large numbers. Football & Rugby matches have shown that.

To be fair it would be good to see an AW game in the South Island.
