            Moss

Roux    Siggy     Smith     Tullimoa

 James    WeeMac    Henderson

Rojas      Smeltz       Costa

Terrible lineup defensively but we wont score 7 otherwise....

And lets be honest, when we did pressure Mexico they looked pretty suspect at the back.

Myself, I've given up on the world cup, and am just looking forward to watching the AWs play a top international side (even if it is one not in the best form) in Wgtn. So I'd still prefer Ricki to put out the best side that he thinks can actually make a game of it, rather than try to get 4 goals from the outset and get slaughtered. I'm also assuming he'll keep the back 3 (/5) so will go for:

                    Moss
Roux  Siggy Dura Smith  Lochhead

         James  McGlinchey

      Rojas Smeltz Costa

Anybody know if there's anything planned in the stadium before the game? Not that the 'stars of '82' are likely to be wheeled out again... but 35,000 are there trapped and waiting...

Would we be happy with a win by a single goal? That's what I'm hoping happens. Huge, huge long shot. But we are at home. It COULD happen.

With changes being forced, we might actually be able to put some pressure on Mexico.

Did not really rate their defence (not that we gave them a lot to do) Wellington should be a completely different ball game.

What if we beat Mexico and Ricki resigns another 4 year contract? As sad as it is to admit, it would almost be better for NZF is we lost again in Wellington so we can just get rid of Herbert. He's done well but he needs to acknowledge that his time is up. Thank you Ricki but it's time. We need a new coach who can develop the future of NZF. There is no point in ever playing Vicelich, Bertos, Lochhead, Butler, Clapham, Christie and perhaps a couple more players again for New Zealand. They will never be professional players and it is better to look at other options. Eg. James, Tuiloma, Roux, Howieson, Keat, Payne, Fitzgerald. It is a risk to go with this second lot of players as they are all young and unproven (except James), but I think it is the direction we need to head in, We need to take a risk with these guys and embrace and try and develop this talent. I'm not saying it will work at first and there will be players on that list that will prove to be not up to it, but these are the guys we need to look at. We need to start building for Russia 2018 or even Qatar 2022. Russia may be out of reach at this stage.

Would like to see Tuiloma for Bertos - has demonstrated ability to play as winger/wingback both locally, at NZ agegroup level and in Marseille, would add pace, a very good long throw and extra threat in the air to the squad.

And I don't buy into the 'unproven' argument. Has proven himself at agegroup WC level, plays week-in with the OM U19 squad - including in the UEFA Youth League (Youth equivalent of Champions League) against top U19 players from clubs such as Napoli, Borussia Dortmund and Arsenal, has also played for OM's Reserve Team and has recently started training with the OM First Team. You can't tell me that doesn't make him a better choice in the squad than an unattached player.

Remember 1980 - U2 were a hot young band, the Cure made a NINE concert tour of NZ, Toy Love split up, Piggy Mudoon was PM....

and Mexico went down 4-0 in Auckland - and it was Herbert's debut for NZ (and probably Wednesday will be his last as manager).

And we have to win 4-0 on Wednesday to make the World Cup! (or else win by any five goal margin)

Brazil, USA, Panama and South Korea were the only other countries to beat Mexico in 1980 (P:25 W:9  D:8 L:8):

NZ BEAT MEXICO 4-0

http://www.odt.co.nz/sport/football/277564/football-day-nz-beat-mexico-4-0

"...The result, at Auckland's Bill McKinlay Park in 1980, is widely acknowledged as the start of New Zealand's 1982 World Cup campaign. It was the first time Kevin Fallon was alongside coach John Adshead and also heralded a change in the makeup of the squad as Ricki Herbert, Grant Turner, Steve Wooddin, Keith McKay and John Hill made their debuts.

Turner and Wooddin made immediate impressions, getting on the scoresheet, and McKay was named man of the match as he buzzed around in customary style in the midfield.

The New Zealand Herald reported the next day it was a "glorious chapter in New Zealand soccer history'' and a "magnificent team effort''.

"New Zealand's standing in world soccer has rocketed following the victory,'' the Herald reported.

Captain Steve Sumner recalled this week a bizarre pre-game display did little for Mexico's chances.

"I remember lining up with those guys and when their names were announced each player would step out, do a little Mexican dance and then go, 'woohoo','' Sumner said.

"They all did it, they were that confident. This was 1980. You didn't do that sort of thing. You might stand there and, if you were lucky, raise your arm and wave to the crowd. After looking at these guys we couldn't wait for the whistle to go so we could get into them.''

Brian Turner opened the scoring in the fifth minute with a penalty and the All Whites led 3-0 at halftime as they pressured Mexico deep in their own half. Grant Turner scored the final goal with a glancing header..."

Excellent post Big Pete. The article says 5000 people watched the All Whites that night. It was a long time ago, but I recall a lot less people than that. The one thing I do remember clearly though, is the positivity and energy the team played with, they really took it the Mexicans. The same thing is needed on Wednesday. Being at sea-level should help.

Lochead and Christie are certainties.

I think Daniel is back in the country, so will probably be on the bench, maybe with Brown and Coveny
