With Barlow now out, Waikato could put out an all Auckland side.

Can we stop mentioning Declan Edge in Waikato posts, the guy is a muppet. Yes he coaches little kids and does with with them. Thats his level.

Did Waikato play a friendly over long weekend?

I heard they beat the NZ U20 team midweek.

I'm sure we have a better LB than Barlow somewhere, but sad news. And I liked Zoghby, thought he played well. Modelling must go above his football career

Matt Gibbons left back for me. Young but quality. And from the waikato region.

Gibbons could be out of luck. Apparently Waikato have signed Craig Wylie to replace Alex Barlow.

Well done East Coast Bays in picking up their first win in summer league.

Seaman was the worst player on the park

East Coast Bays loose, not often you see that. Wellington must be a good side this season.

Tight bunch are they?

Apparently I'm apathetic, but I couldn't care less.

Ive just watched the highlights of the game on the weekend on the Wellington thread.

Willie Gerdson signed Nathen Strom to add experience and stability to the backline. One would imagine he is regretting this decision. Strom against Auckland City gave away two silly free kicks that lead to two goals and loss of points for the home side. Again on the weekend Waikato seemed to be controlling the game and then Strom for no reason at all brings down a player in the box and Wellington score the resulting penalty, allowing them back into the game and take all the points.

Waikato need to get serious if they want to be a play off chance.

Granted, Strom has been at fault for a couple of goals this season. But,

you say you watched the highlights? In no way should that penalty have been given. He didnt touch him, no one around even appealed.
Every player said that on the pitch at the time, and the referee admitted he made a mistake, after the game.

It looks like he has slipped over and then appealed for the penalty as a 'try your luck' thing

Strom, Milos, Peat and Tewi all likely to be out for today. Might see Manko up front. I'm picking a low-scoring, tight match

For the record I'm a TW fan and it didn't look like a pen from where I was and hard to see anything wrong on the highlights vid.

Good to see East Coast Bays back on track. Clean sheet too. Also noticed that Strom wasnt playing, could explain the result then.

Good win but sorry to say, we were actually 2nd best for spells of the game even against 10 then 9..
Lucky not to concede at least 2, when Hayne waltzed past the dodgy left back and hit the inside of the far post, only to see the ball roll across the front of the goal and then when we tried a ridiculous free kick to the keeper who took an eternity to clear and was closed down right in front of the goal, again Manawatu were unlucky to see the ball sit on the line before being cleared..
This league however, does look wide open this year, with Auckland looking a shadow of their former selves, Wellington ok as usual, Canterbury ok, HBU average at best, Manawatu and Otago weak. Only really Waitakere any good.
If Waikato dont make play offs this year I will be disappointed!

I reckon Waikato's number 7 (Hicks?) is quality.

Manawatu need a striker huh? There best opportunities came from White in midfield. The game did change once they (I'm saying they but I am a TW supporter)went down to 10. I don't think they thought they could win

A definite top 4 chance this season, all teams from 2-7 are very close, just Waitakere and Manawatu who are miles apart

Couldn't be at the game today, what the **** happened to Waikato - lost 5-2 to Manawatu, who had 10 men for most of the 2nd half...

Explanations from anyone at the game please?

Explanations:
1) Matt Borren (YH keeper)
2) Waikato never turned up (and still scored twice!!)
3) YH played like a team for 90 mins
4) At last some luck for YH in front of goal (in defence and attack)

A very entertaining match with some quality finishing from both sides.

And Alex Carr was dreadful. How the hell did that happen. So much for our playoff chances!

Waikato will not make the playoffs. If you cant beat an awful and i mean awful Manawatu side you dont deserve make it. Should start playing Waikato based players and see where you get for once.

Waikato are the best of a bad bunch that will never make it. Its sad because they possibly could have potential if they had money to buy players and be competitive but thats likely now to never happen. So in the leagues current structure, i believe they should just play their locals and see what they can get out of it. They arent getting anyway with Gerdsons East Coast Bays team anyway. Ive heard from every Waikato coach in the last 5 seasons in after match speaches that the club is re-building what a load of bollix.

So how is buying players going to improve football in Waikato? Its not locals that are playing but imports or out of towners, exactly what he have now, out of towners. At least the out of towners are doing it cause they want to unlike the usual mercenaries for hire.

Besides, in the Premiership, its not a league where you could argue players should be paid. You complain about the standard and fairly so, but paying mediocre players to deliver more of the same is not the answer. I don't have one but the league structure wont be changing soon and paying players to play in it wont help.

I believe they will still make it. The players they have playing for them are a lot better then what the Waikato area can produce.

Really?

That's a pretty big call Pete. Just who is Bays Marco Rojas?  how about Chris Wood?  How about Caleb Rufer?

Just three that came out of Wanderers alone a couple of years back.

What I am saying is the players at the moment they have playing for them are better then what the Waikato area can produce at the moment.

I am not saying that they dont ever produce some quality.
