ok but seriously - the one thing that we could have an adult discussion on is Clapham - you said something like he had no influence on the game - i thought while he played a little deeper than I thought he would have he was very busy, tackling, distributing and making runs forward from deep.  I thought he was a stand out - and not just because he was the only ginger.

ironically I don't agree with that at all - although I guess since this time I have no invested interest in said game my views can be taken impartially though.

I have no vested interest in it either. I just posted what I saw giving pro's to both sides where due and con's to both sides where due. The exact same went in the ACFC thread.

yeah I saw that.  Didn't mean to offend you - just thought you went a bit personal is all - sure they are players but they are people too.

Anyway - Clapham - let's discuss that because we both saw it differently - is this possibly why no-one can get a consensus on if he should be playing at a higher level?

Cory Mitchell was ginger too and on the field. Did we watch the same game?

Agree that Clapham sat deeper but I would argue that Kelly, Morrison and Mitchell had were more effectual. Yes Clapham scored the goal so in that sense, you can say he was a stand out but I never saw the darts forward.

wasn't cory the sandy blonde (ie light ginger) - Clapham was the only bona fide i thought.

anyway - i thought morrison was tidy but for me often passed back or laterally, that dosn't mean he was poor but for me clapham was more posititve in possession.

You didn't offend me at all.

I don't think its personal. If Tom Schwarz lost 10, he would be a standout defender in this league to the point where he would not be in this league. Mario Billen is far too slow and coughed up so much ball and fouled in retaliation, it was not funny. The ACFC fans were saying that Tade has been amazing the last 3-4 weeks. Today he had 5 runs up the left flank and thats it.
By the same token, how many times has Dan Terris played on Kiwitea and yet kicked so much ball out for a goal kick or into the the right hand touch. Kamo.... don't get me started on him. Even Ivan and Pritch told him to get up and stop fucking about. Stu Kelly has never made a tackle in this league and is very much a 'finesse player' ala Jeff Campbell. If Jeff Campbell could tackle, he would have gone so much further and I think the Canty midfield would get a lot more from it if Kelly could at least commit a tackle. Thats where Josh Smith worked so well off Clapham last year cleaning up the tackles in the middle of the field. All the ACFC play came up the left flank. Who was the right back? The Bay Olympic cast off. That was targeted by design.

I thought Clapham played like he was in 1st gear. I'm not sure if ACFC marked him by design but he definitely sat deeper. Whether that was to get out of coverage or by tactical choice but the flip side was had he played in his normal position, there was a massive hole between Kamo and the 18 so when the ball changed possession, had he been there, he would have been able to create havoc. I think Canty got that tactically wrong because the hole there was screamingly obvious. Bawdecker filled it when he came and started going forward with it. I did hear Phil comment from the far side at one point 'You can't complain about not getting signed when you play like that'.

he's far and away the best player in the comp.
draw @ Auckland is a top result for Dragons

Yeah Morrison did. Morrison had 24 on. Mitchell had 14 on. This is Mitchell. As ginger as Clapham.

Although I did agree with some of JV's summation I just don't get the Tade hate as Tade was f*cked over by City's game plan, him only up front and NO left side against a strong defensive side. At least Tade turned up as did Pritch.

Big call that. I would say 'has more influence for his team (except today)' He is 'one of' but Canty definitely notice the difference when he is not playing. Ivan, equally is up there as 'one of' but when is not playing his team do not notice the effect as much. That says more for the personal around Ivan as it does for Clapham.

ok - we are not going to agree on the personal thing = moving on.

I agree that Bilen is over-rated - I'm not sure I would call him a Donkey - but anyhoo.

I thought Tade was pretty good in the first half - probably held onto the ball a tad too much, however most of the second half he wasn't getting much service so he was a bit quiet.

Didn't really notice Terris to be honest - i guess that could be a good thing or a bad thing..

Kamo - don't really see what your talking about here - by your own admission Vicelich and co bitched about everything so can't really take their actions at face value.

Can't disagree about Kelly - but then again in the role he was playing being a tackling machine isn't high on the list of required skills - if he was he could play a little deeper and let Clapham have that role so I get your point there.

Pretty sure Julian colleyt wasn't casted off by Bay Olympic - he just moved to Chch - could be wrong but my memory is that he was rated quite high at Olympic.

Re Clapham - i thought he covered a lot of ground, i noticed him organising the team a lot - telling the lads when to push etc - again I saw some runs in behind from that deep role - often not used but they do stretch the defence.

I think Clapham has become an easy target with that kind of jibe from Phil and to be honest it's pretty low grade banter from him.

With the red card - Bale had a bit of a crack at Clapham after his red - not sure what that was all about, Clapham didn't really make much a big deal about the tackle.

I think the half time change that was made was made with good intentions but poor execution. I guess you *could* say the game plan fucked him but I think it was more the execution of he game plan.

In the 1st half, Tade was on the right flank (our side, the grandstand side). Out on the left, there was acres of space and Iwata and Dickinson were guilty of not making the runs sooner to exploit that cause had they done so, and the ball was switched, then it was all on. In the second half, he was switched over to that side (again, the grandstand side) in an effort to exploit that space but they kept trying to chip it over top in behind for him to run onto rather than stick with what had worked in the first half. Thats not game plan, that execution.

I don't hate Tade. I just think he is a 20 min footballer. The last few weeks, the ACFC folk have been saying how amazing he has been for the whole game. Today, I saw a 20 min footballer.

i was in the grandstand as well (might have sat next to you and not even known it) - i thought in the first half Tade was more central than right.

Edit - come to think of it I sat next to a guy who was a Everton fan and I had to try really hard not to say anything.

As I understood it, Collett was given the archer and went to MAP. Then went to CHR. I could be wrong on that but I am bloody sure he left BO and went to MAP.

Most of Phils banter is low grade but he does have some funny ones at the right time.

I can't remember the foul but I remember thinking 'thats a yellow, clearing out the ball player' and then Bale told the ref to get fucked or something with the word 'fuck' in it and the second yellow was out bloody quick. Kinda dumb with Merko cause he doesn't generally take kindly to backchat. I too saw Bale having words with Clapham on is way off but couldn't quite hear it.

Chopah you have my vote over JV as I don't agree Tade's a 20 min player.

Anyway thank you both for the banter.

I will say that Clapham looks like he has lost a lot of weight - I got quite a shock because it looked quite frightening - like a chemo paitent or something. I kept having images of Christian Bale in The Machinist. Would he be more that 60kgs? He looks bloody ill. It would not hurt him to add a little beef to his frame to help him hold his ground and ride challenges better.

re: Julian.

In addition to Colin Gardyne winning the Golden Boot, the Coach Of the Year deservedly went to Shane Knowles. Ryan Elder, Michael Mayne, Colin Gardyne and Julyan Collett were selected for the AFF All Stars team. Jake Butler, Ross McKenzie and Danny Robinson went to the Waitakere United NZFC squad for the summer. Julyan Collett was selected for the Canterbury NZFC team.

You could be right about MAP but from reading this and from memory he was a valued part of the club.

re: the tackle.. yeah it was a little bit studs up and I thought could be a yellow - I guess Chris thought it wasnt.

i think he said something like - and you, you little c**t and I didn't catch the rest.. Clapham thought that was quite funny.

There was a stint in MAP there I am damn sure of it. Lols on Ryan Elder being in the AS team. Next you'll be telling me Ben Hunt is a national league player..... oh, wait.

Not sure why Bale would T off on Clapham. Clapham said boo to anyone outside his team all game.

I think you get much too personal in some of your player assessments JV but that's just your nature. Overall you gave a relatively fair report on the game. To keep dumping on ACFC performances doesn't do justice to Canterbury's efforts, they were quite literally a match for an albeit depleted City. It was a tight game, as to be expected. Thought Clapham was notable for the way he was prompting players off the ball and was more influential than was obvious.

JV, i'm danny Boys landlord unforunately.

I'm also his coach in the winter, but i must admit that when he first arrived 12 months ago, he was a fat English pussy . But i've been impressed that how lean and fit he is now.

Since he has moved in my kids don't get a look in, when it comes to getting some ice cream, but i'll give him his due he trains hard and is looking fitter and burns it off, and now he is just an English pussy. My wife was upset when you said he looked 10kg overweight, as she is questioning her cooking. I agree her cooking is to do with my large 6 pack not the fact i love a beer or 3.

So don't blame poor Danny Boys( Fanny Girls to his mates). Blame my wife

I don't mean it as a personal attack against the guy at all and as I said none of it is personal or a roast of Canterbury.

Ben Sigmund, good defender for Canty and ACFC. Solid lad but struggled with the speed of the game and lasting 90 mins cause he always cramped up. Went to the Phoenix, lost 10kgs and now look at him.

All I am saying is if those two are in better shape, you'll have a back line that will dominate the league. In fact they may not stay in the league cause there is no doubt they can play (of which I never said they could not)
