Womens football in NZ has been for a long time now showing the male side of the game how things can be done.  Wish more people understood this.

Agree but with one major caveat. The strength in depth of the international men's football, compared to international women's football is still poles apart. The FFs scorelines at the OFC Nations Cup in Noumea continue to highlight this.

Also travel through somewhere like South America, and you can't help but note the huge resources & money thrown at men's sport ie football, in comparison to women's sport.

It seemed pretty much the same when I travelled through Africa (admittedly 20 years ago). Then you have some Muslim countries, where it's very hard for women to participate in any type of sport or exercise.

Thankfully the world is slowly changing, and situation for women & girls is improving for the better worldwide. But at the moment the men's international game is still far stronger in depth.

Well done girls, awesome result against Japan and good luck against Spain.

I wasnt really thinking about the  things you are talking about. I was thinking of how the womens game has been an earlier adopter of player focussed coaching systems than the mens game, an earlier adopter of processes the AB's use (for example) with respect to leadership, responsibility and accountability being something the players are more involved in. I was thinking more along the lines of coaching methods being more in line with guided discovery learning principles which have long been proven to result in retention of knowledge and understanding much better than the old school " stop, stand still, demonstrate ideas. Also the club v school thing not being an issue with the schoolgirls playing on Wednesday afternoons and how this doesnt have anywhere near as big an effect on players training and playing pressures as the boys game experiences. Not everything is perfect but there is more of a general movement to improvement rather than the relentless and mind numbingly stupid egos in the male game pulling in different directions because everyone thinks they know better than the other person. The womens game has a better level of cohesion with respect to the most important aspects which is simply moving forward with coaching systems and philosophies.

less ego, more smarts.

The men's game fund the women's game. Where did you think the money came from for the Japan friendly the other month.

You wot?

Grumpy old bastard alert

some excellent football stories coming out of Uruguay. Nice work Phillip Rollo.

Be great to see Maggie Jenkins get a goal tomorrow morning. So far she has hit the post twice and the crossbar once. Girls will have to be at there absolute best to get a result.

28 Nov 06:13

getting this far is a huge sporting achievement !! once every few years something mind blowing happens on the world stage for a NZ team or individual athlete and this is one of those moments - may the ride continue ..

28 Nov 09:17

I think we will find Spain an easier team to challenge as they will be less mobile and more physical than Japan... looking forward to hiding in my office and watching.

28 Nov 20:05

1-0 down at the half.

28 Nov 21:04

Another great performance by this team, beaten by a better side. So many NZ age group teams, especially men, have been hammered 5/6-0 in KO games whereas today they were still competing right to the end.

Mittendorf was immense again and Rennie a constant threat - just a better end product needed at times

28 Nov 22:00

Typical gutsy performance by the girls. Spain deserved there win, cracking volley to score there second goal. Spain obviously technically better, but interesting stat for me was that our girls got 5 shots on target compared to 4 by Spain. Shows how competitive these girls have been through this tournament.

Mexico beat Canada 1-0 in the other semi final

So we play Canada in the 3rd \ 4th playoff Sunday morning 8am NZT

How was our keeper this morning? Is she in with a shot at winning keeper of the tourny?

Wouldn't it be great to beat the Canadians, 3rd place would be an enormous achievement (so would 4th, but 3rd would be the icing on the cake).

29 Nov 01:35

Keeper made a couple of great saves this morning and couldn't do anything about either goal. Spanish keeper was also very solid, making 1 fantastic save late on. Both of them very confident dealing with crosses and high balls.

Also worth noting we beat Canada 2-1 in a warm up match before the tournament

29 Nov 06:44

Was really impressed with the girls today - especially the first half!! Bit too tough to come back from a goal either side of half time. Gutted that cross-bar shot didn't go in - I thought for all money it was in!!!

If I was to say one thing that I think could help their prospects it would be to play more to the feet of their striker. She is clearly a player who likes the ball at her feet as opposed to one with pace (like the wingers). And because she is so isolated it is really the best option until support arrives! This is an area where we are currently giving away ball.

Come on girls - 3rd place!!!

29 Nov 08:34

A bloody good effort. They can hold their heads very high. 3rd place would be brilliant.

Oi Oi Edgecumbe... lets have a clean sheet

2-0 up at half time over Canada. Both goals by Wisnewski.

01 Dec 20:15

The whole team works so hard off out of possession, hope the fitness levels can handle this work ethic.

01 Dec 20:17

Where ever the ground microphone is positioned it makes it sound like theres only Kiwi supporters at the game

This is more than a bit stressful, surprised how well a New Zealand team's handling pressure

01 Dec 20:39

Dont understand why the kiwi girl got a yellow there

01 Dec 20:40

Lot of wrong decisions going on. Come on girls, don't be like the Nix, it's the 90th minute, don't need to try beat 5 players on your own.

Vote for goal of the tournament. We have two kiwi goals in there, Amelia Abbott against Japan and Kelli Brown against Finland

Shame. I liked Wisneski's second against Canada; good ball in, nice flick on, Grace shielding the ball and fending off the defender, lovely powerful dipping volley under pressure.

Meanwhile, is it too hard for FIFA to edit the videos to show the actual goals we are voting for? Abdulai scored a hattrick against Ghana, Fontes scored a Brace against Cameroon....any clues as to which are the nominated ones?

The Perez free kick against Ghana was decently hit.
