Thats why we love football. Because sometimes the little guy can get a result against a giant.
Boca 41 shots and only an og.
River Plate fans are in trolling overdrive.
Lots of noise about match fixing. It was paying around 50-1 for a draw

How would it place in NZ football history? I'm putting it top 5;
1; AWs vs Italy
2; Ferns vs Norway
3; ACFC vs Cruz Azul
4; ACFC vs Boca Juniors

Then yer China 82s, yer Saudi 81s, yer Slovakia 2010, yer Bahrain 2009, and that time I scored 4 goals vs Pukekohe as an U9. In no particular order.....

I'm ready for the vindictive comments.

AWs is Bahrain at the top of that list for sure.

Would put all the results at the 2010 World Cup ahead of 3 and 4 and then a couple of the results to qualify for the 82 world cup which were achieved under some real pressure. Then maybe the ACFC vs Boca Juniors.

They wont want to play NZ clubs again they are know 0 from 2

Shark yeah forgot about the Bahrain game then you also have the last 2 seasons semi finals games in the A League which i would also put ahead of the Boca game for me.

GET YOUR SHIRTS OFF FOR THE BOYS

This is what Boca get for not taking the tournament seriously and sending the juniors.

That Paraguay match would be way down for me. It felt like an opportunity lost, we didn't muster anything.

Kingz vs Carlton in 1999 would be the top Australian club match on my list. The first pro club match ever.

AWs vs Australia for the two OFC wins in 1998 and 2002 would be a shout for top 10. Maybe not 2002, Aussie sent a weak squad if I recall correctly.

Media in Argentina really giving Boca a difficult time.. Juan Roman Riquelme who is the president has been told to leave by many of its members, Russo the coach has also left (although he was a temporary coach after Juan Gago was let go). I follow river plate my whole life and I am a life member of them, i can giver some perspective and background about Boca, Boca has always been divided, but now the division has deepened further because there are no sporting results. There are those who love Riquelme and those who do not love him, due to the club's politics and opposition. Boca Juniors' season is dramatic, as have been their recent years. The Buenos Aires team has not won the Libertadores since 2007, losing in the final in 2012, 2018, and 2023, and has not won a national competition since the league title in 2022. Everything that could go wrong has gone wrong, and the last six months have been a constant fall towards the edge of La Bombonera, with Juan Román Riquelme, the club's ultimate idol and president, increasingly questioned by fans who will love him eternally but who also want to win. Boca was eliminated in the Libertadores preliminary stage against Alianza de Lima and lost in the quarterfinals of the Apertura tournament against Independiente, confirming the sporting and institutional crisis that led to the dismissal of Fernando Gago, who was on the bench: "Let them all go," chanted the Bombonera stands that day. I spoke to my uncle in Buenos Aires after the match, he said Boca Juniors is completely lacking in everything, and unfortunately, it's going to stay that way until there's a change in management. There's no sporting project whatsoever, no one qualified to do scouting, no sporting director either, the physical trainers have been a disaster for years. The club is run like it's a team playing in a local league, and it shows on the pitch... long may it continue :D

Thats an interesting take on Boca. What do you think about the rumours of match fixing.....or are Boca just crap? 40 shots doesnt seem like a side not trying to win. Also, this is probably not the right place but what do you make of the new River wizz kid Mastantuono? 40 million to Real is a lot for a 17 year old. Argentina has got some great youngsters coming through
25 Jun 09:38
All the Argentina clubs struggle against low blocks, in Copa Libertadores it happens all the time against teams from Peru Chile Bolivia etc. in terms of match fixing, that’s usual crap you hear in Argentina if a game doesn’t go the way you expect, Boca have been a poor team for ages and there is an argument to be made that other clubs in Argentina have performed better in recent years, including racing, lanus, Velez sarsfield and huracan.. and they got it because of their big name and huge fan base. Yes, river plate talent production in recent years is crazy, Julian Alvarez, enzo, mastanuoto and Echevarri (best player imo) was sold to man city for over $60 million. River plate has made over $300 million usd in sales in recent years, with that money the fans (fans in Argentina own the club and no club is private) to re-do and expand our stadium, which is now a modern stadium and has over 85,000 seats.. Boca have none of that, and the current situation of the Bombonera is terrible..

Actually was walking around the Bombonera in January when visiting BA. She sure seems an old ground from the outside.

27 Jun 08:08
So Garrow is now a legend in St America. I hope he gets a pro chance somewhere.
I too have visited the Boca stadium in BA. To describe it as decrepid would be charitable. I had a friend who went to a sold out game there and he said when the fans were bouncing the whole stand flexed and swayed. He said the huge concrete support beam near him had cracks in it big enough to put your finger in. Scarey stuff.
Football in Argentina is another world.

From the public comments beneath the Auckland City v Bayern match report on Stuff.
The world's media had commented that a team of forklift drivers, barbers and storemen had faced an elite team worth 1 billion dollars.

COYI :
A team worth $1 billion, yet not one forklift-certified bloke among them. Unbelievable!

In reply to COYI
They have their own personal forklift driver to lift and deposit their weekly pay cheques into their accounts...

BAYERN'S COACH KOMPANY ON HIS OBSERVATIONS SCOUTING AUCKLAND CITY'S MATCHES ON FIFA+:
Dogs, barbecues, stray balls: What Bayern Munich coach Vincent Kompany saw while scouting Auckland City FC | Stuff
“I saw dogs in the background. It was great. I think there was a barbecue going on in the background, and every now and then, a ball from another pitch just interrupted the middle of the game..."
“If you actually watch the game, which is what my job is, the level of play is actually higher than what we would associate with the setting, but, yeah, a very different experience.”

He should come check out Porirua Park then.

Quite surprised how quiet it is here, in the after match of the tournament.

Does anyone realistically think someone may be taken a punt on by a professional club anywhere?

Garrow is an interesting one. Has he played in any youth WC squads (forgive the ignorance), I hadnt heard of him. Was surprised that he started the second game after all the media hype for Tracy 'saving x shots'. Garrow did very well even if it was for parrying most shots that came his way and got luck on a few occasions.

Thought Yoo showed flashes but probably not enough of a sample size. The backline did well for the last game but doubt someone like the Nix do not already have a good understanding of Mitchell et al.

Whats Ilich like in the Northern League?  Seemed vocal, commanding and came across well in his interviews off the pitch. But looked a little static in his game. Perhaps forgiven due to heat and strength of opponent. But he is another one who has kicked on despite not making age group NT squads.

I thought Gerson played well and came in well for Lobo who had a very tough time against Olise. Gray did well and was impressed with his composure on the ball and not to mention that goal.

Top sides in the world have stopped buying off the back of good world cups performances due to the small sample size (no more James Rodriguez transfers). However, some clubs out there at the other end of the scale could do well with making a relatively cheap, low risk punt on a few of these players. That's if they want to give up there day jobs..

Did Matt Ellis start for ACFC much at the CWC? Seems he's one getting a trial with the Nix (would be his 2nd one if so).

Important to remember than City are less dominant in the NRFL this season than prior, ie might actually be some players at other NRFL clubs with stronger claims to get a chance at pro football.

You'd think Garrow has interested a few clubs, surely? Hopefully ACFC don't put barriers in the way, like Manurewa did with van Hattam all those years ago.

Jerson was a right winger at Melville, and his short stay at Rewa. He could be a sqaud player in the A-League for a lower-half team?

Ilich is at his level in the national league.

I always liked Adam Bell, but he didn't do anything of note. And did Joe Lee get on the pitch? He's a decent winger that is worth looking at.

Word was that Ellis was very well received in Wellington during his first trial and made an impression during his time down there.

No idea why he didn't get a deal off the back of that, but they've asked him to come back again, so he must be a piece in the puzzle they're trying to put together for the upcoming A-League season.

As for interest in the Auckland City lads specifically, there was a few scouts from MLS Next Pro teams in attendance at their matches looking at the likes of Lobo & Bell in particular - those are the ones I know of, and that is the target age range for that level (nothing has come from it anyway for either) but it's not entirely inconceivable that Garrow has piqued some level of interest.

MLS Next Pro, while it may looked down upon by people for being a reserve league for the MLS, it is still fully professional league/setup and would be a very realistic step up for those type of players. Troy Putt went to Minnesota II from Birkenhead and James Bulkeley went to FC Dallas affiliate North Texas off the back of lower level stuff in the UAE, and an unsuccessful trial with Auckland FC.

Perhaps just edit Thread to read ACFC at FIFA comps.

https://www.friendsoffootballnz.com/2025/09/11/auckland-city-lose-warm-up-game-but-get-vital-preparation-for-big-match/

Auckland City have lost 1-0 to United Arab Emirates club FC United in a gritty friendly that served as vital preparation for Monday’s FIFA Intercontinental Cup play-off in Cairo.

The match, played in sweltering conditions, saw every member of the Navy Blues squad get minutes in a high-intensity clash against a side coached by Italian football legend Andrea Pirlo.

Auckland City face African champions Pyramids FC in a sudden-death playoff at Cairo’s iconic 30 June Stadium.

Pyramids FC, fresh from their CAF Champions League triumph, represent a formidable challenge.

The prize? A ticket to the second round and a showdown with Asia’s top club, Al-Ahli.

I thought the World Club Cup thing was replacing the Intercontinental Cup thing? FIFA sure don't mind creating a whole load of bullshark tournaments to make some money!

Nah the old Club World Cup format has been spun off into this Intercontinental Cup (with some smallish changes) so there's remains a yearly international club comp now that the Club World Cup is every 4 years - you're right, they love creating more money making opportunities!

3-0 loss to Pyramids in Cairo. And with that ACFC's long (and proud) history in FIFA comps is likely over.

As others have posted be interesting to see if they just revert back to the old Central United from here onwards.

Domestic footy and possibly the OFC Champions League is all they will have in the future.

Wasn't a great game to watch. Auckland City struggled to get out of their half for most of the match. Pyramids were very dominant in possession but struggled to do much with it for the most part. A few extra goals by Pyramids chalked off for offside as well.

Wow. I hope ACFC have had their facebook hacked, otherwise they are going in a very different direction.
I have an amazing ability to find my way out of mazes. I'm pathological.
