Very interesting.  I hope the FIFA website would put out only official information, but by the sounds of what is being said here, the order the balls were drawn is causing some confusion.

Based purely on the latest FIFA rankings (whichmay bear very little resemblance to who will eventually end up in these playoffs but gives you an idea), this is who New Zealand might face...

Sixth-placed South American side: Paraguay (World ranking 26)

Fourth-placed CONCACAF side: Honduras (World ranking 51)

Fifth-placed Asian side: China (World ranking 73)

columbia is actually the 6th placed South American side, which wouldnt be that bad really.

still concaf would probably be better thoughdetoxin2011-07-31 07:28:06

Columbia are currently ranked 7th in South America.

The side that goes to the playoff is the fifth-placed side once you take Brazil out, so in effect, the sixth placed side, which is currently Paraguay.

Either way, I'm glad we're nowhere hear that confederation in these playoffs!

So, potentially: Jamica, Kosta Rica, Honduras, Cuba, Canada.Azevo2011-07-31 09:03:33

So we're probably looking at the likes of Honduras/Jamaica/T&T/El Salvador. Not bad at all.

Kosta Rica is usually the third best team in CONCACAF (they lost the third spot last time around by conceding in stoppage time of the last game), so they're probably favourites to nab the third spot. Hope they do, they'd easily be the most difficult play-off opponent out of all the possible options.

Suppose Panama should be added to the potentially playing list..

That's good, Asia would obviously have been prize number one, but I'll take this one.

I guess we had better start arranging some friendlies against this lot

Nah, think this is the best draw - we got lucky in Asia last time, no guarantees that would happen again. All we need is Kosta Rica to do their business and get third, and everyone else is very beatable.

When doing draws for groups, the pots are *filled* as the teams come out. I expect that format being used for "two team groups" is what created the confusion - but I haven't checked the draw regs to know for sure.

WE really can't complain with the draw - either way, we it was going to be tough getting to the WC, so CONCAF is still much better than South America. This means we NEED to get some games under our belt against these North American teams (esp. the Island Nations) to find out first hand how they play their fooball

Honestly, I think it will be tough. I watched most of the Gold Cup games. Right now I believe Mexico, USA, Kosta Rica, Honduras, Panama, Guatemala, El Salvador and Jamaica would all beat the All Whites. Canada would be a toss-up. Don't know about T&T because they weren't in the Gold Cup.

Everything Kosta gets changed to a K by default. Same with Nels_on the city get's changed to Nelsen the player, and swearing gets a * in the middle.

Definitely will be tough, but I'm sure the All Whites would have a chance against a few of those teams you mention.
