It was great to see the local suport for the EELs  at DF Park - Not the best result for them.

That can't be right, semis are one-off games only this season - unless OFC has changed their minds very, very recently.

Permalink Permalink

Yeah that isn't correct, its just the one off games now for the semi and final.

I do remember seeing in the program the one off semi but google the above - But as you say it souds wrong

Quote OFC press release:

"Looking further into the competition the draw has also determined that the winner of the quarter final between Hienghene Sport and Ba FC will host the first semi-final against the winner of the contest between Team Wellington and Henderson Eels.

Meanhile, the second semi-final will be staged either in Tahiti or New Caledonia with the winner of the match between AS Central Sport and AS Magenta hosting the winner of the Auckland City versus Lae City FC clash.

The final will also be a one off contest hosted by the winner of the second semi-final in the middle of May."

When the tournament was first launched, it was to have two-legged quarterfinals and two-legged semis but a one-off final, and at some stage that changed to being one-off matches the whole way through.

It's chopped and changed pretty much every season. Last season it was one-off quarters, and two legged semis and final.

A cynic would say it's just OFC trying to find the perfect combo to derail the NZ teams.

Are the players for Wellington and Auckland training with them full time? Or turning out for any domestic league squads in between these games

I believe both squads have only played IspHanda and OFC qualifiers since the beginning of their season (excluding some late transfers in to squads who played only squad games from transfer date)

Team Wellington Head Coach, José Figueira, has announced that he will not be returning to the club for the upcoming season.

** José Figueira will be still based in Wellington as he and his family look forward to welcoming their second child. José will continue to focus on his New Zealand Football roles, including the New Zealand U-17s as they prepare for the FIFA U-17 World Cup later this year.
