Canterbury United Dragons

Canterbury United has appointed Alan Walker as the 2013 Canterbury United Youth Head Coach.

Walker has coached the team successfully in the past, winning the title 2 of the 3 seasons he held the reins.

Walker is excited about further developing the youth players that are coming through the talent programmes from around the region. “I’ve enjoyed the role immensely in the past, and look forward to working with Keith and the Club in continuing to see Canterbury United succeed on the national stage.”

One of Walker’s first tasks will be to identify the up and coming players to challenge the established players to field the best team possible. An assistant coach will be appointed in due course.

Jordie B back for the Dragons this season? He's back in Chch later in the year.

That's the hot pick doing the rounds but others will know if he's been keeping goal for any team in Aussie.

Keith mentioned early on in the MPL season about lack of depth in Canterbury this year in that position.

I can see the mid field as the biggest area of concern. Unsure what Aaron Clapman is up and would assume Darren White will be staying at Auckland City and this season in the Mainland PFL has not thrown up any bolters so players putting their hand up saying pick me in the midfield.

On other areas on the park some of the Dragons squad members from 2012 have been 'missing in action' on the field over the winter, so likely several imports will be required.

Coashing wise we have yet to hear who the assistant(s) coaches will be.

Sounds like WaiBOP United have been busy with signings.

Did Skippy Stewart ever play for CU? He was pretty decent for Nelson this year.

No not good enough, the one year he was turning out for Otago he broke his leg muppett. And now he's married that's that. Did his chances no good either by appearing in Chelsea's tutu at the English Cup final :) No money in the budget to fly players from outside ChCh to games plus they want the squad to train together so no Josh Smith either.
Coaching staff is KB assisted by Sean Devine and Dan Terris.
Look for Corey Mitchell to make his debut in the mid-field, should have been the player of the day at the Chatham Cup final over Pitts.
2-3 key signings to happen in the next few days.

i agree, mitchell looked class, but pitman was still worthy of his prize

no josh smith eh?  that will be a big loss

any idea of other signings?  would collins ever consider playing again?  it's all too quiet down there!

Apparently Steve Morrison from Narra might be heading down there

And Glen Collins is a no, don't think he even played in the Premiership at all this season, could be wrong. Apparently the club is chasing a more than adequate replacement for Smith, an enterprising midfielder to partner Clapham seen as a key ingredient to overall success along with a partner for Kamo up front with Ash Welbourn still on crutches. Ken Yamamoto also in the mix.

Gotta remember we're all still recovering from a huge weekend plus Timaru 5 a side is on this weekend where many a star is born (or conceived at the very least) :)

stu kelly would play off kamo ok wouldn't he?

Stu Kelly is in great form and considering playing. Malcolm Knox is somewhere in Asia (Singapore?) for work and is past his best anyway. KB doesn't need to talk to the Cashmere players (he has been anyway) as John Brown is on the board as team liaison. Don't believe everything yor read Reg.

2 north island imports are on their way

also, braithwaite is yet to talk to players from cashmere.  considering he's recently lost white to auckland and had collett at waitak on loan, this seems a little odd

No the Keith Braitewaite spoke to all Mainland PFL teams including Suburbs, maybe more of a case that in the build up to the Chatham Cup Final  built up did not go near Technical.

I imagine that Danny Boys will be in the mix if staying in Christchurch.

Yes the man of the man not easy to pick could may been anyone of five or six players. Stu Kelly never stopped running all day, with the back four also having good games.

Agree about Cory Mitchell has got better with each game in his first full season of senior footy. In pre season was fighting with Jordan Halligan for a starting place in the midfield..

Good to see in the Cup final that when Andy Pits received his yellow card Cory raced in and was pushing Pitman away from the ref.

ah, that's good AllWhite82 and Ronaldo Know - it just made me think when i read what smith wrote in the press

i reckon that cashmere team offers a really good base for a strong asb prem side

boys would be a good addition too

what can you tell us about this dude N-Bomb?

Very nice technical player, excellent passer and crosser, he's one of the rare corner takers who actually gets his corner past the first man as well. He's a former English youth international who struggled with injuries early on at Narra, has been very good this season. Tough to say how he will go at ASBP level - he probably lacks the extra bit of pace to really excel in an attacking midfield/roaming wing role which I hear Braithwaite wants him to play in.
If they manage to retain the services of Clapham it could be a really good duo, but it's his first step up to this level so he'll be a bit of an unknown quantity in how he performs.

Good now let's have some more printing press of who's in or out.
Training must be under way at Tulett Park this week with daylight saving.

Yes extended squad training underway at the moment, three times during the week and Saturday morning. I hear a few players are finding the pace to hot to handle.

Good job sort the pretenders out early.
I've thought having watched previous years preseason that it was a bit under done in the fitness dept.

With Waitakere only a shadow of their former self this could be a great chance for Canterbury United to reach the ASBP final (again) and qualify for the O League. I think TW will be your biggest rival to challenge ACFC. Look forward to some great games in the season ahead.

None yet. Martin will still be waiting to get the players signed up on the dotted line before Keith goes public with team list.
