JUST DO IT: Coach Ricki Herbert, top left inset, looks on as the All Whites train for the return match against Mexico at Porirua Park yesterday.

Hopefully that's just lazy journalism and Ricki's got something better in his training locker than rondo (even though it is a good warm-up drill).

its Andy Murray. They bought him in because he knows how to clinch major matches..... and he will cry if we win or lose.

is it to much to dream of a win here? even if it doesnt get us to the world cup?

Id love to see ricki sign off his time in charge with a win, for himself as a servant to nz football and to the legends who have played in his team who didnt get a send off on home soil(elliot, nelson, ivan)

If it was a one off game i'd fancy the all whites to take it out with a narrow win, as it isn't, I can see the AW's taking an early lead, 1-0 at half time but getting beat in the end as the Mexicans pick off the gaps with the AW's chasing the magic 4 goals.  a late consolation goal pulls it back to 3-2 mexico at FT.

What's he going to say with his kid up front - "No we can't" ????

If he says that, he has Rory on the phone going 'Dad do you not believe in me?"

He was harking back to the Saudi 5-0 result in Riyadh in '82. Overlooking Sumner's comment about the two Saudi central defenders out on cards (their two best players) and their goalkeeper being absolute shite.

Can we crock Mexico's two CB's nice and early please? Plus their keeper. Get those elbows swinging, Rory son!

I just keep imagining their keeping coming out to sweep up, taking out Rojas getting carded and we get a penalty in the first 5 mins.

From there its on.

Of course, it's unlikely and I'd just take an improved performance even if it's  a draw.
But I'd written-off the Black Caps in the second ODI v Sri Lanka last week with an inexperienced team of no great pedigree, and having my feeling we wouldn't come close to winning confirmed almost to the end, I watched in disbelief, as needing an unlikely 20 runs off the last over, the Black Caps pulled off one of the greatest last overs in NZ ODI history to score 25 !!! It was nerve-wracking to the last ball, when needing one to win it, Nathan McCullum blasted a six. He smashed 22 from the last four balls.
They've drawn the ODI series v the much tougher Sri Lanka after failing to win any matches v Bangladesh (except a T20).
(Nathan McCullum is a former NZ u-23 football international and Otago national league player who concentrated on football early in his career; golden boot Southern League, Caversham 1999 - 19 goals)

I remember him being in squads around 1999- 2000 but he didn't play any full internationals, only friendlies I think. Boy, did he have pace when he was a young striker! I rate him as one of the best young NZ strikers of that period. Cricket maybe was his second choice:

Sounds that way in this interesting interview with him here:

http://www.espncricinfo.com/magazine/content/story/556982.html

His other career choice was fairly impractical, but one driven by passion. "I love football. I was probably a better football player than I was a cricket player," he says. A one-time holder of the golden boot for South Premier League club Caversham AFC, with 19 goals in a season, McCullum was a prolific striker.

He considered turning it into a full-time gig but knew that would require a life-changing move. "If I was going to try football, I had to take the plunge and move to the UK when I was 17 or 18. At that time I wasn't quite ready to do that. I wasn't mature enough and I wasn't really sure that that's what I wanted to do. Then I started to earn a little bit of money from cricket with Otago and that forged the way for what I was going to do."

McCullum ultimately chose cricket over football, but not without a tinge of regret. "The more I watch football, the more it makes me want to play. I've got mates who play for Otago, and when I go watch them I just want to play, so I don't really even watch now."

He was a pretty handy striker, very quick, played a bit of national league for Cavvy. Brendan was a decent left back from memory.

Oram = NZ u-20 international mid-nineties
Has been mentioned on other threads yonks ago.
Many Black Caps over the years have been talented footballers e.g. Mark Burgess a 50 test cricketer & NZ u-23 international & All Whites squad member ; Richard Hadlee = Chch Rangers goalkeeper 1970's Southern League; Craig McMillan & Nathan Astle were Canterbury age group reps.

How much behind the scenes pressure is on the Stubborn One to play Roux, Tuiloma and Siggy rather than Lochhead and Durante? I hope an awful lot. I'd throw Smeltz up front for Brockie too. But don't put it past Ricki to dig his heels in again, despite all the obvious. I wouldn't be surprised if Lochhead, Durante, Butler, Christie all take the field.
