Hah, more like ACFC held a gun to SU's head, & it was NZF that gave them the gun. Surely NZF should be taking responsibility for ensuring the integrity of the competition, rather than dumping responsibility on other sides...

To be honest SU probably have more to gain from the rescheduled fixture anyway.

Not sure there was any gun. What could possibly happen to SU if they said no?

So Eric Molloy (undoubtedly the best of the imports) is off to Tech and sounds like at least a couple of the others are playing for Caversham... Seems like a massive missed opportunity for the league... why not get these lads strengthening the GI's & Northerns instead??? Instead, the gap between teams is only going to get bigger...

Source?

Hate to break it to you, even after offering him a house & car Molloy still didn't want to play for Mosgiel.

Not really the answer i was looking for, so no source then?

Few half wits on here. Couple of the Irish lads will head out of town and the rest won't play

Well all six are employed by football south and permanent employees (long serving) were made redundant to clear space for them. If they aren't going to stick around there will be egg on the faces of Wright and O'Reilly. To the earlier poster who said football south can't really tell them where to play I don't actually believe that. Surely there would be an understanding they would improve our football more by making it more competitive and playing for the smaller clubs. Missed trick if that does happen.

Seamus Gray has joined BNU in Wgtn. From Northern. Any good?

Stood out as one of the better players in a very average side. Scored a couple of good goals from att mid. But would drift out of games, and a very slight lad.

The winter season is getting closer and closer, anyone heard of any new signings for those not in town to keep up with the play?

Rahan, Matt and Liam all out for Mosgiel as well as Brook, will leave a lot of holes to fill

Permalink Permalink
about 9 years ago · edited about 5 years ago · History

they will be pushing hard to recruit some players from other clubs then surely?

Gunners that makes zero sense

Waterboy you only have yourself and your teammates from the past 2 years to thank for any banter directed your way. In my opinion you don't get enough considering the utter nonsense you dispelled during those respective seasons; seasons where your mouth did a lot of taking however your performance failed to convince. As for Gunner, his statement makes perfect sense.

Haha, got stuck in, put in a few good performances and disrupted the status quo which no one liked. It's either that or we all let Caversham get every half decent player that comes down and dominate every year. 3rd the last two seasons isn't good enough but we did enough to send some tremors and we will continue to do so. So send all the banter you want Kennedy

GI will offer nothing again this year, too many young pretenders out there to mount a serious challenge for any game. Northern are in tatters and will again struggle. Personally I cant wait to see Queenstown back in the fold, they always have a few decent imports at the start of the year and can be dangerous and Jamie Whitmarsh is always a good coach who has teams playing well. Tech and Cavvy will again be the top 2 teams, winning is a habit and they have done it for years. Roslyn will be much the same as Mosgiel all huff and puff but far too inconsistent to mount a serious challenge. As for Invercargill, who knows could be good could be hopeless I am going fo rthe latter.

Be good to see a more competitive premier league this season. Must be an empty feeling for cavy winning a one horse race every year. Surely they want to test themselves.

Probably so but which teams actually have the systems and recruitment abilities to make a challenge?

Don't varsity get the pick of a couple hundred odd at the start of every year? Surely you could train 11 of them into a good side

would they be organised enough to do something with them thou? perhaps if they got their act together and got the uni on board.

If Northern had half a brain they'd get a few

You'd think they do have the Uni on board, with the FS / Uni scholarship winners being required to play for Uni. But that is as far as the relationship with the Uni goes.

Funnily enough I was informed that scholarship recipients actually do not necessarily have to play for Uni, which I found surprising...

I more meant the University as an entity rather than the varsity team. If the University came on board that's a lot of resources in specialist departments that nobody could hope to match and they've started to sponsor rugby and rowing where it helps the reputation so could the varsity team get more support?

The uni team in the Mainland league has a close relationship to the university when it comes to scholarships, coaching students, performance analysis etc. perhaps Otago could find the same sort of partnership?

Justice is served.

That is interesting, as we were informed by the CEO that they were going to have to play for Uni. If they have changed their stance, then they have finally seen that a FS endorsed scholarship shouldn't have those types of restraints. But if find it unlikely, as they were pretty certain it was all fine.

apparently they don't have to play for varsity, nor do they in fact need to play at all.

Permalink Permalink

If that is the case then what is the point of the schol? Surely they should have to sign with them, otherwise you will end up with the same old story of cavy and tech eating up the fresh out of town talent. On that note, what is happening with these Irish lads? cavy, tech and roslyn snapping them up? or will FS have a brain and say they need to go to a lesser club and help make the competition a more even playing field. They are paying them, so surely they could have some sway on who they play for.

Permalink Permalink

The inference cavy always win because they take all the 'fresh talent' is exactly why you/your club hasn't won anything. Cavy compete just like everyone else for players and don't necessarily have first pick or get the best. Look at Mosgiel over the last couple years, couldn't shut them up about all the players they signed and that they had the best players and played the better football? So why didn't they win? Don't simplify it to cavy having all the best players; that's weak and just excuses. They're obviously doing something with the guys that go there and whatever it is those other clubs should be paying attention and try to emulate. Otherwise they'll win again next year, simple.

I have nothing against it, success breads success. If a club has been on top for a long time of course they will have a little more pulling power but you are spot on. Other clubs need to take a long hard look at themselves and see what they can do to challenge for a title. Cavy seem to have set the standard for players in the club to work at, which looks a lot higher than others around town.

Nobody can really argue against this. If varsity are the best place to be creating a competitive alternative to playing for Cavvy then someone better sort the place out so it offers a real option.

Permalink Permalink

Every club has the potential to match Cavy. It's not like there is a gulf in budgets or a step up in league. My argument is the Irish should be asked to play for the other clubs to give them more of an idea of how to train and how to manage themselves.

Any suggestion Irish players are going to cavy is rubbish. Both Tech and Mosgiel have offered them certain roles however from my understanding only 1 or 2 will be playing winter league and not sure where at this stage.
