Where to Play the Qualifier

The Dom Post has kicked off debate where the AWs should play the home leg of their WC qualifier - http://www.stuff.co.nz/4847179a1823.html

Surely, when it comes to atmosphere, crowd numbers, playing surface Welly is a no-brainer.

Playing surface at North Harbour is arguably better ;-)

Got to be Wellington for me, but surely people are going to vote where they live?

Incredible stamina. No shame. Yellow Fever.

Then we shall argue......I believe the better surface is here at the Ring of Fire....

Most of the visiting A-League clubs have said its possibly the best in the league over the last two seasons.

If we are playing a random country no one has heard of. Im worried about crowd numbers, especially if its a midweek. Has to be advertised well.

Allegedly

I agree. I don't think it would be hard to advertise - Smeltz, Nelsen, Bertos, Sigmund, Killen, Elliot etsc - 2wins from making it to the world cup. Make it a big deal and people will get it

I'd not mind a road trip to auckland with my son,

but

Welly = decent crowd,
+ a crowd who will have a decent core of football fans who can make a bit of noise

and a fair reward for the city that has raised the profile of football to it's highest level since '82!!

Tigers, once the selection process and timeframes are clearer (responsibility for which sits with NZF), i think that question will be easier to answer. Needless to say, one of the strengths of a Wellington bid and campaign will be the solidarity and passion of the Welly football community - and YF at the heart of that. We need to consider how that's most effectively applied. Open to ideas at this point. Ill give you a ring some time anyway.

PS - assuming John doesntly completely disagree with all that.

does anyone know when the schedule will be announed?
Permalink Permalink

Below is the AFC schedule. Hopefully it has changed as one of the games vs NZ is showing as not being on a FIFA window. This draw was done in August 2007 - hopefully NZF has had it changed by now. Apparently the draw of home or away first will be held at FIFA Congress in May.

AFC Qualification Process:

Round 1:     Teams ranked 6-43 are paired by draw and play one home-and-away knock-out round. Teams ranked from 6-24 will be placed in Pot A and teams ranked from 25-43 will be placed in Pot B. From 19 teams that progress through this round the lowest eight based on ranking move to round 2 and the other eleven to round 3.

Match Day 1: 8 Oct 2007
Match Day 2: 28 Oct 2007

or dates to be determined by teams but both matches to be completed by 28th October 2007.

Round 2:     Eight teams are paired by draw and play one home-and-away knock-out round. Four teams progress to round 3

Match Day 1: 9 Nov 2007
Match Day 2: 18 Nov 2007
or dates to be determined by teams but both matches to be completed by 18th November 2007

Round 3:     Eleven qualifiers from round 1 and four qualifiers from round 2 are joined by five highest ranked countries. These 20 teams are split into 5 groups of 4. First and second in each group qualify to next round

Match Day 1: 6 Feb 2008
Match Day 2: 26 Mar 2008
Match Day 3: 7 Jun 2008
Match Day 4: 14 Jun 2008
Match Day 5: 6 Sep 2008
Match Day 6: 10 Sep 2008

Round 4:     10 remaining teams split into two groups of 5 teams
Teams finishing first and second in each group automatically qualify

Match Day 1: 15 Oct 2008
Match Day 2: 19 Nov 2008
Match Day 3: 11 Feb 2009
Match Day 4: 28 Mar 2009
Match Day 5: 1 Apr 2009
Match Day 6: 6 Jun 2009
Match Day 7: 10 Jun 2009
Match Day 8: 17 Jun 2009
Match Day 9: 5 Sep 2009
Match Day 10: 9 Sep 2009

AFC Playoff:     Teams finishing 3rd in each group from Round 4 play home-and-away playoff

Match Day 1: 10 Oct 2009
Match Day 2: 14 Oct 2009

AFC/OFC Playoff:     Team winning AFC Playoff plays winner of OFC qualification in a home and away playoff

Match Day 1: 14 Nov 2009
Match Day 2: 21 Nov 2009Seatts2009-03-14 13:06:22

Allan Hill "Stadium" in Devonport, then the opposition will sink without a trace.
But being serious if there is a half chance that we will reach THE World Cup, there should be 30,000 plus.  In fact with the "new" New Zealander population, Auckland should be able to produce 50,000 if there was anywhere to play it.  Eden Park is under construction.  Nth Harbour if you don't want your car stolen is 25,000, or Mt Smart if you need 30,000.
Nth Harbour is usually 25,000 but can be upgraded with temporary stands to 35,000.
To guarantee the biggest crowd, try downtown Auckland on Friday night and such a truly wacky idea, deserves an equally wacky solution; tow that floating stadium out from Singapore and berth it at one of the docks for the duration.  See attached http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marina_Bay_Floating_Stadium

The only choice at the moment is Wellington

Auckland - Eden Park is under redevelopment capacity around 32-35,000
Christchurch - AMI Stadium under redevelopment - 30-32,000

Wellington - Caketin - Can seat up to 40,000 people.

A World Cup qualifier is just that a massive moment for New Zealand football. Will be a shame if the nations biggest sporting venue doesn't let the most amount of people attend the game. 32,000 attended to watch Beckham, I'd expect more to watch this game. Especially if the game is still there to be won.

Im hoping the fixture decision allows me to attend.

Irrelevant were the game is Egan!!!
If you really want to attend it you will
It aint expensive to fly in this country anymore

As he's flying from Adelaide I doubt the travel internally will impact Egan much Ted.

I do like Edward's suggestion way back though that your car is more likely to be nicked at NHS than Mt. Smart.

This is a huge chance for the game to be watched by a largely dormat following. The more seats on bums the better.

Better atmosphere, better support and importantly more money for our coffers and media coverage of future events as the sport stations realise the potential to market the game.

These two things will help protect the health of football in New Zealand long after we are knocked out of the first round.

People keep saying that you need 40+ thousand stadium. I would like to believe that this is right. Seeing how this is going to be massive game for football in NZ.  Hate to be pessimistic, but outside the footballing community, do people haveany idea there is going to be a match this year. I talking to my mates about it and even the passionate sport followers arn't that keen on the idea of going.and especially the rugby followers, if were playing iraq, all be it for a world cup berth i can't see that being as big a draw card compared to David Beckham.

It is early on, and i do hope that it will be hyped up a lot, and we sell out the stadium.

BUt a football match, on a Wednesday night, against a country people don't really know. Would Jo Average shell out even 50 bucks ta watch it?

Really? To a world cup qualifier. That would be much better. Would really be disheartening if we didn't have a sold out crowd. Even if we got 39 thousand. A thousand yellow seats look tragic. (With the crowd wearing all white. Or maybe all black)

To be honest, I can't see us selling out the stadium the size of RoF - think we could get 25k if things are done right.

I get your point, but it's a bad example - Iraq are out of the qualifying already.

Wellington is the obvious location, in the middle of the country and also the capital.. but then again Auckland having more people could get more people along to the game.. depends what they prefer

   1/2 Agree with you.
I went to the OFC final at the North Shore stadium and the atmosphere was dismal! In fact it was embarrrassing! An average 'Nix game had 10 times more atmosphere.
If the WC playoffs happened in Auckland, no matter their population base, it wouldn't matter a jot how much you hyped it up; bugger all people would show up.
If the WC playoffs happened in Welli, we would pack the Cake tin!
Hate to say it, but we are are prone to a bit of patriotic hype down here!
And being in the middle of the country makes it perfect for all the South Island faithfull to travel.
