They wont care, yeah it was a great game...but tell me how many thousands of people in Nz watched it on sky or would have watched it even if it was on TVNZ?
If we build it, they will come...
Who would imagine that Lippi has to call on Luca Toni, Vincenzo Iaquinta, Riccardo Montolivo and Mauro Camoranesi to sub in.
Yeah, but they will for the Confederation Cup after this.
And "The crowd Goes Wild" Prime TV show has to have plenty of Sky footage for the news. Looking forward to their comments tonight.
TVNZ loses out on a nearly historical sporting event. But thats their call. So glad that SkyTV made it live. I am sure football fans anticipate this and hats off to NZfootball for the push to get it on.
No we would have won. Most of their goals came from that weak point on the Right Back.
I have to say that hopefully this has envigorated Vicelich to stick around for the World Cup qualifier, because we need him. Here's hoping for the good confederation cup.
Bit harsh on Mulligan, the last two Italian goals were down to Brown.
All Aboard the Phoenix/ All Whites Bandwagon!!
Aside from the three goals scored between them, how did the actual partnership between Killen and Smeltz look? Did they link up well?
Just got off the plane... I'm so gutted I missed this match. This has to be one of the greatest (if not the greatest) All Whites performances of all time. Unbelievable!
jamesnz2009-06-11 09:57:21Mulligan- 5.0: The full-back went AWOL for both of Gilardino's goals, allowing the man he was marking, Quagliarella, to provide two assists.
Vicelich- 4.5: Started well, but then struggled, and was skinned for Gilardino's opener
Boyens- 4.5: Like Vicelich, he had a sound opening 25 minutes before he toiled against Gilardino, and later Iaquinta.
Lochead- 5.5: Comfortably dealt with Pepe one-on-one, but cannot expect a high mark in a defence that concedes four goals.
We led 3 times, they only led once

Too low if Brown got a 7. He was a machine and must have got the ball a thousand times, always seemed to be near the play and available, plus knocked some quality passes
So what did they say about the match again?

Anyway a slight change in the defence for the Spain game? I would have Christie on the right back over Mulligan again because of the backtracking. Sigmund over Boyens for slightly better positional play, but fitness is a worry with Sigmund. Not sure Olds is up to it. Sigmund may even take Vicelich place next to Boyens. All I can say is that only Lochead is safe at left back. Quality overall work. Our best back in the game.
Still feel we haven't quite got the centre defence combo fitted, but they were solid on occasions. Just was caught napping a few times.
The quality that NZ displayed? Their clean, multidirectional and accurate pass selection made a difference to the ball serve to the strikers despite having an inferior possession%. Team formation shape in general play was at a higher level than I have seen.
I really think we can match Spain in the midfield now as they tend to leave the midfield open so we can attack through the centre of the field. Midfield centre defence has been correct most of the time. It's their midfield/wingers, that I am worried about. . . .
Oh and kudos to Simon Elliot in the defensive midfield, solid hard work much need. I hope he does not get injured. Brown put in the hard work also as well. Looking very good central midfield combo.
Yeah but he clearly called for it, so no one moved. Killen pounced.
He could do nothing about the first goal
So what did they say about the match again?
Italy will win easily and show some decent football, but they will not try to humiliate their opponents too much.
Italy-New Zealand 4-0
If so, it further shows how well the All Whites did.

simply outstanding to play Italy for the frist time and to score 3 goals against them when they only average half a goal a game.
F*****G BRILLIANT !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Italy v NI: Marchetti, Santon, Gamberini, Legrottaglie, Grosso, D'Agostino, Gattuso, Montolivo, Mascara, Pazzini, Rossi.
Of course it's the keeper's fault. If he comes out to claim, the defenders leave a bot of space for him to do so, otherwise you're asking for trouble (i.e. collision with defender, dropped ball -> goal). So the defenders leave that space open, but Killen runs into it and heads in because the keeper misjudged the flight of the ball and tried to claim it too late.
If he stays on the line, in theory that space in front of goal should be closed, thus not allowing an easy run in for an unopposed header on goal, therefore a much more difficult chance to score from. Now we're getting into the could/should/may have been territory, but the fundamenatal reason why that goal went in was the keeper's decision-making and positioning.
Gotta love those translations
3 ' BALANCING Of ITALY! According to assist of Quagliarella, Gilardino detaches of head and replaces the result in parity: 2-2.

Another great moment:
22 ' Italy too much distracted in defense: Smeltz is useful for a svarione and grazes the doubling from the limit of the area with a conclusion that grazes the pole to the left of Amelia

Interesting doing your own translations
Svarione = blunder
Conclusion = finish
pole = post
doubling = legs?

Amelia was dreadful. I don't think the first goal can be blamed on him, but the second two certainly can. Despite the fact there was only one goal between the sides you could see how much of a classier side the Italians were. They moved the ball around a lot faster, while you could see the NZ players took ages to turn around/control/look up and pass.
On Stuff.co.nz it said the crowd was 10 000. Rubbish. The commentators said it was about 1 500 and that's what it looked like as well.
Herbert can rightly be proud of the chaps. This is a victory in my books. Hopefully we can slaughter Iraq and South Africa.
As somebody said earlier, Italy didn't have their full squad but neither did we. And to answer someones question, the last time we scored three times against non-Oceanic opposition was in our 3-1 win over Georgia.
