ASB Women's League
The ASB Womens Youth League kicks off this weekend with six-time winners Auckland Football once again favourites but likely to face firm challenges from Northern Football and Capital Football.
The 2011 season is the first of three years with age limitations transitioning back to an unrestricted national league in 2014 and this year will be contested by U-20 teams with five overage players per squad, although only three of those can take the field at one time.
Despite the age cap, 19 current or former Football Ferns will suit up when the season begins on Saturday, and while the majority will play in the leagues Northern Conference, reigning champions Auckland wont enjoy the mortgage on international experience that has characterised previous title winning sides.
Aucklands first team can still call on the services of veteran Maia Jackman and Football Fern midfielder Annalie Longo, striker Rosie White and also Hannah Wall who played for Capital against Auckland in the last final, and have a depth of age-group internationals to suggest they will be in contention when the playoffs start in March.
However, Football Ferns Aroon Clansey and Abby Erceg have been drafted in to an Auckland Development squad, bolstering a very young side which competes in the league for the first time.
North of the Harbour Bridge, former Football Fern midfielder Priscilla Duncan leads what looks like the main challenger to Aucklands dominance, captaining a Northern Football squad boasting eight players capped at senior international level while another, New Zealand goalkeeper Jenny Bindon, is also involved as assistant coach.
Spearheaded by Sarah McLaughlin, Waikato-Bay of Plenty loom as the dark horse in the Northern Conference, drawing on a core of players who won the 2010 Womens Knockout Cup with Claudelands Rovers.
In the Southern Conference, 2004 Champions and five-time finalists Capital Football shape as the team to beat with perennial Golden Boot contender Renee Leota fronting their attack once again, and former internationals Emily McColl and Emma Humphries driving the midfield.
Meanwhile New Zealand fullback Anna Green, who notched a hat trick for Auckland in the 2009 final, will return to Palmerston North to lead Central Footballs campaign, while Mainland Pride and Football South have both named young squads with one eye on building player depth.
The League begins on Saturday with the two Auckland sides square of at Keith Hay Park, and Northern meets Waikato-BOP at Fred Taylor Park in Whenuapai. Capital open their season in Dunedin against Football South while on Sunday Mainland welcome Central to Christchurchs Linfield Park.
Yeah it is that Andy, he has been a lot of womens and girls coaching over the last few years, coached AFF rep teams as well as three kings in the womens prems.

Although Football South did ask dad to have no overage players. He asked if he could have Kushla to give us some experience.
Which is why I asked rather than "correcting" you

Yeah I think Dad was the coach of that u16 team. He always said this girl called Kate Strafford was very good. I wonder where she is now? But yeah Football South = Muppets. What did you think of Sahara MacDonald last week? Young striker..
another excellent match report.
Hahahahahaha
Any info as to where and when the game will be played?

3-0 full time. 1-0 at the half.
Northern had a fair share of possession but never tested Cap Footy's keeper. They seemed to be a team of giants and played predominantly route one, which didn't really do them much good.
Amanda Rasch had a blinder at the back for Welly, and Renee Leota was the star of the game, setting up the first goal and scoring the second (turn the centre half, blast it in the bottom corner from the edge of the box) and third (ripper free kick from 25 yards into top corner).
Northern beat Waikato twice this season I think, and Waikato will now play Wellington next weekend somewhere.
Based on the football on show today, I'd recommend getting along to watch.
Looks like the membership of the Renee Leota Appreciation Society has just doubled.

Renee doesn't live in Auckland!! Surely you have realised by now that to be recognised or appreciated by NZF you have to live in Auckland.
WaiBop have some fantastic players who are constantly overlooked by Herdman, Readings et al. Sarah McLaughlin, Helen Collins, Kate Loye, Holly Patterson etc.. Even Olivia Chance is being put under pressure to move to Auckland from what I hear?
Good semi-final win today though 10-1....
Looking forward to a good final next week WaiBop vs Wellington - where, when??
