And as an aside, what is the whole point of putting an age limit on the league? From the games I saw, the overage players definitely stood out. If NZ Football wanted to grow the game, surely they would let the best players play and look towards introducing either another league with youth players, or a "reserve" grade...? Allows development of younger players whilst keeping the integrity of the nationa league. Ah, yeah - the cost! Why does women's football always get the raw deal.

why are you comparing it to the men? They are different. We need to do what is best to achieve growth in the wimmins game. I'd say if a federation took the NYL seriously enough then they would have achieved more than what the league a couple of years ago did. I think Capital did a good job and will reap the benefits. Can't speak for the other Feds but in the games I saw I definitely didn't see three over-age players shining out.

I don't know what the thinking is behind the age limitation and I agree it would be unlikely to happen in the men's game but as Feverish quite rightly points out the needs of the two are different.
What I can say is that the CF wimmin's team played great football to watch, were a credit to Bevin and Pete who coached them, and while the over age players were quality, some of the stars were youngsters.
In any case that team has completely changed my perspective on wimmin's football which was previously focussed on matters that had nothing to do with the game.
I feel sorry for the girls who missed out on playing in the league this year, but I don't think it's an example of girls getting a raw deal. It's just life.

On this occasion, Mainland Pride and Canterbury United men's youth shared a flight from Chch to Wellington.
It's possible that last week Football South and Otago United may have had a similar arrangement.

Perhaps News meant why not play both games at the same venue, but at say 11 and 1? Wouldn't be a bad day of football?
Mainland were definitely the strongest competition Capital have faced. They shut down Renee superbly, but gave her one chance and she scored. The other goal was a howler by the Mainland keeper, and she'll be kicking herself, because she was solid under the ball all day.
However, Mainland just didn't look like scoring

Mainland were decent. Wimmins footy down there has come on in the last couple of years - they have some good young players coming through. Good goal from Ren, and yeah uncharacteristic of their keeper for the second -as she is decent. Capitals monopoly on possession didn't really translate to too many chances.

Pretty comfortable victory for the Mainland girls in wet,cold conditions.Despite battling hard Football South were quite poor I thought;their players were considerably inferior to Mainland(which is borne out by the table I suppose).They did score a very good goal though:almost like a training ground drill executed to perfection.Most of the Mainland girls had their moments,and it seems the coaches have selected far better than last year,when some players were elevated beyond their ability.Things are looking good for the team:congrats...

Not that weird, but the Mainland keeper and a couple of the defenders had shockers which lead to at least four of the goals - Waikato were always in control apart from a period just after the break but Mainland could only pull a goal back.
Capital defeated Mainland in Wellington and were not a full strenght when they played in Christchurch. Clearly the Northern Conference is stronger than the Southern Conference which is born out by the teams in the Final.

Yeah Waikato were well worth their victory and looked a class above in certain positions.The Mainland girls fought hard,which should be applauded,but it was huff and puff really.I thought the Mainland coaches lost the plot big time in the second half,which really played into Waikato's hands:going three at the back was really risky;it allowed Waikato too much time and space.And to compound this,they made a series of positional changes that made absolutely no sense:centre halves moving into midfield,a right back going up front(!!??),a midfielder going into the defence and the team's classiest striker,Aimee Phillips spending the second half at right midfield...utterly bizarre...

Agree and then subbing of Dayna Napa who looked the most likely to open up the Waikato defence.
