i'm thinking that the best resourced clubs end up near the top in a promotion/relegation national league - i.e. the clubs with a combination of finances, good admin, good structures, good playing numbers, good coaching, good facilities. the biggest factor often being $$$.

the franchises are just there, for better or for worse, regardless of how well they are run or resourced compared to the nations stronger clubs

youngheart, otago and waikato wouldn't have survived in a promotion/relegation club league.  they would have been usurped by a bigger stronger, better resourced and better financed club and the standard of the league would be the better for it

i related this to waitak because it appears that players won't play unless they are well paid.  if this happened in a club league, the standard wouldn't suffer because those players would resurface elsewhere in the league ,waitak would inevitably be relegated, and the league would evolve

(for better or for worse)

franchise leagues need to be constantly moving forward to be sustainable.  the lack of sponsorship or tv money has meant that the awesomeness of the nzfc in it's early days has now been eroded away to the point where we are left with one outstanding team, 2 contenders who could nick a win off them and a bunch of development sides making up the numbers.

You assume too much.  The franchises have just been doing what they've been doing under the current rules. YHM got a big shock when they were booted - the rules changed on them without them being advised!  It was a total ninja move by NZF!  So you can't say Waitako or Otago wouldn't have survived Reg.  If the rules were 'you are gonna get relegated' who's to say they wouldn't have got their act together?  On the contrary Otago (who have shown true their true Scots roots and have chosen not to bankrupt themselves just to do well in the current comp at the expense of developing local players) may have just worked a lot harder to find more money to improve themselves - at least this is my opinion.  Because there is money down there when it matters and it's big money. And the Waikato boys may have fought like hell to survive also.  You can't make those big statements Reg, because you just don't know.

my whole post was just a theory

personally, i'm not sure how i feel about it.  i think i prefer franchises actually.

one thing you can't deny is that waikato, otago and youngheart frequently performed poorly.  my point was that you cannot get away with this in a promotion / relegation structure. so you've actually backed up my point by saying that they may have got their act together had relagation rules been in place.  by not having relegation, they have meandered along.

agree, it was a ninja move by nzf. very unfair on youngheart

That is embarrassing for them. If Rex was still involved, this would not be happening. Give us a wave Bill McGowan and his coaching muppets. Anyone still wanna argue that coaching school girls is a perfectly good lead in for coaching an ASBP side?

Think you are being a bit unkind to Bill. He has been an excellent coach in the past and was with Waitakere more than 20 years ago and they were very successful  then.
Ricki was successful with the Phoenix 3 years ago and had them within one game of the final. Why is he coaching like ass now? John Adshead took us to Spain but was shyte in his 1st season of the Knights 23 years later. If you think those points have no merit, put them along side yours... Bill is also the franchise general manager, not coaching them.

I know Bill is not coaching. John Adshead took us to Spain cause he had Fallon coaching the team. Don't believe me, ask Sam or Turner. As for the Knights, he recruited piss poor players. I had a look at the players he signed before the season and it was obvious that they were not up to the standard of the Australian sides, and I predicted before the first game that they would not be competitive.

If you are old and wise you were probably young and stupid

I'm not getting into an argument about what Adshead has or has not done. The point is, I'm debating what they do now, not in the past or their glory years and Bill is the same. He gets judged on what he is doing now and from the outside looking in, driving the franchise into the ground. It may be the right move for say in 5 years time, but come out and say that.

No I just read something on here that he was coming and was a little surprised as I thought he had been at Portsmouth and the English FA as well as somewhere in Australia too? Plus the fact I thought he was disliked by most during his time in NZF?

But losing to Club sides, scratch sides and the u17's does not bode well for the coming season...?

I'm a Waitak fan living in Brisbane and I must say the clubs marketing is pretty bad compared to a club like City. Waitak's website looks cheap and nothing is kept up to date which doesn't help anyone.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Cardozo Perhaps this one?

Its going to be a hard season I think for the team considering the players they have lost. Krishna will not be easy to replace and I don't know who they have brought in to try and replace him.

Jarrod Young, interesting. Still 19 I believe, very good player for Wanderers but not in the WaiBOP team - not sure whether they didn't want him, or whether he had already signed. Definitely wouldn't have made last year's Waitak squad so that says a lot about their new finances.

I don't understand how Waitak's money situation is less than some other teams considering how successful they have been (excluding the FIFA CWC). I would have thought a number of good players would want to stay or go to Waitak unless they can't play the wages that are being demanded.

I understand it's the combination of money and coaches. Waitakere have none of the former and onto their newest lot of coaches that the players do not respect.

I don't know what to expect from this squad and don't think they'll trouble City too much this weekend. I have seen highlights of Lowden play here in Brisbane as his club is 20mins away from me.

The first goal in this video is his from last season, http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qcuTo-xGMhs. Should be a handy player.
