I think Nathan Gunn is easily one of the best defenders in the league, just because someone plays National Leafue for Otago doesn't automatically make them a better player.

Not gonna pick you up on your errors re Dugdale etc Yeovil; others have, and it would be trite if I did as well.  Plus yours is an intelligent voice and one we don't hear enough of - I like what you say, please visit us more.  But let me say this, playing National League doesn't mean a guy is a better player at the SELECTION stage, but once they get 20 or so games under their belt, that makes them invaluable IMO - and a MUCH better player in most cases,  Take young Matt Joy for example.  A bit of a donkey a couple of years back IMO - potential yes, anyone could see that.  But just look at him now with the National League experience he has got under his belt. I think my comments relate especially to centre backs like him, where experience is more critical than perhaps every other position other than goalkeeper.

I agree, a substantial amount of time playing at a higher level always almost always improves you. In fact I think it is a key to player development. Matt Joy is a great example, there are plenty of other examples of guys that have really kicked on, guys like Tom Connor, Harley Rodeka and Regan Coldicott recently.

My point is that just because someone plays National League they are not automatically a better player (although generally this is true). This isn't based upon this season as much as previous years when guys like Kris Wheeler, Burgee, Judda16, Scoullar, Ritchie Smith and Boylan were among the best in the SPL but didn't play National Lge (although all part from Wheeler played Nat Lge). I was thinking of the previous posts where dream SPL teams were mooted for Otago but were never going to happen in reality.

For example Kris Wheeler is easily one of the best midfielders I've seen in the SPL but I don't think he's ever played National Lge, I've already mentioned Nathan Gunn who IMO is better than plenty of guys who have played for Otago, Tim Mather was one of the best players in the SPL but hasn't played National League

Roslyn vs Mosgiel, what a game to start the season, will have to go with Roslyn on this one

Curtis to Roslyn! Think this will prove to be one of the best summer signings... Mosgiel have really messed that one up

Braes vs tech should be a great goal fest. Tech will be dominant in this one!!. Lost a sack of players so will see if they get off bottom this year.

Even early on this game has all the tell-tale signs of a relegation dogfight!

while i think tech will struggle (rebuilding year), they should win this one, mosgiel & tech have tough starts over the first 5 games

Tim Mather was crap.Well behind Coburn,Kelly,Deeley,Chisom who were playing in his position for Otago at the time

I think Mather was better than James Reichwein, Nathan Knox, Paul Seaman, Phil Ruggles, Tom Sadd and Ryan Fachnie when they were playing for Otago and he was here. If he was available and I was taking Otago I'd have him in the squad now as well.

Mather way too slow for National league, M Cunningham made him look half decent at Roslyn

Nathan Knox was miles better, Sadd, Ruggles & Fachnie didn't play in his position. i'll give you Reichwein & Seaman though

Fair point about Ruggles & Fachnie, I thought Sadd was a centre-back?

Fachnie though was awful, he wouldn't have made it at Cavvy, Tech or Roslyn at the time and possibly elsewhere. He remineded me of the American Cam Richardson (Ithink that was his name) that came out with Phelo, again he would have been a squad player at the best SPL clubs - nice lad though.

If Mather was too slow, so was Knox,  remember people being stunned at how poor he was. To be fair though once he started to get fit he showed he was decent.

the only times i saw Mather play, he was playing centre mid, didn't realise he played at the back also, yeah Sadd, fairly average player & Fachnie was just a stupid winger

Fachnie was good and Knox was miles better even when he wasnt fit

To be fair he might  have been good against Gi and Braes

Even though Tech are re building this year they will still be top 3. Past seasons they have battled right through and either won the league or come close. Braes on the other hand have been bottom of the sack 3 years running...Tech easy winners.

the loss of Burgess will prove to be fatal, hard to replace, not many strikers out there for starters

Not true.

They actually did the double on GI in 2011, finished above GI, on 13 points with Spirit.

I wasn't being completely serious. Tech will destroy Braes, who have  also lost a ton of players over the last few years.

Not long now boys. 1 week tomorrow and the whole of Dunedin will see the strength and passion of us Onions! All i'm hearing around the town is that GI have no reason to be confident about this season....well come next saturday night when we are celebrating our 6-0 win over Northern you'll all have to eat your words and shout me a drink for being right!

Nice pants what are you on. Tech 3rds only kick late in the season but only when it's too late. There strikers do nothing and there bench is full of unfit lazy players.

Tech will be better than ever this season! Roslyn are sounding strong to. They should re name this site to GI Fever cause thats all it is on here. GI this GI that, cant wait to watch them against northern next week in the glass house. See what there really playing with. Also saw Geordie Mansford out in monkey last night, fell off the stairs into the crowd...Id say out for a few weeks with bruised hip.

No doubt Geordie was coming in hot! Can't understand young Yeezman leaving the Plains for Roslyn, it looked for all money that he secured his favoured left back role after years of toil....Mosgiel in turmoil with Morgy missing games here and there due to his apprentiship requirements, May even miss the opener against Roslyn.

Geordie's a Roslyn lad now - was he drunk when he fell?  Getting in some practice perhaps.  Anyway he's a great signing for us (Oh by the way did I say a while back we had Nesta coming?), and hopeful Curtis will find himself a new lease of life at the club as well.  Welcome lads - I think this will be our year!
