Yes a great round of results for us on the whole.  2nd on the table is a good thing.

Got to agree it was quite bizarre of the referee.  And an A league referee at that.  Canterbury United officials etc need to start realising that the fans are an asset to the team.  There was certainly nothing offensive - always seems to be good banter.  I have heard teams are envious of the rousing support from the vocal fans down at English Park.

I heard today that Canterbury United officials had allocated people on the bank to 'keep an eye' on the supporters.  To use someone's daughter to text and tell feedback is a little desperate.  The big burly security guard seemed to enjoy his time on the bank and even joined in the banter with a few comments.

Keith came over to a few supporters as they were leaving to apologise for what happened and said to keep up the support.

Good score to Keith for doing that. He knows full well that we have the best and most fans of any team in the ASB Premiership. Keep it going guys.

Good work by our Southern neighbors taking 3 points away from Waitakere.

that is just bizarre. what was peter o'leary thinking? and for anyone to take any notice of him is also strange.  peter always struck me as a good guy, are you sure nothing sinister was going on?

Not that I could see or hear. And the ref came over after we scored so there was plenty of cheering thus making the 'please quieten down' plea rather challenging.

In the past, that side of the field have been accused of unsavory behaviour so without insinuating they actually did anything wrong, they don't exactly make it tough to point the finger at.

Was there any language or chants that were in appropriate?

Yes they do make it hard sometimes, however I didn't hear anything too out of order. Just general cheering on their team, and hassling of the other. Bring Back Bunce was even used at one stage.

Imagine a WSW game being stopped for overzealous supporting.

Who were the standout players in this game from both teams?

Don't really know the Waibop team however Highfield for some top saves and Clapham as everything he does is either golden or ginger.

Best players for me were for Canterbury, Shawn O'Brien, Adam Highfield and Stu Kelly, and from WaiBop good games from Tyler Lissette (CB) and Reid Drake(LM), Liam Higgins(LB) who combined well on the left.

Nothing unsavoury from my viewpoint....  Really put Martin in a difficult position no wonder Keith apologised.  The fans are vocal from behind the dugout that is the main issue - you can hear them all around the small ground that English park is.  There was nothing offensive that I recall, but for those that have no sense of humour, a thin skin (they need to go to an English Football game or at least a vocal A-league game) or are used to NZ rugby games then the shock of someone supporting their team is indeed a surprise.

Some of the supporters on the bank were indeed taken back by the response by security but I suppose Canterbury United has supporters queuing at the gate and they can afford to lose some of the true supporters that really give Canterbury a lift.  And the write up in the last program before Christmas was about the spectator numbers dropping off.  The officials at Canterbury United need to foster good spectator support - as far as support goes I have it from someone that has been involved at Auckland, Waikato and Hawkes Bay level that the fans on the bank over the past 5 years are something they really want to foster at their own home games and are quite envious of.  Maybe Canterbury United would rather have supporters that sat, clapped and did not say anything resulting in no atmosphere resulting in low spectator turnout and an even more reliance on Poker Machine funding and a model that is unsustainable.

The only way to turn a spectator into a fan (there is difference - a fan makes sure s/he is always at the game) is to foster a good base in which those who chose to turn up as spectators turn into fans as a result of the atmosphere and the quality of the game.

Look at models overseas it is not rocket science...

Yes definitely onside in that shot. Coulda been crucial too if not for some top Highfield saves.

From Canterbury Facebook page.Luke Marsland will no longer be playing for the Dragons. He is released from the team as of this week.

i love keith's work, but his miss rate is a bit of a worry, especially when someone is in at the expense of a local.  marsland never had any real pedigree in the game.

just because someone carries an accent it doesn't mean they are of asb prem standard.

is bacon any good?

Have only seen Chris Bacon come on late as a sub a few times. Looks ok, similar to Kamo as in holding up ball, but appears to have a bit more pace. Agree with Reg22, and can't see why someone local couldn't be used as late impact player like Ede maybe, or give Ken Y more of a run. Even give an U20 a 10 minute run such as Aaron Spain ...

I've only seen Bacon come sizzling off the bench, and he played all right.  Wasn't even in the squad on the wknd. So not really sure I can comment, except that he was buffed.

Interesting to see the referee for last weeks game has won a spot as a ref in the World Cup.  I hope he does a better job of calming down the 60,0000 odd spectators cheering on their team there!

It seems ACFC averaging 500-800, Canterbury probably nearer 400-600 and Hawkes Bay averaging 300-500 are the only ASBP teams attracting regular crowds. The rest would be under a couple of a hundred. It's probably no accident that ACFC, CU and HB have the best facilities and grounds, including compact covered stands.

Peter will just get the 4th official to find the most genuine mild mannered guy at the park to pass on the message - "to keep the support down". That will do the trick.

Someone who has one good season as striker then played last year as a midfielder!! As for bacon I made the comment as soon as he was signed that it was a waste. another player from overseas a success yet the young lad from TRIPLE winning Tech, Ede wont be considered even though he finished top scorer for them!

Canterbury United now clear in second place on table after Hawkes Bay 3 - 1 win over Wanderers SC on Sundays has seen Wanderers awarded game 3 - 0 after Hawkes Bay fielded a player not registered, full story below..

January 16, 2014

Hawke’s Bay sanctioned for fielding ineligible player

New Zealand Football wishes to advise that Hawke’s Bay United has been sanctioned for fielding an ineligible player in the ASB Premiership Round 8 match against Wanderers SC on Sunday 12 January.

Midfielder Harry Edge appeared off the bench for Hawke’s Bay in the 84th minute of the 3-1 win at North Harbour Stadium but was not eligible to play as, at the time of the match, the player’s transfer had not been properly concluded.

It has therefore been determined that the player participated in the match ineligibly. As a result, Hawke’s Bay United has been found to have been in breach of the regulations.

The club will be sanctioned with a fine and the loss of three competition points.

The original result of the match has now become void and a 3-0 win will instead be awarded to Wanderers SC.

“When finalising the reporting of all match results, as is standard practice after each round in the competition, it was discovered that one of the players was not registered with the club,” says Chris Kemp, the Competitions and Events Manager for New Zealand Football.

“The club was contacted regarding the situation and it was established that his transfer from a previous club had not been properly concluded. It is an unfortunate situation but if the regulations are breached then we have no option but to impose a sanction.”

The deduction of the points from the Wanderers game means Hawke’s Bay now has 11 points and drops from second to fifth on the ASB Premiership table. Wanderers remains at the foot of the table but the newly-awarded win takes the team’s season tally from two points to five.

“To lose the three points at this stage is devastating but the rules are the rules, no matter how unintentional the indiscretion was,” Hawke’s Bay United General Manager John McGifford says.

“In this case it was a simple procedural error and one which is truly regretted. All of us at Hawke’s Bay United are highly committed to ASB Premiership success and, despite the setback of the weekend, that resolve remains unchanged.”

Both teams will return to ASB Premiership action this weekend for Round 9 with Hawke’s Bay travelling to Southern United on Saturday 18 January and Wanderers visiting Canterbury United on Sunday 19 January.

Does this now mean Waitakere will be fined and lose three points for fielding Maksim Manko against Phoenix A when Waibop, who held his registration, seemed unawares Manko had moved to another club? If not, double standards surely?

Not a competition game so points would not come into it.

However, I have heard that HBU was fined $2,000 (which to me seems totally out of line) so, no reason why a like fine could not be imposed - precedents have been set.
