I am surprised no one has commented on the quality of the refereeing yesterday.

What an absolutely shocking performance on the following fronts.

1. Earlier on to continuely stop and warn HW players about their fouls and not pull any cards out.

2. To not pull up dubious tackles and shirt pulling by HW players and let play go on and not go back and card or warn players

3. Letting HW players question his calls and show dissent without even a card or a talking to.

4. Letting HW continuely time waste when they had a lead - the classic one is when the keeper feigned an undone boot lace and slowly took his gloves off and then slowly did his boot lace up then slowly put his gloves back on - must have taken a good 5 minutes while we waited for a goal kick.  Lets not get into the players going down for injuries as well.

5. Not talking to a HW player when he kicked the ball away on a CU freekick but instead carding a CU player probably for dissent when HW players had done it all game.

6. Later on carding CU players for lesser fouls commited by HW - this was real frustrating.

7. Not carding HW players when continuely not 10 metres on free kicks but stopping the game to warn them.

8. Continuely stopping the game to warn HW players without reaching into his pocket.

I know it is tough out in the middle but all I ask for is consistency.  When he let HW off earlier on in the game I thought no problem but to card CU for lesser fouls is a shocker.

Did anyone else notice this or was I watching a different game.

Agree with all but number 4. Genuine shoelace from what I could tell. Plus it goes into additional time anyway so no real point whinging about that. Cards could have and probably should have been shown a lot earlier to calm the game down as it was getting very heated. Poor game of football to watch though. No substance, too much rushing, no one controlling tempo. I thought Ogilvie was VERY poor. De Jong had a poor game by his standards, claps lazy defensively. Hoyle not great. Two CB's were good individually though you could tell it was the first time they had played together.

Justice is served.

Looked a bit out of place on the left.  Was free a lot but didn't receive the ball.  Canterbury were driving their attack down the right which kept breaking down in the final third.

Canterbury needed to switch it more to the left and give him more ball.  When he did receive it he looked strong and laid the ball off nicely.  An okay first game.  Could be dangerous in the middle front position - quite a big and strong build with a bit of pace off the mark.

Defence were sitting too deep when they should have pushed up - maybe to combat the speed HW had up front and give them a buffer on the balls pushed through.  This created a huge open mid-field which I reckon Clapham battles with as he has too much back-tracking to defend as HW pushed the ball around.  Then he is lacking/late on attack to help create chances in the final third.  Felix and Colin in the back had strong games and in my opinion were 2 players of the match.

Thought that the televised game vs. Tasman last weekend was very entertaining though with the six goals.

The Anglo-Ghanaian striker Tieku is good value. Lovemore was very sharp. Former All White Paine is playing well.

Good defence with Hobbs, Adams, Kurimata and Blake.

Suburbs are a decent side and playing considerably better than the Dragons.

Dont know what game you were watching but Tieku is injured and didnt play. Tim Payne had an awful game, getting caught in possession so many times I lost count and gave the ball away even more! Yes the defence is solid but continually just hit long balls to nobody!

The game was entertaioning because Tasman managed to equalise twice but the actual standard of football was terrible

Yeah, but "terrible" by what standards?

Terrible by English Premier League standards but not by Sterling Sports Premiership standards.

The standard of football we've been seeing at English Park hasn't been great this season.

But this is NZ so what do you expect?

Canterbury have been very average in all their home games so far starting with the opening draw vs. Tasman.

To me, that suburbs v Tasman game on the tele was one of the more entertaining - standards are in the eye of the beholder...

I realise that Tieku was injured last weekend - what I meant was in previous games.

I agree about Tieku. He is a very good player.

'Standards'? basic football I suppose. Suburbs were played off the park by Hamilton a few weeks ago! (who actually played very good football) I would simply like to see them pass the ball to each other now and again.

Doesnt matter if its NZ it really isnt that hard to try to pass the ball to each other! Hamilton do it, Auckland certainly do.

There are plenty of good skilful players in the Suburbs set up who must be getting neck ache watching the ball go over their head time and again!

I have watched the game twice now, at the ground and on TV. Pretty much every time the centre backs get the ball they knock to each other a few times and then, instead of midfielders dropping in to pick it up or playing a ball to a midfielders feet, they hit it long for sean lovemore to chase!

This is a good tactic occassionally.... not every time! especially when the long ball is not a very good one and always seems to go straight to the opposition!

Seems to be a good tattic as they currently sit top of the table.  Remember footbsall is about winning not looking pretty.

Win at any cost eh! Trouble is when you continually give the ball away you will get punished as Hamilton Wanderers showed when they won 4-0. We have been lucky against Southern, Tasman and Hawkes Bay as none of them could finish their chances, otherwise it might be a totally different story and we certainly wouldn't be sitting at the top of the league!

Yes win at any cost, exactly.  (well within the laws of the game)  Don't forget in those games Suburbs missed plenty of chances also.  So maybe they could have been routs.  As a fan I personally enjoy winning games over playing pretty football.  In saying that I'm also well aware that the trend is now to favour passing football over winning matches so I accept I may be minority.

Yes really need at least 4 points from our next two games, Eastern Suburbs and then away to Team Wellington, before the Christmas / New Year break, or the play-offs could be gone.

Solid performance from Canterbury today.  Back four held their own.  Aaron Spain was my Man of the Match at right back - shows a lot of potential and still so young.  Good to see Clapham push higher.  Also good to see Canterbury using the width of the pitch and not persist with the right attack when not working.  Great effort - looks like things are coming together especially against a good side today.

De Jong had a fabulous game (was all over the park) and scored a fantastic goal - one of the best in the past few years.

Well done Willy and the team!

Spain has started at right back twice now I think, the first being in the opening game. He had a super game yesterday (no bias there)

I thought Messenger was playing centre back in the first few games anyways, not right back.

From The Press: Aaron Spain PNG International? / Team Wellington Preview

Looks certain that Aaron Spain will become a PNG international - the PNG national coach was in Auckland to watch Canterbury play Waitakere a few weeks ago and talked to Aaron about playing for PNG after the game.

Having potentially three PNG internationals in the side (if Dabingyaba returns from his trial in Malaysia) will severely impact the Dragons towards the end of the season.

PNG have two World Cup qualifiers on March 20 and March 27 which means our PNG internationals would miss Canterbury United's last game of the regular season on March 19 and the semi-final of the league if they make it on 25/26 March.

As far as the two Canterbury United players currently trialing overseas, I agree with letting Messenger go for a trial because he's been with the club more than one season and is a Kiwi player.

However, I strongly disagree with letting PNG international striker Dabingyaba go for a trail in Malaysia after only two games for the Dragons. A foreign player should be held to his contact for the full season and only released at season's end.

The Dragons must have spent thousands of dollars on bringing Dabingyaba here in travel and accommodation etc. and to me it's not good enough that he's released to trial after only two games. Maybe though, he could be released to trial on the understanding that he can only sign for the foreign club at the end of our season.

Kiwi players should be allowed to transfer to overseas clubs after one season with the Dragons or something like that..

Good international exposure!
