Apologies. This wasn't meant to be my first post - I had seen the comments on the short-lived Apollon club last week and had set up an account to give some info re Evening Post articles that I had from Barry Smith about the 1954 incident but got sidetracked when I saw your comment about no 0-0 draws.

While the numbers didn't match what I had, the gist of your point is correct in that Miramar still are well on top in the overall stats. Given the current rivalry it is odd to think that in the first 34 seasons of Olympic's existence (1959-1992) they only played 3 matches against Miramar (they had played the Miramar Reserves side a dozen times over that time). Until 1993 the teams were only in the same league once, both in Central One in 1978 ... but Olympic (still known as CYFC) were relegated that season and Miramar were in National League by the time Olympic were promoted back to Central One .

I have now posted in the new thread what I meant to in the first place re Apollon and my suggestions for where to look for old info.

Predictions for this weekends games:

Western Suburbs vs Napier City Rovers
The first of two huge games in CL this weekend. Suburbs coming off the back of a gritty win in the cup, Rovers blowing past IBU and then Wharfies in three days. Wests have been very good at home (aside from the Olympic game which they arguably should have won) while Rovers looked very good in their one loss away from home to Rangers. I'm picking Rovers to win this one but it'll be a close game whichever way it goes.

Waterside Karori vs Island Bay United
Wharfies struggling this season, one of the sides that are lucky there's no relegation. Tough loss on Monday away to Rovers but they have struggled all season. Island Bay doing well this year in 5th behind the big 4, and coming off a good win over Nix ressies in Chatham Cup. Leaning towards Island Bay getting the win here.

Upper Hutt City vs Petone
Both teams' form has been up and down, Petone getting a win against Greytown, while Upper Hutt struggled away to Seatoun and lost out on pens in the cupset of the round. Picking Petone to get the win and kick start a bit of form for them.

Wellington Olympic vs Miramar Rangers
The second huge clash this weekend, the sides met only a week ago in the cup with Rangers sneaking the win. Olympic will come out firing in an attempt to win back some pride but I think this one will end in a draw.

FC Western vs Wellington Phoenix
FC Western still looking for their first points of the campaign. They've only scored 4 goals this year so far as well. Weenix to get the win but could be a bit closer as Western continue to adjust to the level of the league.

Cracking game out at endeavour park so far! NCR 2-1 up at the break, nice volley from Schofield put them ahead just before HT. Really nice goal earlier from Marlow-Jones for Wests, fearless running at the defence and turning every which way.

It's a close game - Napier look stronger physically but Wests showing good movement and unpredictability on transition.

3-3 it ends - crazy second half. Not really a result that helps either a team but an enthralling game! Napier looked in control, made it 3-1 from a set piece, then lost the ascendancy completely as Wests roared by the home crowd scored two in quick succession!

Pandemonium for the remaining 20ish mins of the game - tackles flying everywhere, yellow cards, Napier hit the post, Wests had a disallowed goal, ended what was probably a deserved draw.

Top spot up for grabs later at Wakefield...

And another draw... this league could really go down to the wire! Olympic, Napier, Miramar all level on points, Wests a couple behind as they're the only team to drop points against the bottom six.

If form keeps up against the bottom six teams this could be so tight!

Worth noting btw - Wests are finished with home games against the top 4 and still have to do Miramar and Olympic away and... Napier are finished with away games and still get to host those two!

Upper Hutt beat Petone with two well taken second half goals.

Petone seemed to have the better of possession and quality apart from in the attacking third.  UH defended their box well.

Petone bench seemed to waste a lot of energy riding the refs in the last 10 minutes. One yellow card against them that could easily have been red had claims from the bench that it was not even a foul.  Reaction of players around the incident suggested it was very naughty.

Referee though did seem to allow the UH keeper to get away with blue murder when it came time wasting

What's the deal with Petone at the moment? I've only seen them once against Napier and they weren't too shabby in that game, but form seems terrible

Good for the region, and the Central League as well.

Can't comment on whole game as had to leave before the end of the first half, but that was absolutely terrible for the WeeNix though. Felt to me a bit as though they expected to walk it...

Never particularly thrilled when the Nix lose but in this case I'm just happy Western picked up the win! This whole season so far has felt like a demonstration of the gap between CL and everyone else, so for Western to pick up a win is great. Hopefully they can pick up a few more.

On other hand though poor from the Weenix. If they're gonna play NL next year they'll need to do better than that or people are going to rightfully ask questions

I think it's not such a surprising game for an inexperienced young team to lose to be honest.

Only two points seperating the top 4 and four goals seperating the top 3

How do you think Petone are feeling heading into the Cup this weekend against Seatoun. Seatoun were 3-1 up over UH last week and eventually won on penalties. Petone lost twice to UH, and now have to play the 8th placed CL2 team. Interesting game loading…..

Back on this week!

The big game is Olympic vs Wests. Word on the street is Olympic may have strengthened with some new faces: the Supyks brothers and another name from The OFC (can’t remember).

If true, I suspect they will be too strong for Wests

Also some other movements:

Albie Frances-Alles to Karori
MJ Des Tombes to IBU
Xavier Coleman to Petone

Few boys back from College at FC Western

Maybe a new OFC player showing up at Miramar (Ingham)

saw Albie back at Karori. Good to see
Xavier obviously not happy with the playing time at Wests, mainly being used off the bench

Couple of wild results:

Karori getting hammered 6-0
FC Western drawing with Wests.
Olympic losing.

Keeps it exciting. Napier doing the double over Olympic

Wow! Olympic might not win the league after all. Miramar and Napier play each other round 17, so that could be the decider if things continue as is. Honestly though, the things that happen when you stop paying attention for 1 second to watch the world cup

Qualification race probably over then for Wests. Could still pose a challenge for Miramar though in the reverse fixture (which they won at home).

Be hard for Wests from here huh. Think they needed to finish above Napier to qualify for national league.

Maybe in the end of an era at Olympic? I see they’ve signed Jayden Rodwell from the OFC. I understand Miramar has someone lined up as well. Owen Smith I’m guessing?

I wouldn't go as far as to say it's the end of an era for Olympic just yet. Not winning a 6th title in a row doesn't neccassarily mean it's all coming to an end, for all we know so far it's just a hiccup. Looking at their squad they have a number of younger guys coming through so they'll probably remain relevant for a few more years, plus, being in the winter national league should give them a better ability to sign players.

That said, the OPL could have an impact on big clubs ability to remain at the top long-term, so that might be something to look out for.

Agree on the last part. It'll take 2-3 years to see the impact for a CF club like Olympic.

AFC and the OFC Pro League has taken a lot of positives out of ACFC in two years and it'll be interesting to see what the central league/national league will be like in 3-5 years.

Looking at the match Stats, Olympic had 5 yellows and a straight red so discipline would have been a contributing factor in their loss

A lot of it was dissent, coaches got a few yellows as well. The red was a very strong challenge but from where I was sitting it looked like he got the ball and tried to keep his studs down (I've played in games this ref has done before and he is quick with the cards and can be frustrating to have a conversation with, likes to stamp his authority where possible). Olympic could have snuck an equaliser on a few occasions in the final 10 minutes but it just wouldn't fall for them.

Rovers were worth the win tbf, Olympic still look dangerous but this one just snuck away from them in a few key moments.

Never mind what I said, just found a replay of the challenge. Straight leg, over the top of the ball, studs up and into the ankle of Cam Emerson.

Sounds like Olympic were denied a clear penalty late on. Haven't seen the footage though.

Yeah it looked like a clear penalty for the challenge on Jack. It seems like that ref has been in charge for every Napier home game this year which I find odd…

Not as clear a penalty as the one Wests should have got against Olympic the week before. I think most will agree that Olympic get the rub of the green more often than not....so at best swings and roundabouts. Also not correct that this ref has been in charge for every Napier home game.....half of them at best which is not surprising given he lives in the Hawkes Bay.

I have seen a short video of the keeper absolutely cleaning out JHS just before the defender saved it off the line. On another day I’m assuming that keeper gets a red and gives away a pen.

Meh!

FC Western picking up points again. Man, the Nix are in for a tough time at National if they keep this squad

In their defence they were down a few of their usual players (Jack Clegg and Ben Trenberth on U16 duty, Dylan Gardiner not available, and Ryan Lee on limited minutes returning from injury). But your point still stands - they were lucky to get that last-gasp equaliser.

Edit: And I've just read that we've lost Charlie Hale to AFC Reserves as well, which isn't great news for us.

To be fairResrves had the better of the game and had a bunch of chances they just couldn't convert and FC Western's goal was a bit freakish and against the run of play.  Not surprising they struggled to convert as those that have mainly played in attack this year not there for various reasons.  They could have done with Charlie Hale.
