The ASB Womens Youth League kicks off this weekend with six-time winners Auckland Football once again favourites but likely to face firm challenges from Northern Football and Capital Football.

The 2011 season is the first of three years with age limitations transitioning back to an unrestricted national league in 2014 and this year will be contested by U-20 teams with five overage players per squad, although only three of those can take the field at one time.

Despite the age cap, 19 current or former Football Ferns will suit up when the season begins on Saturday, and while the majority will play in the leagues Northern Conference, reigning champions Auckland wont enjoy the mortgage on international experience that has characterised previous title winning sides.

Aucklands first team can still call on the services of veteran Maia Jackman and Football Fern midfielder Annalie Longo, striker Rosie White and also Hannah Wall who played for Capital against Auckland in the last final, and have a depth of age-group internationals to suggest they will be in contention when the playoffs start in March.

However, Football Ferns Aroon Clansey and Abby Erceg have been drafted in to an Auckland Development squad, bolstering a very young side which competes in the league for the first time.

North of the Harbour Bridge, former Football Fern midfielder Priscilla Duncan leads what looks like the main challenger to Aucklands dominance, captaining a Northern Football squad boasting eight players capped at senior international level while another, New Zealand goalkeeper Jenny Bindon, is also involved as assistant coach.

Spearheaded by Sarah McLaughlin, Waikato-Bay of Plenty loom as the dark horse in the Northern Conference, drawing on a core of players who won the 2010 Womens Knockout Cup with Claudelands Rovers.

In the Southern Conference, 2004 Champions and five-time finalists Capital Football shape as the team to beat with perennial Golden Boot contender Renee Leota fronting their attack once again, and former internationals Emily McColl and Emma Humphries driving the midfield.

Meanwhile New Zealand fullback Anna Green, who notched a hat trick for Auckland in the 2009 final, will return to Palmerston North to lead Central Footballs campaign, while Mainland Pride and Football South have both named young squads with one eye on building player depth.

The League begins on Saturday with the two Auckland sides square of at Keith Hay Park, and Northern meets Waikato-BOP at Fred Taylor Park in Whenuapai. Capital open their season in Dunedin against Football South while on Sunday Mainland welcome Central to Christchurchs Linfield Park.

Although Football South did ask dad to have no overage players. He asked if he could have Kushla to give us some experience.

Schedule on the NZF site still says Seatoun Park. Has there been a venue change?

I never ceased to be amazed by Footballsouth they desevre a thread of their own, muppets.
They should let the coaches pick who they want and worry about their own jobs.

Not available, not picked or not allowed to picked (whatever the resaon) whether they're overage or underage its still bloody frustrating because I think we have the talent to make the final or at least a Semi (are there semi's?). The U16 Fed tournament from a couple of years ago shows we can do it.

Oh well last weeks result looked to be an improvement. Another great report from the ScouseKiwi at http://www.sportswebsoccer.com/cgi-bin/control.pl?Function=News&Option=Feature&Item=20110130.txt&Month

My prediction is the girls will beat Mainland this weekend.

Yeah I think Dad was the coach of that u16 team. He always said this girl called Kate Strafford was very good. I wonder where she is now? But yeah Football South = Muppets. What did you think of Sahara MacDonald last week? Young striker..

2-1 to Capital today. Good first half where we dominated - second a bit scrappier and pretty even.

AUCKLAND Waikato-Bay of Plenty Football have leapfrogged their main rivals in the ASB Womens Youth League Northern Conference by posting a resounding 7-1 away win over Auckland Football on Saturday.
Backing up last weekends 7-0 thrashing of Aucklands development side in Hamilton, Waikato-BOP repeated their attacking display against the top Auckland team at Keith Hay Park to take the lead in the Northern half of the competition.
Over-age striker Helen Collins dominated the scoresheet with a four-goal haul after coming on as a 59th minute substitute but the victory was a long way to being secure at halftime when the visitors led through goals to Holly Patterson, Olivia Chance and Kate Loye.
Martine Puketapu netted a consolation goal for the home side midway through Collins devastating late cameo.
Waikatos rise up the table was aided by Auckland Development who held previous leaders Northern Football to a goalless draw at the same ground later that day thanks to the steadying influence of Football Ferns Abby Erceg and Aroon Clansey and determined performances from the likes of Tessa Berger in defence.
In Wellington on Sunday, Capital Football overtook Central at the top of the Southern Conference standings with a 2-1 win in Petone.
Capitals Evie Millynn opened the home sides account from a fourth minute corner and Emma Rosltons left footed strike doubled the advantage.
Football Fern Anna Green struck for Central within a minute of the start of the second half but Capital would hang on to maintain their unbeaten record.
Mainland stayed in the hunt for a place in the cross-conference semi-finals by outlasting Football South 5-3 in Dunedin.
Sam Muirhead struck a hat trick for the home side but it proved in vain as Mainlands Haley McKnight and Monique Barker kept the visitors level in the first half before a goal to Gabrielle Brodie and a brace from Hannah Wong took the game away from the Southerners.
The 2011 ASB Womens Youth League is the first of three seasons of the national league with age-restrictions and limited amount of over-age players. The age-limit will increase each season before returning to full unrestricted status in 2014

Dave Edmunsen must get coach of the year. His team has demolished both Auckland teams by embarrasing scorelines. Seems to be the top womens coach in the game. Hope New Zealand Football can secure his services again for the future.

Don't know what he's like these days, but he was spectacularly good entertainment while he was coaching at Ngaruawahia. Some of his blow-ups during, and after, games were magnificent to watch.

How well publicised has this been in Wellington? Hardly any press coverage in Waikato despite the team doing well and playing some fantastic football!

Heard through the grapevine he has been sacked by New Zealand Football.

on another note here is what it says on wiki about the Central coach ha
"He is widely regarded by fans of both Everton and Sunderland as one of the worst players to turn out for both of these clubs"

Capital played Northern off the park today at Memorial.

3-0 full time. 1-0 at the half.

Northern had a fair share of possession but never tested Cap Footy's keeper. They seemed to be a team of giants and played predominantly route one, which didn't really do them much good.

Amanda Rasch had a blinder at the back for Welly, and Renee Leota was the star of the game, setting up the first goal and scoring the second (turn the centre half, blast it in the bottom corner from the edge of the box) and third (ripper free kick from 25 yards into top corner).

Northern beat Waikato twice this season I think, and Waikato will now play Wellington next weekend somewhere.

Based on the football on show today, I'd recommend getting along to watch.

Renee doesn't live in Auckland!! Surely you have realised by now that to be recognised or appreciated by NZF you have to live in Auckland.

WaiBop have some fantastic players who are constantly overlooked by Herdman, Readings et al. Sarah McLaughlin, Helen Collins, Kate Loye, Holly Patterson etc.. Even Olivia Chance is being put under pressure to move to Auckland from what I hear?

Good semi-final win today though 10-1....

Looking forward to a good final next week WaiBop vs Wellington - where, when??
