Yeah that's one unfortunate thing, while Waitakere will probably fall back to the pack a little bit, it also means that top-quality players who would normally not likely get game time with them (Hicks, Windust, Hobson-McVeigh etc) go into their mix, rather than having to come here.

Oh well, I guess it gives more opportunities to the local folk to show whether they're up to the task or not.

Waitakere have approached a few players fom Birkenhead .jasper.margetts.morgan that's all I think...I would imaging hicks will go there he's a talent.....

Yeah good scoop, at the time I reached out to him on Twitter and he said isn't wasn't done yet (other clubs were sniffing around), Smith said the same thing, but about three days later they got their man.

Peter Smith should go and look at how st peters cambridge have been playing, those young lads know how to play football and also have 6 out of 11 starters in NZ teams.

Im just saying the youth set up is looking promising with some of those young boys pushing for first team spots

Out of interest what's Peter smith like as coach? Is he one of the better coaches in the region?

Permalink Permalink

That's the big question, and a lack of BOP football fans on these forums makes it tough to answer.

His scouting and player signings have been very strong so far, but the more important part - getting the team to gel on the field - is yet to be determined. It's something I might interview him about in the coming weeks.

even the best coaches struggle with poor players, so he's doing the most important thing well (recruiting)

Just to let you Waibop guys know, the WAIBOP numberplate is available at the basic price (and no, I don't have a vested interest in the sale) -

see http://www.plates.co.nz/search/legend=WAIBOP

N Bomb what is happening with your John Irving guy? Signed anywhere yet? Ready to eat my words...

Permalink Permalink

No sir.

Hawke's Bay, Canty, Auckland and WaiBOP all are trying to get his signature, it's basically down to Auckland and WaiBOP. I would love to have him onboard for WaiBOP but I would totally understand him taking Auckland's offer - it'd be more money, a bigger profile and a chance to play at the Club World Cup.

Either way I'll be wishing him well, top bloke and great player - confident that he would still be one of the best players in the ASBP.

Permalink Permalink

Shit thats quite a few chasing him then. ACFC might be his best bet but would be good to see a competitive WaiBOP side...

I really do wonder who the NZU20 side is going to have...

Permalink Permalink

Have heard a few names been thrown about but they'll most likely be the easy-beats for the first season until they gel and reach a competitive age

As I predicted somewhere (I did, I tell ya! ;-)), George Slefandorfas signs for WaiBOP United. We all know what he could do at Canterbury so it is quite a handy signing, he's a great target man and distributor, the only problem is that he's very ill-disclipned. He'll be great for the likely eight games he plays this season nonetheless.

Permalink Permalink

Big risk on this guy. From what I understand last year he use to turn up when he wanted to trainings at Waitakere and act like a big timer. If he did that at the NZ champions what will he be like at WaiBop!? (No disrespect to WaiBop, I just hope you've got some coaches that can make him pull his head in!)

Permalink Permalink

This has disaster all over it. I hope not for all the good work Y-bopamooloo are doing but it's obvious his attitude has worn thin at stronger teams and he is not wanted.

An argument that can be made is that A) Maybe WaiBOP was his only option, a bit of a harsh reality perhaps, and a better one - B) There is enough striking depth that if he does come in with a horrible attitude, they can just jettison him.

Permalink Permalink

Slefendorfas is quite an enigma imo. Banged in goals for fun for Canty then seemed to fall right away. Maybe Marshall was too mouthy with him? He'll be a good test of Peter Smith's coaching/managerial talent. If he starts scoring again Waibob could do well. And if that should happen, P Smith might start thinking about grander horizons.

To be fair Jerzy, Russell Kamo scores goals for Canty so its not exactly a great argument.

I think you've got it in there somewhere N-Bomb. I guess its a case of he has no other options so Waikato are it but like you say, if he turns up acting like a cock, see ya later pal!

If they could get him back, Sam Margetts would be a good option.

Sam Margetts isn't exactly fondly remembered by the coaches/hardcore down here, he wasn't exactly commited to the cause last year. Fine player but not someone who would be missed if he went somewhere else.

Permalink Permalink

I knew he had a chip but didn't think he was like that down there.

Vader...hello.  You sound reasonable these days.  Good.  Steve Cain once told me about John Aldridge.  The thing is this - goal scorers are worth their weight.  If they have a bad attitude, or bite people, or are lazy...meh.  They score goals.  The thing with John Aldridge is he knew where the net was.  He used to count (1) here comes the ball, (2) I'm gonna set myself, (3) I'm hitting it in the net.  1,2,3 - so simple.  Aldridge had weaknesses as we all do - including the new improved Vader. Margetts, Kamo, and big George have their weaknesses too.  But they score goals.  I say let's sit back and enjoy watching them in the ASB Prem 2013/2014. PS yeah Milos and Rory also.

It's funny you put George in the category of John Aldridge, Big difference here is John consistently scored goals, George doesn't. when he first came to Canterbury he scored a number of goals and then went off the radar somewhat. I see he has scored 14 goals this year in the NL 1st div, big deal. would rather see Jack McNabb get more game time if we want someone who scores regularly year in year out.

WaiBOP reveal their new kit, and it's black and yellow.

1. We're not Wellington

2. We look like a Wiz Khalifa song

3. The players are going to LOOOOVE running around in a black kit during the middle of a summer's afternoon.

That is all.

Wow. Terrible. A nice Orange/Blue would've worked no? Nevermind the Sydney FC bit

I was thinking classic red and yellow, but if they really felt a need to include BOP then maybe chuck in some blue somewhere. Obviously it could easily become a fashion crime, but at least something more relevant to the region, rather than a $30 kit you buy from Lotto which looks the TW's.

The new kit is terrible. It's 4 years old and possibly the cheapest kit

it's not the cheapest kit by a long way - standard pricing for that style (FIO) is $51 per shirt.
That said you would think they would try for something a little more interesting but at the end of the day if they play well who cares what shirts they do it in.

New strip is very basic. I hope they didn't pay a consultant for designing that !

It's Team Wellington strip from a couple of years old. Also gone back to Lotto design where last year was Nike

Why would you play in black during summer . Big launch for nothing
