Pretty sure this is around the same out of towners as last year which was not the problem, last year it was the coaching etc
C'mon, it sure made for some amazing sideline entertainment!

There was no conspiracy more the fact that Willy stated in the press he would select the best performers in the region.
He has done this with no scouting/watching games and anyone who watched games regularly here then you would have
O Brian ,Kelly ,Knight,White, Highfield,Barton you then have other performers like Mike Forshaw and Mark Peers at Ferrymead and maybe Dan Ede and Cash Techs top goal scorer Oxley.
If you were scouting players you would not select Meysum and Spain or the boy from Halswell as they cant even play every week for these clubs the 2 Western players Andre has good pace but like Jacob are ok MPL players never mind ASB level.
So why are the best performing players in town not being selected and players that cant play each week for their MPL teams are??
The defense apart from Tom Swartz will struggle to be fit all season Colett and Terris injured on off all MPL season and Dan Swartz struggles to complete 90 mins each week,Boys missed most of the season and is the biggest piss head in town.
As for the out of towners as i have said before look at the list above, they are not needed and not better it seems Willy had already chosen players to bring in with out preparing/scouting here first then has made false statements to why kelly,o brian and knight etc are not selected.
Top 4 is always a possibility given the league size but you are not going to compete with the big boys selecting players that can not play week in and out for thier MPL clubs
Understand that Liam Oxley 'trialed' but missed out and Dan Ede is currently injured, not doubt Dan will comment on this.
Yes AW82 slight injury from training with the youth squad. Back in a couple of weeks
that's nearly a third of the squad that are being fully funded from out of town in an amateur league while players like o'brien, knight, kelly, barton, moya, etc are not included
and i think that those bought in will need to improve significantly in order to bring something superior to what could otherwise be offered by the players on that absent list
that said, it looks like a decent squad with enough quality to be competitive
What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?
would there be a chance he will double up as a player as well? his clearance has come through

I met Jesse at the Mainland Football office last week when I went to get my season pass.
Nice bloke.
He will play for the team and work in the office during the week.
He came out here initially just to work for Canterbury United in marketing etc. as the practical component of his sports marketing degree (studying in Amsterdam).
But he's also a decent player at semi-pro level in the Netherlands and made appearances for VV Katwijk when they won the Dutch third division and promotion to the second division in 2012-13.
Katwijk opted not to enter the second division for financial reasons though (felt they weren't ready for it administratively).
Otherwise he would have been a Dutch second division player.

Article from Nelson Mail about Nelson Suburbs' Solomons u-20 international Atkin Kaua signing for Canterbury United:
Has been a boarder at Nelson College for a few years and won the NZ secondary schools championship with Nelson College this year.
Quite an old schoolboy at 19 years!
I went to Nelson College in the late '70's - early '80's.
There was one Pacific Islander in the whole school (Ivan Tamatea, who I knew) and few Maoris either.
Throughout my time at Nelson College (had about 1000 students there) I had not one Pacific Islander or Maori in my class.
Ivan Tamatea, the sole Pacific Islander, a lovely happy-go-lucky bloke whose sense of humour I still remember, was found dead on the edge of the school grounds one day , having inhaled fumes from a fire extinguisher (apparently you can get high that way).
He'd been like a fish out of water amidst the school's stern discipline and antiquated English public school vibe (we had to sing the "Eton Rugby Song" etc. and the headmaster would spend much of his time patrolling the corridors inspecting boys' uniforms)
Hence, after much soul searching the school decide to offer scholarships to students from the Pacific Islands.
Many rugby players, but also talented footballers (mostly from the Solomon Islands) like Henry Fa'arodo and Atkin Kaua.

Nice one (again!) BP
I remember at Outward Bound early seventies we had to sing in unison in the showers if we wanted hot water and we chose the 'Chesdale cheese' song from the advt. - as it was the only one we boys all knew. "We are the boys from Chesdale, we really know our cheese..." etc. etc. The louder we sang the hotter the water. V public school wot?
"At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive...
I'll take my chance because luck is on my side or something...
Her name is Rio, she don't need to understand...
Oh Rio, Rio, hear them shout across the land..."
to be fair to fanny girls he doesn't drink much so I don't know where you get him being the biggest piss head in town.
Although when he has a cider he's a freaking nightmare , but a fun nightmare (sometimes) that when he changes from Danny Boys to Fanny girls.
As he works and lives with me I can vouch that he is working his ass off to be fit for Canterbury. And by all accounts what I've heard so far is Wily has been tremendous and created a good culture which the players are enjoying .
Like every coach I'd like to see more of our players ,tech players in it,but really looking forward to getting behind them

Stand (naked & dry ) corrected. Well it was a long time ago.

Lucky you didn't sing the "Eton Boating Song" in the shower (the whole of Nelson College had to sing it at assemblies)
That would have been embarrassing:
"Swing, swing together with your bodies between your knees...
....Nothing in life shall sever the chain that is round us now.."
I just refreshed my memory on the lyrics online:

Hugh Laurie sang a verse on "Inside the Actor's Studio" before cracking up and commenting on the homo-eroticism.

That's a woot! from me - match report anyone?
What's sight without sound? Love without peace? Copulation without conception?
Match report will say something like 'in spite of the out of town coach and players, CU gained a credible pre season draw against a class outfit due to the graft, toil and sweat of world class Christchurch footballers'
Grumpy old bastard alert
Thanks Jeff, if it's on here then I'll know it's true :)

Nothing like being portrayed as a bunch of insular, parochial " i hate jonny foreign trousers"eh? Now, where'd you put the banjo Cletus...
"Self-defence is an art I cultivate"
not a bad result, but things will be much tougher away from home at english park
ACFC view
First half started frenetically, ACFC held their shape well and Canty were chasing the ball around. No real chances until De Vries scored. Hudson-Wihongi looks to be playing the big man holding midfielder, he's got the size and mobility for it. Lea'alafa is lively as well, although I get the idea he's going to be frustrating.
7 for Canterbury was a pest, up and down the wing all day and giving Iwata and Kim trouble. Gerdsen had obviously noted the diminutive nature of the city full backs and targeted balls across field to them.
In the second half, Canterbury deserved their equaliser and the one that put them in front. Clapham came on and led from the front, the back, the sides, underneath and everywhere else. They switched to a high pressing game and it completely disrupted City, very effective tactical switch.
Oglive's goal was, well, weird. The lino signalled, but then didn't and the CU players celebrated but then didn't but then it was a goal anyway. No arguments about the other one though. Good play, patient work and lots of energy.
The Den Heijer equaliser had a lot of luck. Free kick in, headed onto the post by Mikey and it caught your keeper in the back of the head and went in. Jammier than an overfilled doughnut, but they all count.
Canterbury looked good, impressed with the switch in approach in the second half.

That's if we still have a Phoenix to watch...

Canterbury Utd Facebook on November 6 said they still had a small number left.
Best way to keep up to date with such things is to check Canterbury Utd's Facebook:
https://www.facebook.com/CanterburyUnitedDragons/
They've had some open training sessions recently which supporters have been invited to with free team posters and flags given out.
They also post links to articles about Canterbury Utd, have the youth team results etc.
Canterbury Youth had its first loss on the weekend to Auckland City youth 2-3 at English Park.
Canterbury Utd also have a new official You Tube channel with interviews etc.:

The promotion of Canterbury United has already been very good this season.
There are even ads on the sides of buses around town:
