Maybe people were too quick to write off the Greeks? They’ve strengthened themselves before the windows closed and have a sweet finish to the season having played all the top four teams twice.
I would like to see someone else win
In the 21 completed seasons to date since the Central League was reformed in 2005 there have only been 4 different winners ...
7 titles - Olympic (2010, 2016, 2021-25)
6 titles - Miramar Rangers (2006, 2008, 2011, 2013-14, 2020)
5 titles - Western Suburbs (2005, 2007, 2009, 2017, 2019)
3 titles - Napier City Rovers (2012, 2015, 2018)
that trend should continue in 2026 (UHC should be eliminated mathematically at the weekend leaving the title to be fought out between the usual suspects).
Those same 4 sides have also finished runners up in 17 of those 21 seasons - the only teams to break the trend were Petone in 2008, Wairarapa United in 2015 and 2017 and WPR in 2023 although in the end none were anywhere close to the top spot - Petone 8 points behind Miramar, Wairarapa 10 and 7 points behind NCR and Wests respectively and WPR 9 points behind Olympic.
Wairarapa have been the most consistent challengers to the top four teams - between 2010 and 2017 they had 2 second places, 4 third places, a fourth place and a seventh place.
