I would have thought that Tech and Roslyn would have been the two options for the Irish lads to be fair, Terry will no doubt be talking the ear off a number of them while Tech will throw some coin around surely. Hopefully it will make for an interesting and exciting league this year. How are teams shaping up anyone know?

Tech do not throw cash around for any players. They are not like Cavy (have been in the past).

That was long time ago Tekkers, think Green Island are forking out money this season but doing it all wrong, paying those young Southland kids so they don't go back to play for Spirit haha

There should be no $$ thrown in this league period. It's not sustainable and there would be very few players worth it. Would be very surprised if a club was willing to shell out $$ - especially on youth players - that would be financial suicide.

GI splashed the $$$ to youth players last season

It would pretty naive to think that there isn't some money being given to players or at the very least they won't be paying subs and will be getting given club clothing and equipment.

Bang on! been happening for years. You think Eder was at Mosgiel for the football????

Eder had a job which was why he played for Mosgiel - organised through the club. Paying players to play is infinitely different to not having to pay fees/subs and getting gear. I have only ever played for two first teams where fees were paid at that level and it was a matter of principle over a necessity. One of the perks of playing first team + boots/gloves. Bit different to signing a contract and getting a cheque for 'coaching and travel' each season season. Even a win bonus is pretty standard for most clubs up north - but wouldn't expect to see it down here. Still maintain that players down here shouldn't get that $$ - poor investment.

Players anywhere shouldn't get it.  Not at regional football level.

Every few weeks in this thread this rears its head. I'm sure in the past some $$ would be given out but can't see it being the case these days. All clubs lodge their accounts for public view and everything has to be itemised and coded to keep their inc soc status. It's clear from those accounts that coaching fees are paid but we all know coaches all tend to get some form of reimbursement.obviously there are still ways to pay I.e cash but I don't think it would be too prevalent.

I'm crying... what clubs in Dunedin don't offer their first team free subs?

I highly doubt that Varsity have the financial might to write off $2.5 k from their accounts?

Just for all the fans out there wondering, Tech get player sponsors to cover subs

A very smart and reasonable approach. I think its the clubs who simply double down on subs from other players in the club to cover prems teams that aren't operating in a financially prudent way.

Yeah and Fridge was judged on his second season when it all turned to shiite.  So your point is what?  Give O'Reilly a second term?

All depends whether the Irish stay. If they go the season was a failure. If they stay it is a success. FS let some good staff go to accommodate these guys so if they leave it will be a real kick in the face for the community here.

When you compare the first seasons of both, the level of financial backing and optimism is very different. O'Reilly should be expected to do a lot more next season.

Who were the "good staff"?

Wayne Gray had a huge hand in growing futsal in the region. Tracy Fleet was indispensable for anyone trying to do stuff in the lower leagues.

I thought it was far fetched also, would mean they would have to leave their FDO roles which would be a massive slap in the face for FS.

Not that far fetched as Auckland clubs have been in contact with other SU players over the last couple of seasons to move for winter  football.

Paid weekly to play with sign on fee and on win bonus, flat sorted, job sorted, no -temp days etc.  Oh hang on having a run out for Mosgiel. What would you pick.

This was same format [job and house not req'd] to what CS [chch] had on the table for a SU player to sign for 2017.

Maybe they have signed for CS, transfer day will tell.
