I can confirm Tasman gets 1000 a game and last year got 2500 to a couple. The problem with TV is that the camera is on teh main stand and projects to the other empty stand.

That's a decent number of fans, and the team isn't even doing all that well! Is the club doing things to promote the team? Or is it just a very footy oriented location?

Nelson has always had good attendance with sports, the Giants and Mako are also pretty well attended. Definitely a passionate sporting city as a whole and the whole local football community has really got together to help with TU, clubs who used to feud pretty badly now cooperating for the benefit of football in the region.

From the size of the televised crowd, I'd doubt it. I would say ACFC gets 150-200

I'd guess more about 400 for Auckland, only a portion of the fans attending sit in the grandstand, they're scattered all around the pitch

The other thing to remember about the fabled 80s was that not all clubs got big crowds. I went to games every Sunday in Auckland and most games had crowds less than 1000, at any one of North Shore, Mt Wellington, Papatoetoe, Manurewa, University etc. There were definitely games where attendance spiked, eg when the likes of Brooking and Mariner played, plus the odd crunch match.

As Doloras pointed out elsewhere,  virtually all games were played on Sunday when no shops were open, there was 2 tv channels and essentially nothing else to do.

Some stats I've picked up over time from NZ Soccer Annuals and newspapers

showing Average crowds for National League

1971 (2nd year, 10 teams - Listed in finishing position)

1 Eastern Suburbs 1274

2 Mt Wellington 1769

3 Christchurch United 1283

4 Blockhouse Bay 1274

5 Gisborne City 679

6 Dunedin Suburbs unknown

7 Mt Albert-Ponsonby 845

8 Stop Out 662

9 Wellington City 822

10 Western Suburbs 946

by 1980 they had 12 teams but attendances had dropped

1 Mt Wellington 1147

2 Gisborne City 1927

3 Manurewa 975

4 WDU 521

5 North Shore United 530

6 Dunedin City 453

7 Christchurch United 618

8 Hamilton 569

9 Rangers 773

10 Stop Out 464

11 Blockhouse Bay 521

12 Nelson United 548

I had some stats for the early years of the NZFC but can't find them although from memory Auckland City were best attended with around 1500 average while Southern (or Otago United as they were) struggled to get 100.

Until they expanded the NZFC the record crowd was 2500 for Canterbury United v Team Wellington - a game which was played in Nelson!

In its programme against Trans Tours United on August 6, 1978, Hamilton AFC took the rare step of publicising the official attendance figures for all national league for the 1977 season. (Hamilton's season aggregate attendance of 8170 was the third highest in the league and it reported the single highest match attendance for all clubs, of 1455 versus Mt Wellington.)

Napier City rovers first year in the National League was 1982. Played at Nelson Park - had a small temporary grandstand and I remember volunteers having to erect a para pool type structure to shield off the ground. Shifted to Park Island in 1985 I think and to current stadium the year after.

with regards to Blockhouse Bay think they might have been playing at Western Springs in 1977 ?

They also hadn’t been around as a club very long at that stage either. Sometime around 1973 Napier City (blue and white) merged with Napier Rovers (black and white). Obviously in an attempt to beat the mighty Leopard United of Hastings lol

Pretty much all Auckland games were played at Newmarket Park until 1979 when it subsided. Blockhouse were based at Whitney St for a while (now home to Bay Roskill rugby league)

Blockhouse Bay ground was further up Whitney St not the league ground.  Housing development now round about time they merged into Bay Olympic?

So, despite the well publicised financial issues, the franchise entered into arrangements that they clearly could not honor

Another player gone, Anders Erikkson (Sweden) returned home. That makes it 2 defenders left after Joe zupo left a couple weeks back.Only really leaves Cam Lindsay at the back.Could slot Dan Allan in CB thats if he stays around although he has been pretty decent playing in the the holding mid feild role

That's disgraceful. However, we have Waitak in the same boat and Team Wellington has been saved by qualifying for the World Club Champs.

Also we have Central League Clubs showing large loses.

Non Profit - It’s a fine line between + n - on that One. Key is who are the creditors n generally most are club folk. ?

interesting to see that the mainland federation have a player levy $16 per senior player to fund Canterbury United... who are running at a loss as well.  Are the pitch forks out down there?

I would have no problem with a levy on players/clubs if HBU were then contracted to have x number of local players in the squad/ playing XI. Of course there would need to be some strict definitions of who a local player is, but as it stands it’s not fair that the locals are funding the team and they are not too worried where the players come from. There will be arguments that the locals aren’t good enough - well give it time an$ the right frame of mind and they should be.

That is interesting. Do that charge that to all players, or only Canterbury based ones.

If all players, I'd be very interested to hear how Neilson based players feel about 16 bucks of their fees being earmarked for CU when they have Tasman based in the paddock over the back fence.

If my memory is correct (and there are a few doubts these days), the levy was brought in by Mainland when the Franchise League was first introduced and was for the Clubs and players in the old Canterbury FA region only.

Brings to mind the flogging a dead horse.  How long can it go on.  Can New Zealand Football not see the damage they are doing encouraging this.  How long will Central Football keep propping them up.  At the Annual General Meeting it was disclosed that an extra $10k has gone from Central to Hawkes Bay United as well as the $20k donation.  Talk about a bottomless pit.
