Team Wellington Youth trial invitation

Team Wellington Youth team will participate in the National Youth League Competition from mid-October to late December 2016 (excluding Labour weekend). Team Wellington invites clubs to nominate players born on or after 1 January 1997.

Please send through your nominations to Peter Becker ([email protected]) no later than Wednesday 31 August (5pm).

Team Wellington is intending to hold trials at Memorial Park (Petone) on Wednesday 7 and 14 September, and further information will be sent to those players invited to trial.

Any word on the coach, or have I missed that?

I doubt Miramar would hand it over to Wests - but then again it's an expensive exercise (I take it CF are no longer in the mix?)

rumour has it that Wests are paying the entry fee to youth league and that Crumoy is coaching along with Ben Sippola, however there is a capped number of ole players allowed to be selected

If they're the best players available (Ole) then surely they should play? Or do you have token Miramar, Petone, Olympic players?

Given Olympic won the Central League and Miramar finished 3rd with a number of eligible youth players you could hardly call them "token"

I'd be surprised if any Petone players got near the squad

Were there restrictions put on previous Coaches limiting the number of players from (their) a particular club ?

I think they just signed whoever they wanted to tap up for Miramar

The point I'm making is that if a certain club has 16 players that are the best, then surely you would pick them, as opposed to just picking the odd player from here & there to please. After all, you'd want to win the league, therefore you'd pick the best players.

Sssshhhh.. Declan might hear. Hope Ben Sippola isnt going to break away from his mentors mantra - "its all about player development".

It's a hard one to balance I guess. As the players go back to their winter clubs, who does the player development benefit...

It's a shame their isn't the money or fanbase available to just have one season & one club for 'elite' amateur footballers.

Will be interesting if Declan is involved!! From what I gather he has never let any of his players be involved in anything where he is not coaching...

Watched a CL game between Wests and LH.. Fireworks galore from him.  Called the players/coaching staff all sorts of derogatory names.Mind you Wests were losing..

I here quite a few of the LH players that played that game were involved in the Youth League Team that won last year.  Presume some of them would still eligible, and players from other clubs.  Will be interesting to see if they get a look in after his attitude towards them and wanting to push his own players.

I'm not really in favour of "team limits" & think a squad should be the best available, but as the Coach also represents a fee paying academy some people may cry "conflict of interest" when it comes to determining who are the "best players". They maybe at Ole, maybe not - I wouldnt know.

Of course the pool of players available for selection is also dependant on:

a) Some players choosing not to bother with TW Youth.

b) Wether a club nominates a/any players.

Suppose for various reasons the final squad may be diluted from actually being the "best" Youth Players in the region. - Now what was that about Petone Players....

I figured they'd play before the SS Premiership games seeing as it's the exact same teams? This draw is very different.

Probably partly due to the lack of seats on planes in and out of some of the smaller regions

Youth league only goes for 1 round and I suppose there would be issues at some grounds with changing facilities.

That's the only reason I can think off why on the 30th October Phoenix play Team Wellington in the youth league with a 1pm KO (probably at Newtown) while in the National League Team Wellington play the Phoenix at Davy F with a 2pm KO!

Team Wellington Youth squad announced here:

http://www.twfc.co.nz/news-2/2016/9/19/team-wellin...

14 x Ole

6 x Lower Hutt

3 x Miramar

3 x Petone

2 x Island Bay

1 x Wellington United

1 x Karori

Is 30 players the usual squad size for this ?..Seems like a lot for 9 x games. Suppose a few can just enjoy the training ;-)

With injury, school exam's etc it needs to be big

Awww... I was hoping for some Machiavellian Conspiracy that it was solely increased from last years 27 man squad to 30 was to ensure the Ole representation remained below a max 50% of squad limit. .....Oh, well ;-).

Watched ACFC and Hamilton Wanderers youth teams play a preseason friendly at St Peters College this afternoon in the pouring rain. The match was played in 3 x 30 minute spells with both teams ringing the changes between each third. AC scored the only goal in the second third when both teams appeared to have their squad players on the pitch. AC were probably slightly more composed than Hamilton but the latter created far more chances and were unlucky not to come away with at least a draw. I think both teams will be reasonably pleased with their efforts and Hamilton, at least at youth league level do not look out of their depth. They could well surprise a few people come the end of the season.

I thought it was interesting that Hamilton appeared to have at least 3 x Birko players in their squad. Don't know if they will be there when it kicks off proper, but don't think I'd be happy as a local lad making way for out of catchment imports. I know it happens for the senior teams, but thought the youth league have more of a development focus. Agree with assessment above, Hamilton unlucky several times in the 3'rd spell.

Saw that Wanderers had signed the next big thing "Lewis Tiller" was worse than poor. but passed the ball to AC striker for the Goal so i guess that counts as an assist.  Big step down from West Ham to Ham Wan Youth.

Hi MisAligned,

Appreciate the point you are making.

The issue is very few understand that the scheme this lad got to go West Ham on is a commercial activity, whereby the selected players - we've had a couple of young fringe northern league kids from my club be selected as well in recent years - cough up thousands for the opportunity to travel and play a couple of games for Hammers under the Elite Player Academy Experience.

Here's one for starters from our club this January...

http://www.stuff.co.nz/sport/football/75594399/Mel...

They tend to speak highly of it afterwards, and sometimes it is also in the club's interest to peddle the line.

But as discerning fans we need to maintain a healthy degree of skepticism and should not place any weighting on it in the real world.

Hope this helps.

Apologies to anyone who took offence, my tilt was more against the industry that is developing around young footballers in NZ offering trips, scholarships, contracts to players who may not be up to it for their own financial gain no interest in if its appropriate for the player as long as they can pay the fee.
