New Zealand won 1-0 with Bahrain. New Zealand played in the first play-off without Australia which had moved to Asia and New Zealand was lucky to beat Bahrain with a penalty save from Paston.

Well we should have lost that first leg 4  nil.

And the score was? We deserved our place at the WC and did it by beating Bahrain. "That's why they play the games....."

Yes but we were lucky to have got a 0-0 draw.

Can't seem to see mention of it on the OFC or NZF sites but has anyone heard about us getting Asian refs for the last two round robin games after the debacle in Tahiti and Chch?

Clearly they do that's why Moss was suspended last time around. That's a rubbish call from OFC, wiping the cards at the end of the 1st qualifying round for a single nation who was never going to make it anyway.

Suspensions carry over, but I expect cards will not.

I heard him (tai Nicholas) say it on radio sport, might have been an interview with Telfer. Mentioned japanese and Australian in particular

Hope we don't get Ben Williams, only Aussie ref that could give the OFC ones a run for their money.

I would be extremely happy if we got Strebre.

Is O'Leary really our best - thought Hester would be ahead of him - in fact my Mum is probably better than O'Leary.

Wouldn't mind a Japanese ref, too.  From what I've seen, with them, you only have to look at the opposition - and you get booked.
*Famously, the first game of soccer that Murray actually "woke up for" .  But he only watched the 2nd half though.   Thus, basically, he just "woke up" at his normal Sunday morning time.

Hester retired from all football circa end of 2011.

Good point I didn't think of it that way. Given that this is a play-off, is FIFA in charge of that decision or a joint OFC/CONCACAF thing? I suspect it would be more of a disadvantage to the CONCACAF nation due that they have more qualification games and more chances to pick up cards than us. Interesting...

But also more chances to get suspensions out of the way before the play-off.

In fact, it's locked in now, the hexagonal draw was announced today, and as widely expected, the last two rounds are in the October window, so the November dates are the only time the play-off can be played.

Has there been any word on where the All Whites vs New Caledonia game will be played?

I think it will be at the Westpac Stadium because Nix are playing the Jets there on the 23rd March.

I think that Costa Rica will be in the top three. More likely Honduras.

Hardly any different from us trying to get Durante, although he has not played for Oz

In a competitive fixture too! I was going to write this on that page and then I realised that I couldn't be bothered with feeding the troll.

It's just a flattering joke. I don't get why people get worked up about this. Same as with the Olympics and the Australasia gag.

Permalink Permalink

Who is getting worked up?

Though yeah people getting worked up over the Olympics gag was actually embarrassing.

Just as a side issue, is it worth looking at Durante as a central midfielder for the All Whites? It seems a bit of a cludge but we are really struggling there.

I haven't seen Durante play as a C/DM but honestly, I don't think I'd want to. He is a very solid CB and will fill in for Nelsen well when his time comes (assuming that's not too far away).

What makes you think that he will give up his Oz heritage  to become a 'kiwi'?

Nothing. It was suggested 'is it worth looking into him as a central midfielder' and he replied to say if we were to look into him for anything, it'd be in defence.

It's just being discussed as a possibility.

An opportunity to go to the World Cup?

Even just the oppourtunity to play International Football would be tempting.

I must I had that same thought re Durante in the middle of the field as I was reading down the page.

In a lot of respects, Ivans day job is as a defender yet he plays internationally as a DM. Manny has converted to being a DM. If you looked at Durante v Ivan, are they that different in skill set? The only difference is tactical positioning which Ivan already had playing as a midfielder previously. Durante is a smart guy and would be an upgrade in terms of pace and mobility. Whether he could learn it on the fly (and where would he for another point)

Admittedly the above is pie in the sky but its not as far a reach if people wanted to explore it. Hey we looked at Killen in the midfield... As El grap said in another thread, that is the most glaring hole in our team and with Wee Mac sure to start and Keat/Payne not exactly grabbing the chance, a retired/injured Elliott is still out best option. Oh for Tim Brown.

Grumpy old bastard alert

Tim brown is not a DM. Moving forward I think Payne is the likely candidate after his performances in the olympics
