Yeah, I like Fenton too.The skull bash against Sydney was excellent, but surely he is not going to play instead of Storm Roux?.If he plays in another position(not sure which that would be),then fine but not right back please

There won't be a penalty shoot out (or extra time for that matter) if the score is 4-1.
If the score is 4-1 to us at the end f the game (wont happen though), then it WILL go to extra time + penalties
It concerns me that players like Fenton are anywhere near the AW's

Play an attacking midfielder at right back with nil defensive coaching and after wonder why he doesn't perform? There is NO WAY I would expose such a promising player to that sort of situation. There are a number of teams in NZ - someone must be doing OK at RB. If not Ricki could introduce some class by doing it himself?
Wow the YF site has gone mental....people firing in new topics faster than Mexico scores against NZ...LOL Mods take control. Why doesn't everyone just post on this thread...the current one?
We have a host of family in Wellington for the game on Wednesday. They all want to see the teams training. Anyone know where/when they are having public sessions? Tried to find it on the NZF site but surprise, surprise..nothing
Can anyone help out?
What if we beat Mexico and Ricki resigns another 4 year contract? As sad as it is to admit, it would almost be better for NZF is we lost again in Wellington so we can just get rid of Herbert. He's done well but he needs to acknowledge that his time is up. Thank you Ricki but it's time. We need a new coach who can develop the future of NZF. There is no point in ever playing Vicelich, Bertos, Lochhead, Butler, Clapham, Christie and perhaps a couple more players again for New Zealand. They will never be professional players and it is better to look at other options. Eg. James, Tuiloma, Roux, Howieson, Keat, Payne, Fitzgerald. It is a risk to go with this second lot of players as they are all young and unproven (except James), but I think it is the direction we need to head in, We need to take a risk with these guys and embrace and try and develop this talent. I'm not saying it will work at first and there will be players on that list that will prove to be not up to it, but these are the guys we need to look at. We need to start building for Russia 2018 or even Qatar 2022. Russia may be out of reach at this stage.
If the NZ coach doesn’t select the professional players playing in a good professional league, ahead of the players playing in the ASBP then you have to question why? Even the socceroos rarely select players from their state sides, ahead of professional players.
A professional trains day in and day out and those playing in a good league, play against quality opposition week in and week out. A good professional League would be equal to or higher than the A-League level, but in saying that the socceroos select few players from the A-League, but we don’t have that luxury.
The risk of selecting the "second lot of players" to play for NZ, is a lot less riskier than selecting non- professionals or players past their prime, especially if these professional players are consistently starting for their teams. What professional team would continue to select a player, who they think would not be capable of helping them win the game? The sole focus of professional sides is to win! That's their bread and butter - fans don't want to watch a losing team and sponsors don't want to invest in losing teams. Professionals who are in leagues of a good standard and who consistently start for their teams, IMO should be the first players considered for the National side. I think prior to Herbert that’s how it used to be.
well if Bertos is out and Fenton has his place on a good day at Nix then it appears logical to me..even if he doesnt start or play.
A small town in Europe........looking to bounce straight back up....well that aint going to happen

Jesus we are in trouble if that the way we work
Fenton got dragged at half time in his last attempt at right back. I hope Ricki saw that!
Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet
:>)

Fenton needs to go back and fight for RM position. He's no RB or RB cover.
All Whites needed to bring in Fitzgerald or another defender to cover any injuries during game. What happens if Siggy or Dura or Smith go down. Tuiloma CB hmm
Throw Ricki's bullshit tactics out the window. At least score some goals...Please start Marco Rojas !!
Think Ricki really want to start Marco Rojas definitely but if he was match fit, from last game he seems not really match fit and it's his first game in 2-3 months only?
Norwich City supporter since 1992, New Zealand supporter since 2010 but without Rory Fallon's winning goal against Bahrain, I won't know about New Zealand Football.
Fenton would've been brought in as a utility, not as a starter. The only real reason I can see him being called up is the fact that he is already in Wellington and ready to go if needed. Only really see him being used with 15mins to go on either side of midfield, another grafter who will run his ass off.....just whether he does anything with it..
Very much doubt he'll get on though.
The problem is then that we play like we did when Marco came on- pass everything to him and wait. Cue three Mexican defenders swooping on him and us losing possession. But if we play through James and McGlinchey we can try and create opportunities for Marco in a bit of space, or use him as a decoy and play in Kosta or whoever is our centre forward
still no news on where training is?
All Whites at Poriria Park, not sure when. Mexico at Dave Farrington 11 a.m.

Defeatist? Moi? Get this.
Seven (7) of the Jordan team that were thrashed 0-5 at home by Uruguay have asked for and been given permission not to travel to Uruguay for the away leg.

There's been a lot of talk that even with the reported $5 million from the second leg TV rights NZF is still struggling financially - well there's a perfect solution. Until Mexico finally put this second leg to rest there is still niggling doubt. We still have a bit of leverage. Mexico not going to Brazil would cost Fifa/Brazil/WC hundreds of millions of $ from lost sponsorship, TV rights and ticket sales etc. Why don't we simply offer Mexico a deal. For a quiet $10 million in used notes in a brown envelope (Qatar will know how it's done) NZF will allow Ricki to pick his old favourites again and park the bus with a flat backline. He could even throw in Butler to partner Christie in the midfield. For added assurance Lochhead will be CB, Brockie LB, Fallon at RB and Durante to be the lone striker. Everyone must just kick the ball blindly up the field, passing to another AW will be prohibited as a waste of energy.
Bingo - NZF walk away with another drubbing but a total of $15 million richer. Frank, Fred and Ricki can keep their jobs with a little reshuffle and some poor sod will be brought in as a figurehead AW coach. The gravy train will continue.
It is okay guys because we simulated a game on Fifa last night. N.Z vs Mexico and we won the game one nil :D

Why was Fenton drafted in to the AW ahead of Michael?
I really don't understand why Michael has been left on the outer. He has great ability and I feel should have even been considered before Durante. IMO Durante was hopeless against Mexico and is not even that good for the Nix.
Michael has several years ahead of him and is someone who we could develop for the future.

Thought you must be a mate/relative but if that was the case you'd probably be able to spell his name correctly.
To answer your question (which should be in an AW's thread), Louis Fenton isn't there to cover CB.
It makes no sense calling in Fenton, there's already Roux and Tuiloma who can both adequately cover any position that Fenton would cover. However the options for CB cover are slim or non-existent.
Just because people make positive comments about players, who other people may not rate, does not mean the person posting is a relative or a friend. The National squad and the appointments at NZF might work that way, but that doesn't mean people posting on this forum work that way (although I'm sure there are some that do).
IMO Michael is a good young player that deserves to be considered for the future, he has a professional club, has represented NZ at age group level and was successful in the draft system in the US - all of that counts for something.
hahaha dont make me laugh, 7 goals? come on guys be objective, even without our goalie, you wouldnt score so many goals
So what has Ricki got against Ben Sigmund? He needs to get over it pronto. He didnt play him in South Africa and he could have done with his passion in Mexico.
Reid Smith and Nelsen were ahead of him in South Africa.
Clearly doesn't have something against him since he signed and consistently played him at the Phoenix (despite some poor performances at times).
Baffled as to why he didn't play CB against Mexico, with Vicelich in midfield.
has anyone heard how many mexicans fans will be here for the game?

It would have happened elsewhere, without doubt...
...but if the AW's turned up and bent over with that "peppered angus" approach to Wednesday night's game NZF would be paying out the $15 million dollars to cover the mayhem, murder, rioting, and Fifa fines resulting from the (un)civil unrest!!
There are plenty of experts more qualified than I to discuss the best approach tactically on these threads
It seems to me one or two early AW goals from an all-out assault on Mexico could have a huge unsettling effect on them.

NZF stands to Lose US$10+Million. Yes it will hurt us...... but NOTHING like what's at stake for those Mexican players and staff!!! Its serious shit and not over yet.
The pressure on each and every Mexican player will be overwhelming, especially if we could swing a bit of early momentum our way.
The AW's are here at home in a packed ROF, and each of us there has a job to do come Wednesday....
"One Billiion Dollars!! You're LOSING One Billing Dollars!! One Billion Dollars!!!......You're LOSING One BIllion Dollars!!!"
Yes unlikely, but then so was our qualification and results last time. At least give it a go.
OK I am over the angst of the Azteca.
We are back in Wellington now. We have a top rated international team in town to play the AW's in a WC playoff in a sell out stadium. That does not happen very often.
As a football fan I plan to get as much enjoyment as I can over the next few days. That includes going to any open trainings, bonding with any Mexican supporters in a non anal way, getting tanked before the match and generally soaking up the atmosphere.
As for the match, all I hope is the lads make us proud. Win draw or lose if we can walk out of the stadium and say that the AW's put in a decent shift then that will please me. I hope as supporters we make lots of noise and get into the game.
Any other football fans in town.....enjoy. Save the angst and analysis for later. It may be a long long time before you get a similar experiance.

Supporter For Ever - Keep The Faith - Foundation Member - Never Lets FAX Get In The Way Of A Good Yarn
Thank you Austin 10.....my thoughts exactly. I can't wait to be part of the excitement on Wednesday night!

Yep I too can't wait. The atmosphere will be electric if we score a goal or two. Let's get out and support the team, win, draw, lose, through thick and thin! The fair-weather band-wagoners may not show up but that doesn't matter! I have faith that we can win this second leg (Not the whole tie though) and HOPEFULLY Ricki comes to some sense and plays an exciting line up.
Coming up from Chch with a heapa mates. Can someone let me know the timetable for pubs? I see there is The Pub and The Backbencher, but what is the rough timetable for each?
I let my guitar speak for me
The plan is to kick off around 12pm at the Electric Ave, then the Kings, Pub and Bencher. Timetable? Pfft. We'll just stumble from one to the other and probably be at the stadium 6.59pm.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid
3-0 to us at half-time will be interesting, remember v Saudi Arabia '81 we led 5-0 @ Half-time....
